Carbiners-I am not convinced. Why carry them?

Isn't a pack for putting things inside not for hanging a bunch of bling on the outside?

Wrong. It's for using any which way you want. My pack (and my carabiner or whatever else), my application.

BTW, right on TL and Esav. It seems that a lot of people suffer from self esteem problems if the only way they can boost their ego is by being critical of others.

I also agree that having carabiners hanging off your pack marks you as the true tool.

Doc (another tool, apparently :( )

This used to be the place where you could come and have a meaningful exchange and do so without the retarded trappings of the trolls.

I carry a pair of 'beaners in my pack along with two 6' lengths of static cord for making a harness and climbing sling to shimmy up trees for whatever reason. (hanging bear bags, buck poles, tarp beams, etc.) Or for when I forget my climbing harness while hunting. I've used the ranger harness for dragging deer or long logs as well.

As far as hanging gear, 'beaners are pretty bulky so I go with the little poser-beaners/gear clips. clip lanyards to my belt/pack/harness so things that fall out of sheaths don't get lost, hang compass, flashlight, knife where easily accessable.

Yeah, they're not necessary, but if you think about it, neither is a tent, stove, cookware, bag, boots, etc...
