Captain Feedback

Just wanted to start a thread to get some feedback on the Captain.

I have been carrying mine everyday for 8 months and I find new uses for it all the time. The Sharpmaker keeps it razor sharp and the VG-10 is awesome (my first knife in VG-10). Sal and the team at Spyderco built a superb knife! I have pounded mine through trees, used the "false edge" to strike a firesteel a lot and I have chopped, oh yeah, I'm not kidding chopped with it hard. I have scraped paint, pulled nails, opened cans, peeled fruit, jabbed holes in walls and I still cannot wait to pull it out and show it as though it is brand new. It still looks new and feels new.

The stiff lock seemed to be a sore spot for some, but after a little use it is smooth as silk (I would rather it be stiff and find it's sweet spot than be slick at first and get loose).

As far as the uses; I admit it seemed limited when I first leaned back in my chair and looked at the initial design. After packing it around (90% of the time in my watch pocket with a 6 wrap noose out of paracord attached for quick draw) for several months it truly proved to be two blades in one! I cut steak and veggies to drywall and the box as well as everything outside and inside "the box". I was impressed with the penetration I got into a phone book.

Sal is the man to make the decisions; but I would like to see an H1 version and a serrated version. Mainly, I want to see one in everyone's hand.

I have said before, I design for use and use alone. Before you judge this book by it's cover (if that is your reluctance to try one) pick one up and use it. Like a favorite cap or good pair of shoes, it will become a part of you. On the other hand or should I say in the other hand; If you have used one and it doesn't fit I understand that too. I have held some very highly acclaimed knives and thought, "why is thing so highly regarded?". I know it isn't for everyone and I'm not just full of it, but I know I am my biggest critic and I am well pleased with the wonderful job that Sal and all the great people at Spyderco have done turning my dream into reality.

Let me say now, I appreciate all criticism, the fire purifies and yet lights our way in the darkness, the water can carve away mountains and wash us clean; we have been given so much and our perception and use of it is what defines us. Please, I welcome the comments and suggestions as an opportunity to improve.

The first proto was made at Spyderco from a drawing. To this day if you lay a C111 on the "actual size" hand drawn print I sent in, it fits perfectly. The only variance is the pivot location is slightly different. I have since started using CAD for all my designs.

The Captain is almost flawless as it is. Only two things I would change, and both are purely personal prefence. I'd like to see it with a Compression lock, because I dislike liner locks, and I'd like to see it partially serrated, especially in the recurved area.

I'd make a slightly larger version...maybe 3/4" more blade and handle. Compression lock. Maybe a differnt steel but I do like that VG10.

It's truly an interesting knife. I have one, but I must admit I don't carry it. There is no question it is very well built. I like liner locks okay, but I agree with SMC that the compression lock would be a move in the right direction.

You did a great job with the design.
:)

Hairsplitter,

You indicated that you have used your Captain hard and it still looks new....I would like to see the mug-shot of your Captain....can you post the pic?
:)

I love my captain. The design is truely unique - nothing else on the market resembles it. I have not found a task thus far it is not up to. Great knife.

Jason,

The Captain is a great design. I have used mine to carve a walking stick from a large branch. It's also my go-to knife for cutting pizzas! I've used it for a steak knife, too -- very effectively.

As for size, I like smaller knives, but I would like the Captain with just a bit more length (half an inch, max). A version with serrations (on the inward curve) would be great (as long as the plain edge version is still available).

I could also see how a much bigger Captain might be useful.

The liner lock pinches my hand sometimes. I don't mind the liner lock in general, but I would like to see the current knife with a more comfortable grip. Or a different lock altogether (any design that works is fine with me, from Ball Lock to Compression Lock, lock back, etc.).

Thanks for a great knife! And thanks for signing the card that came with my knife from NGK! :)

Any lock other than the current liner lock design. Front lock would be fine, compression or ball-lock would be more fun.

I have been thinking of getting one. I have never seen the right side of one. Is the grind the same on both sides. It is not flat on the other side, is it??

I also immediately fell in love with my first C-111 Captain model. Most people are automatically either skeptical or reserved about any new design or new tool. I too like the versatility of the Captain model.

Also I have been beating the drum profusely about Spyderco making a serrated version of the Captain. It just doesn't make common sense or business sense at all when you consider that the designer Jason Breeden has stated for the record that he designed the Captain to have a serrated blade especially in the curvature part.

I think that the Captain is one of the most innovative blades I have encountered for some time. The Captain is truly getting a bum rap from quite a few of the knife community.

Grossly misunderstood. However I have said on several occasions that you will not understand a lot of Spyderco's knives until you actually use them. That's how I got to be such a Hawkbill fanatic when I found out just how useful they were. Try the Captain>> you'll be very pleasantly surprised.

I still need to get a Captain. the design is so intriguing that I just have to try one for myself. It looks like an excellent woods tool. I also think Jason and Spyderco should think of a larger, fixed blade version.

I like my Captain!
The unique blade shape is extremely versatile.....a great whittler!
only requested change would be for a compression lock...sweet design!

If it came in 3 3/4" i would deffienetly buy it. I still might have to check out the current model first.

Hey jaislandboy you just hit on something I never even considered. As many chores as I had considered the Captain to be useful for I had never even considered it as a whittling tool. But I can see with all of the contours and curvature how it would be a great knife for whittling.

I also bet that you could control it easily as well. I also bet it could be used as a carving tool as well.

Currently have it as a passaround knife. Great handy EDC blade to say the least. Only thing I would change is the lock to something else, lockback or compression and if the handle could be extended by about a half inch. One thing that would be an added bonus is if the spine of the blade could be made into a saw with a plastic cover. Just dreaming now.
