Can't make up my mind on what to buy with X-Mas money

Do yourself a favor now and just buy one good folder with a generally usefull blade shape like a Benchmade 710 ect.
Later on you will be able to afford more knives and specialized designs and will have a better idea of what you like.

You will find as this hobby grows on you that you will start to yearn for the better or possibly best folders and will be glad you bought a great one to start off with instead of a handfull of OK ones.

Besides, a good folder will last for years, you have time.

Right from the start I would recommend you get a good flashlight like a Surefire E2e.

A great knife and great light will be two of your greatest companions and their uses are limitless!

Anybody know of the BM 550 in D2? Just like Cabela's has the 551 in D2. Thanks guys, you've all given me some great suggestions. Also hear's a list of the knives I have that maybe some of you guys could see an area I'm lacking or somewhere to make an improvement. Leatherman Sideclip, SOG Flash I PS, Spyderco Endura PS, Spyderco ladybug(on keychain), Benchmade 824, Benchmade 550OD, CRKT Ryan Plan B, Victorinox Bantam, CRKT Liner lock PS(unsure of name but similar to mountain series). Thanks again, Mike.

After looking at your list I think a few fixed blades would be in order for a better folder to fixed-blade ratio. Lots of great knives with 4-5" blades available these days. I don't think anyone on the forum could go without at least three fixed-blades in thier stash.

Also, it's always good to have another multi-tool to keep in the rotation. Gives you an opportunity to try another Leatherman or one of the many offered by other makers. Keeps the wear and tear down as well.

You could always try the "one from every maker" route to build up your collection. It's always nice to have experience with products from various makers for knowledge and to gain a better perspective of what is available to suit your personal tastes and needs.

Lastly, a bali and an auto, even if just for entertainment purposes. Always nice to have some "Ooh, ahh! COOL!" factor in there,

Dayuhan

I would go balisong, but that's just me :p .

The Random Leek is a knife that I'm taking a real close look at right now (non-balisong anyway). Unfortunately they no longer have the introductory price, but at $100 it still looks like a good deal. SpeedSafe with TiNi coated S30V blade. The Benchmade ambush does look pretty good, but I've never handled it. The regular Leek is also a good knife and that would allow you to get a nice light to go with it.

Thanks wire eddge, dayuhan13, and ZENGHOST, all great suggestions just too many choices. I'm almost positive that I cannot buy an auto and pretty sure that bali's are illegel in NJ just like slingshots, fireworks, and having fun (so it seems anyway). I didn't mention that I have a few fixed blades, nothing expensive, cheap gifts. 2 of which are generic survival knives, one I made into a thrower/random branch cutter, the other had it's tip broken off on accident so I filed it into a tanto point and I also have a decent size bowie but lacks in quality. I really do like the 5 inch bladed Becker but I really don't find myself in any situations where I would put it to good use or any fixed blade for that matter, I know I will purchase it in the future just not at the moment. Right now I'm looking on just expanding to having more(quantity) useful things instead of just one or maybe even 2 better quality items. I have one of those "standard size" Maglights and a Coast 3 blue LED light. What I'm thinking of doing is buying the Spyderco DALLARA rescue, Maxpedition Thermite versipack in OD, CMG Infinity ultra, and spy capsule. I figure those items would be very useful for ever and are great for the money. That should run me about $130 shipped give or take a few which is what I have right now. However, I think tonight I'm taking the gf out for dinner, so we'll see how that breaks the bank. What do you guys think of that choice? Thanks a lot again, and I'm sorry if it seems like I'm shooting down any of your ideas or suggestions, I just want to make sure I get a lot for my money and what I really want and can use. -mike

Just lookin around Cabela's website and saw the 551 D2 again. I can get the 551 in D2 with the OD handle that I love on my 550 plus the better steel for only $70. What do you guys think of that? Would that make an awesome EDC?

For certain reasons I'm looking more into a light BOB based around the Max Versipack. Any recommendations as to what items I should look into. CMG Infinity ultra and spycapsule are already gonna be part of it.

Don Rearic has a lot of really good ideas utilizing a TADgear container and some muzzleloader tubes here that I found very informative.

How practical is a bali for EDC? I still haven't decided yet. I'm also interested in the TAD stealth jacket. How are you guys carrying your BM 42 or other 40 series bali? After seeing Lara Croft 2 today and watching her flip her bali, there's definitely a fun factor in them, but how are they for SD, ED cutting, and other jobs?

Any last suggestions? I'm getting really antsy and want to order this weekend cause I gotta get my fix on a new knife.

Absolutely, it's a wonderful knife. My only thought would be, if you already own a 550, the 551 - even in D2 - is not offering you a lot that you don't aleady have. But that's the only downside I can think of - the 551 is an incredible knife for the money, it's my EDC when I'm going places I worry I might lose my 940CFD2 or 730CFS30V. And the Cabelas Limited Edition is a steal. The way BM prices their add-on options, if they offered a 551D2BT direct MSRP would be $120+ - so the Cabela's knives are priced at what amounts to damn near wholesale.

But if you want a do-it-all folder, you already have a 550, and your budget is $110 (right?) you might want to say what is the BEST folder I can get for $110, rather than what GOOD folder can I get inside that budget? And to answer that, at internet prices, you's want to be looking at knives like a BM 710HS, 806D2, 735, or Spyderco Military or Chinook. Or a BM balisong, but you may have legal troubles there.

Having said that, you can't go wrong with the Cabela's D2 Benchmade 551 & 556.

Does a balisong fall under "gravity knife"? Here's the NJ laws based around that term. "New Jersey - Code of Criminal Justice - 2C:39-3 e. Certain
weapons. Any person who knowingly has in his possession
any gravity knife, switchblade knife, dagger, dirk,
stiletto... or razor blades embedded in wood, ballistic
knife, without any explainable lawful purpose, is guilty
of a crime of the fourth degree.
- 2C:39-1 h. "Gravity knife" means any knife which has a
blade which is released from the handle or sheath thereof
by the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal
force... p. "Switchblade knife" means any knife or similar
device which has blade which opens automatically by hand
pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in
the handle of the knife... u. "Ballistic knife" means any
weapon or other device capable of lethal use and which can
propel a knife blade."
Also, does anyone have experience with ulout.com, they are currently offering the BM 530 for $53. Wow, after looking at they're other BM offerings I've seen the 732, 720, 722, 940, and 690(CF... yum). Decisions decisions. I'm gonna need another day now.

I just ordered the BM 806SD2, New Graham was out of plain edge and 1sks couldn't beat New Graham's price of $106 or Cheaper than dirt's price of $103, so I went with newgraham.com cause they gave me great service with my 550OD. I was looking at the B/S's but for my B-day in June I'm hoping for a ER so no need for the B/S. New Graham is great, and I loved hearing that girl's southern accent on the phone but Mike was busy so I went through their site. I'm looking foward to the knife and the bandaids cause last time I really needed them, New Graham's service is second to none. Thanks guys!
Edited it to say: Sorry if you can't make sense of this post, I was trying to multi-task talkin to the 'Rents, man are they a pain in the... but yea, I finally ordered a knife. and New Graham makes me :)

Hey Mike, would you be able to email me the tracking number? I've been having problems(again) sending emails but no problem recieving them. Email address is miwillia@kean.edu. Thanks for the great service.

I'm at home now...will email myself (techno-redneck) at the store and check on it Thur AM...if you chose UPS, they are suppose to send the tracking number...but the system does not always work.
Thanks again for your support.
Regards, Mike
