carbide platen

I mounted mine with the tape Contender machine supplied. I have used it quite a bit and can't imagine it ever coming off. I see no need for some kind of a shelf under the carbide.
Another thing, I might mention. I don't know why, but the carbide platen cuts much faster than the glass platen did. At least it does for me.

Well, I got the carbide platen mounted with the double sided tape that's on the platen. I also put a couple of #6x32 setscrews at bottom, not sure they're needed, but won't hurt anything.

I did a bit of grinding with the platen - seems good. I'll be doing more grinding over the next couple of days.

Thanks Darren - the platen was very well packed

Sounds like fun! I just bought one yesterday and it should be here tomorrow thanks to Darren choosing an expedited shipping service when he found out I was left with nothing!

I sold loads of carbides with the tape and there is like a real small fail rate.
But i think its because of people letting it get way too hot.

But always best to have the ledge / setscrews underneath it.

I've broken some carbide tools running machines because they are brittle. I don't plan to hammer on my platens once they arrive but has there been any issues?

Could someone please link me to where I can purchase a carbide platen? Thanks!

Thank you!

Ive only had a handfull that contacted me with a broken carbide. After 3-4 years of selling them.

The actual reason i cant say for sure but all said it happened without no reason.
Could be from a malfunction in the carbide from the manufacturing process and with thermal expansion.

But you have to be carefull nothing bumps against to it since it is brittle indeed.

Carbide doesn't like thermal shock at all. This is why when machining with interrupted cuts (end mills, shells mills etc.) running without coolant can generate better tool life than running with coolant. It is better to keep the tool a consistent temperature, if it's hot let it be hot.

So, I can see that if someone was doing a bunch of grinding on a carbide platen and it got hot then cooled it down quickly (maybe flood coolant or a mister was turned on) that could cause it to crack or even shatter.

Never cool carbide fast. Preferably don't let your platen get too hot to begin with.

OK, a short comment on my impressions with some use of the carbide platen. First of all, I am amazed and impressed with the mirror finish - it's like looking into a mirror it's so shiny. Exactly what I aspire to when doing a mirror polish on a blade - not that I do that very often.

Next, actually using it - one of the things that pushed me over the edge on ordering one was the promise of no static..... so far even with the dry weather we're having the last couple of days there has been no static charge. Nice not to get a tingle when touching the grinder. At times in the past I've use a ground wire to bleed off the static charge, and also used fabric softener on back side of belt which does help.

So far, I'm happy with my purchase. Thanks Darren - are you importing them from the guy in Germany I think it is?

I'm glad you are enjoying it! Yes, I am getting these directly from RD_knives RD_knives . He is in the Netherlands. He takes the credit for producing these and making them available, I am just acting as a middle man here in the US.
