carbon fiber manix 2

I have a CF and a G10, neither have any issues. And its not the spring being super stiff, its friction on the cage. If you take the scales and liners off and play with the spring, its not that tough. Use the knife and it will smooth out.

I have two CF Manix 2's and mine are rock solid, dead centered blades and the F&F is spot on. There is nothing wrong at all with mine except the stiff lock springs - I suspect the stiff, two handed ball lock disengagement has a lot to do with preemptive mitigation of over-zealous governmental interpretations . . .

LMAO, nice one!:p

Hope yours smoothes out like mine did, just keep using it.

I have one and it is literally perfect.

I have thought about snipping a coil on the spring...but won't.

I have two, with no issues on either; centered blades when closed (not that I give a rip), no discernable play either vertical or horizontal when locked open. As far as play when closed, again I don't give a rip. They may rattle for all I know or care. I don't find the locks particularly stiff, but these are the first ball-lock knives I've handled with a strong enough closed detent and enough closing bias to make me comfortable with tip-up carry.

I wonder what a reputable custom maker would charge to duplicate one with no flaws? I'd guess $500 or more. Assuming that you can find one that could do the job, of course.

Mine goes to work with me each day. The lock smoothed right up with a bit of use.

To the OP: call around, and good luck. The good news is that there are plenty of people who bought multiples strictly for the purpose of resale. The bad news is that (you guessed it) there are plenty of people who bought multiples strictly for the purpose of resale at significantly higher prices. Such is the dark side of a free market economy I suppose.

I have a few of them (BTW, none for sale), all identically flawless, almost boring for any QC guy ;)
Probably the best fit and finish I have seen on any production folder, barring maybe the Umnumzaan.
My only complaint: the index choil has a bit of a sharp edge towards the blade side.
And, of course, I would have preferred a Comp Lock, but then the blade to handle ratio would not have been the same...

The old Manixes have a lot of side to side play when closed

That is very interesting!!! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
Maybe that is why some people said it gets better with use.

Do you have a suggestion for reducing friction on the cage?
Polish it? Buff it? Oil it?
Maybe polish the surrounding parts.

I am actually in the process of making Ti liners for my manix II and will try to polish the cage along with the G10 and Ti to see if I can get it better. Just using it has helped, but I wouldn't add oil, don't want to make the cage slippery and impossible to disengage the lock.

I tried replacing the spring with a softer one.
Oh what an adventure. I never took a folder apart before, never needed to.
Its easy and simple, but naturally I dropped the ball bearing!
&$%#$%$.
I cleaned the whole room looking for it, darn thing must have a cloaking device.

It is a 4 milimeter ball bearing, I had to buy a pack of 100.

I got it all back together with no extra parts (good sign)
The lock is much easier to use and still locks up like a vault.
But now the blade retention is weaker. Too weak for tip up carry with that big slab of S90V waiting for my fingers.
Ah-ha! So that is why they chose a stiff spring.

I'll put the original spring back it (and I found the original bearing, I swear it has an invisibility shield).

I played with the lock without the spring and it IS "sticky" and "grabby" if you pull off-center a little.
So next I'll try polishing the plastic and the parts around it. Any suggestions on how to polish?

Hmmm, I wrote too fast.

I like it much better with the softer spring.
The blade retention is still slightly stronger than an axis.

The plastic is still a little grabby (probably catching the CF), but slides smoother.

Now I want to get the blade centered and get rid of the 3 milimeter side to side play.

For the plastic, try plastic polish that you see for polishing plexiglass and eyeglasses. I use NOVUS brand for such things.

While the knife was apart, did you measure for washer size?

No, I don't have a micrometer.
I figured I'd add thin washers until the play is gone.
They are gonna look at me funny at the local hardware store when I demand
Phosphor Bronze washers!

Might try a hobby shop that specializes in scale model railroading or radio control models, especially cars, if there are any in your area.

I used to lose C clips all the time. Running a large magnet around the floor is a fast way to find small metal parts. I use a 20 oz magnet off an old Jensen 6x9 car speaker.

Great Idea,
Thank you.

I would not have thought of RC Cars, that makes it easy.

Had mine over 2 weeks now, I did notice the lock was stiff but after using it for 2 days it set in quite nicely. I work at a cutlery store and I opened and broke down 8 large boxes the second day I had it and wow! very nice. I can say that it will not be my primary edc because it is way to hard to stay away from my caly 3 zdp! but the MAnitx will be the main knife featured in my bug out bag. reason being it is a bit on the large side for edc and the textured grip will eat my pants as would g-10 or aircraft alum.
Everybody complaining about price, I guess nobody remembers what a particular s90v textured carbon fiber military sprint ran a couple of years ago? This knife adds the bearing lock and is almost half the price. some need to stop shopping at walmart

I know this is a bit off topic, but I don't want to start a new thread.

Is the 154CM Manix 2 going to be a normal production knife or is it also limited?

(( rules violations ))

It has a light "click" when you open the blade the first 5 degrees that I don't like. Maybe some people would call it extra strong edge retention. Certainly the other one doesn't have it.

Personaly I am disappointed in the Manix 2 CF. You might want to wait for the next variation. The fit and finish on both of mine is sloppy compared to say... my benchmade griptilion

-the blades are both well off center
-there was oil dripping off one of the blades
-there is visible side to side play on both and tightening doesn't take it out
-the blade grind is sloppy, one has a burr that is easily visible the naked eye
-the carbon fiber has much sharper edges than the the Stretch II, sure looks like its gonna hurt my hand for harder jobs.

These are all minor points, but if they can't get the small stuff right how can I trust for the big stuff. And if my $60 griptilion can get it right shouldn't a $200 sprint run knife get the details right.

Nevermind, the real problem is the lock release is just to darn stiff.
Other posters have mentioned it with gentle phrasing.
I find it very unpleasant, bordering on dangerous for one handed use
(put away the flame throwers, just my opinion, I know some people love it)
It is maybe 3 or 4 times stiffer than an axis lock.
If I had bought only one I would have assumed it was defective and sent it to Spyderco immediately, but mine both have very stiff springs.
If I had handled it first for one minute I never would have bought.
Its just too unpleasant for Every Day Carry.

On a positive note, I like the S90V and it comes sharp. I love the polished pocket clip, much better than painted steel. The carbon fiber texture is great, even more grippy than the Stretch II. Both lock up tight as a vault vertically!
could someone, a mod or mods, explain this violation to me. i'm unable to find the rules violated?
i'd liked to know so i won't make the same mistake.
all good

My guess is that Esav edited out whatever the rules violations were, so there is none in the text you are quoting. Not saying this is what happened, but he may have offered the knife for sale or trade.
