Canvas Micarta

On the subject of name recognition I notice you don’t use your name when posting online but an anonymous handle.
I feel like you’re thinking way too much into this and I’m guessing you have a problem trusting people.
It reminds me of a buffalo/bison argument two of my buddies had at work. Are they buffalo if they’re in North America? No, they’re not. But if you asked 100 people to identify a picture of a buffalo and held up a picture of a bison, I bet 90% would call it a buffalo.
People recognize what micarta is so I call it micarta when I use it on a knife.
It’s widely accepted in the knife community.
It's a name I made up back in y2k so I like to keep using it instead of using someone else's name.
Analogies are cute but don't work on me.
I heard of a guy that used ats34 for his blades and stamped them 154cm so they would sell better. His customers never knew, way better analogy.
Some consumers only know what micarta is because makers keep perpetuating the use of the name for select a few products the company makes, that's just weak lazy marketing.
And don't start with the trolling BS I am just bringing awareness to the problem, and it is a problem, take it or leave it.

Thank you very much for the comment on the knife itself. I thought it was inapropriate to name the site I got it from so I did not. I have ordered from the site you linked, but not the micarta I have used on this knife, it was a different supplier. The material was 9mm thick so I had to grind a good bit away, I would not even know how to make decent handle scales with 3mm thick material.

You are correct this was your post, I did hijack your post and for that I do apologize. Don't sell yourself short on thinner scales it just takes practice and less, lighter sanding .
As for your original post, I have have good luck in the past using a good 15 minute epoxy to fill phenolic resin voids and defects. Mask the area, mix up a small amount of epoxy and apply. Give it a good amount of cure time and you can sand and smooth it and it will polish too. It has always worked well for me but you may want to test on unwanted pieces till you perfect your technique. Also for colored phenolic you can sand some fibers off a spare piece to use in the epoxy for filler, it doesn't always match the grain but color matches well enough for other places that aren't highly visible.

thank you very much, I will definitely try that out.

Will eternal shame and damnation toward trademark misuers apply to my generic naming of Corby or Loveless screws ?
How about Teflon, Delrin, Nylon & Kydex ? Is there no end to the madness ??

I didn’t call you a troll.
There’s a huge difference between using a commonly known word for something made in a similar manner with similar characteristics and deliberately deceiving a customer to profit.

Micarta... yes the real deal from Westinghouse.

The first two photos show knives that are finished at 24 grit on the "flats" of the scales and 600 grit on the perimeters. The Kwaiken in the third pic was ground to about 220 grit then sandblasted with garnet media. The black one in the first pic was taken to a 400 grit hand sanded finish after being brought to 600 belt finish because the black looked bad/scratchy with my 24 grit treatment. All are my knives from this week and I purchased the material myself direct.

There are several different types of Micarta with the main ones being Canvas, Linen and Paper. G10 and CF are completely different in both materials and the way they are made.

"Brand Police! If you please? "
Of course not knowing any ones age but it's like some older people get the "dreaded correctness of speech" disease.
Hahaha

I find it interesting that while you are concerned to the point of obsession with Calling only Norplex Micarta "Micarta", you fail to capitalize "Hitachi", "Crucible", or even "Norplex" (your perceived injured party). Come on man, if it's Westinghouse Micarta, makers will call it that. No one is trying to be deceptive. And I can't imagine any consumer cares if the phenolic resin on their knife is made by Norplex or not. Only if it is Westinghouse or not...MAYBE. As far as it being a "problem", that's a matter of opinion.

I had to come back to this.
They are "all" completely different in materials, not so much in the base suspension or thermosetting process though if you choose to read further on the subject. Norplex-micarta currently makes them and before norplex it was just micarta making them all, micarta was a sub brand of WH that is all. Ads are cute but don't tell the whole story, it was a marketing campaign to develop the micarta brand name only. All you need to know about the brand micarta right here. Readers can decide if it's a brand or just a few products of the brand, I believe it's just a brand and doesn't describe a select few products of the brand. I won't comment further because it's obvious some wish to defend its misuse. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micarta

I suggest you drop this subject..there are a great deal of things that are generalized and have been forever and will continue to be generalized long after you are gone.
Leave it alone

It is in my opinion not necessary to discuss this further. dirtvictim has created his own thread regarding his opinions on micarta because he did not want to change the original subject of this thread too much. The other thread he has created, was closed by Stacy after some discussion regarding micarta.

I would invite the mods to close this thread too if deemed necessary. I have had responses regarding my original questions and I don't think further discussions regarding micarta are necessary in this particular thread, since it has all been said in the other thread already.

It's OK to leave it open for your original topic,..Getting it back to the original topic was the main goal without having the derail of naming convention and tradenames brought up hoping to change..

Back to your original topic if anyone has some good information to provide- Otherwise, I'm sure that @Stacy E. Apelt - Bladesmith can close it if you wish.

Thanks for sticking the "knife" in a little deeper by replying. How will I know if something is still generalized if I am long gone? Fortunately the mods can "at will" with little discretion, censor or close threads or even do a temp ban, that's a poke don't be mad just playing.

Canvas phenolic by nature is coarser than linen phenolic. Linen will give you a much finer surface finish without the fissures you dislike.

I had the same problem over the weekend. I took it back to the grinder and just took it down a hair then re polished and it came out fine.
