Can't think of a clever SNARK thread title, Snark thread.

If you do, you may want to joint the either the Williamson County Area Beekeepers Association (meets in Georgetown 4th Thursday Jan - Oct, 3rd Thurs Nov, no meeting Dec). We have a few from the Temple/Belton/Killeen area that come. There's also the Heart of Texas Beekeepers Association, located in Waco, meeting 4th Tues Jan-Nov).

I don't know much about the HOTBA, as I go to the G-town one (closer for me). We have a novice training program and "group buys" on equipment and bees. HOTBA may also have these. Most bee packages are delivered around April here in Texas, so we have the "Getting Ready" training in Jan - Mar.

Thanks for the info zz. The guy doing the demo was recommending a Top Bar Hive. Conveniently enough, his son also makes and sells them for $250 each. I'm thinking I need to check out one of the meetings in January...

I raise my glass tonight to all of the fine makers and providers of beautiful pointy and slicey objects. Keep em' sharp!

And I raise a glass to all of you fine folks who support rascals like us in our endeavors. We dang sure couldn't do it without your support! :)

Heads up to any of the heads that are going to shot, I was watching a video from a certain, unpopular, becker head an he mentioned he going to try and sweet talk Ethan into giving him a kukri. Might want to keep your eyes on him

well, if he gets Ethan a high class "date", he might have a chance, but at that point, it'll be a production unit, and it might be cheaper to buy one.

getting one earlier? i can imagine Ethan chuckling sadly. "get in line" :D it's a long one.

as for me, i'll have a few as soon as i can get them.

should be sweet.

they look to be well balanced for North American woods use - which is for me, mostly hardwoods, some soft.

As with everything, there are Pros and Cons to TBHs. And you can build one for WAY WAY less than $250. Might not look as purty, but they were developed as a type of hive to be shown to developing country people as a way to boost their income on the cheap, using locally available tools and supplies.

Langstroth hives (the typically seen hive here in the US) are more expensive to make and require tighter tolerances and are the preferred hive of commercial operators (multiple reasons). We need to chat on bees later, maybe over a soda somewhere.

Why are bottle openers always so thin? Then I have to pop it like 3 times to get the lid open. Where if it was slightly larger it would be a one and done!

Your doing it wrong. My birudashi is a one and done every time. So is my gorilla opener, so is my titanium skull opener.

Now my new AK47 opener from a buddy on another forum honestly did take 2 tries to get the top off the first time. But its also the cheapest opener that i have payed for. And it still got the job done.

1. My first question is, how badly/quickly do you really need to open a beer?

2. Who "needs" an opener at all, much less one shaped like a dang gorilla, designed by the current world record-holder in the 2x4 chop and the current BladeSports champion? I got news for ya kids, no one "needs" that. But it's freaking cool as a polar bear's ass :)

1. WHAT?...... WHAT?..... What do you mean how badly/quickly do we need to open a beer???? I cant believe im reading this. Everyone knows if you dont get that beer open in 0.02 seconds flat the anxiety kicks in and one might break the top of the bottle off to get to that deliciousness we all crave!

2. The beer i drink is a twist top.... But the "cool as a polar bear's ass" gets me every time :D

Oh... his 2x4 record was beat by Ted Ott, by just a fraction of a second. Now they have to figure out a more precise way of timing it because a person using a stop watch is no longer accurate enough to time speeds this quick. NOW, if they counted the time he used my knife and went throught the 2x4 in a single swing he would still hold the record... He is the only person EVER to accomplish that with any knife this size.... But unfortunetly the guy doing the timing on that one couldnt even start and stop the watch fast enough. If you pay attention to the end of the video you can hear the guy with the timer saying he couldnt even stop the time fast enough.... He was robbed on that one LOL

holy cr@p.

The thing that gets me he is he looked so calm afterwards.... Id STILL be dancing a jig if i managed anything like that LOL..... Trust me i have tried 100 times. I think my personal best was around 10 hits, i wasnt counting, but i was dancing then LMAO He makes it look easy.... Its not.

You're doing it wrong, son. Only braggarts, blaggards and fools concern themselves with drinking as fast as they can. True, professional drunkards are like marathon runners, not sprinters; and have long-since come to accept the simple fact that there will always be more. It's just a matter of time and patience. :p

I did not know that! I do not know Mr Ott personally, and sadly I've never yet had the pleasure of examining one of his knives; but I am well familiar with his name and reputation as both a maker and a cutter. Nothin' but respect.

Im no speed drinker.... After the first one i dont much mind taking a bit longer to open one up.... BUT... that first one needs to open itself up and jump in my mouth or i may start cutting people

:p

If I may ask who is this unpopular/former(?) Beckerhead? I mean I can think of a few.

Yeah... Mr. Keffeler is like that. That dude don't play.

I've watched him compete (and win) twice at the BladeSports Championships in Atlanta... he's very, very focused when he comes to the fore. It's really something to see

As WW said... that stuff ain't nearly as easy as it looks. I "competed" in a chopping contest at Ethan's place last Fall, and got my butt thoroughly kicked up around my shoulders. I didn't come in last, so that's something... and I would like to blame my poor performance on the fact that I was using a borrowed knife... but the fact is, I simply wasn't in shape for it and my technique was awful. It was a seriously humbling experience.

When (not if) you drink with me, I'ma make you wait for your first shot, just to be a jerk :D

I cant remember his forum name here, and i havent seen the video mentioned above but im betting its youtuber Preparedminds101.

He is a begger, a bum. SO i just assume spike is talking about him. He wont review things on his channel unless he gets them free or at a serious discount. I cant even watch his videos because they are bias to getting the stuff free.... and his voice, the way he talks, irritates the crap out of me.

He is a great teacher as well. Having the honor of being trained and certified by him is something ill never forget, i learned more that weekend about using knives than i have in 2 years of running around cutting stuff up in the woods and in my basement. He explains how wood compresses, how the grain of the wood can determine the ease of cutting through it, and the correct angle and side to start at.. To him its a science, not just picking a knife up and wailing at the wood... He is a smart man!! It was loads of fun and im looking forward to the next cut i can attend.

Oh and thanks for the heads up.. ill make sure to take a shot before i get there just to take the edge off :D

I need to eat something salty to hold this water in.

You are correct, it was in his latest video about the knife he designed for schrade

I envy you that experience! Mr. Keffeler has laid down some serious knowledge in ST and elsewhere; I can only imagine what it's like to pick his brain man-to-man.

Not to belabor the point, 'cuz you already know how these cats are, but Ethan Becker and Jerry Fisk and Donavon Phillips and Kevin Cashen and Karl Andersen and Jerry Hossom and sooo many others at the very top of their field are much the same... they clearly love to talk knives and teach and share and encourage guys like us. I met each of those men face-to-face the first time when I was truly a nobody (still am), and every single one of them was completely open to my questions, and kind to me as a human bean, and they all were happy to school me.

That's truly remarkable.

Well, whatever you feel gives you an edge, brother. I know yer a tough little bastard, but I'm not so sure you wanna go for quantity if you're up against the real deal. But if you're scared and that makes you feel better, go for it. I'll be happy to pour you in a cab and swear to your wife that it was all my fault. ;)

I SO look forward to meeting Ethan one day, and everyone else that i can. These guys have so much knowledge if even a little rubs off on me ill be better for it!!

My wife will know better, i dont get pressured into stuff... Normally im the one doing the peer pressuring LOL

In all seriousness i dont drink that much quantity anymore. Now when i was in the army id take a bottle of 151 and tip it upside down and laugh at the people using shot glasses. Anymore a half pint of crown and a beer or 2 will keep me good all night... Of course depending on the time and place i may mix a good smoke or 2 in there as well.
