Carbon fiber spydies

I have a Sage 1, Gayle Bradley, and an cf m390 Military. I looks of the cf best on the GB and Sage. But I like the feel of the peel ply cf on the Military. They are all three awesome knives. But, if I had to chose a cf blade material it would be the stuff on the GB and Sage. I really like the looks of that cf. And it is plenty grippy. To me the peel ply of the millie looks and feels to much like g10. So at first glance you might not notice it is realy cf.

I absolutely love my Gayle Bradley. By far my favorite EDC and the thwack sound that comes with a solid deployment, makes every day better.

Just as an FYI, the Taiwan CF spydies don't have full CF scales.

The GB, Sage 1, and the others all have G10 scales with a tiny amount of CF overload on top. THey are like 90% g10 and 10% CF.

CTS, I would like some confirmation from someone on what you're saying regarding the cf scales on the GB and Sage 1.. It is the first I have heard anyone say that. Does Spyderco have this documented anywhere? All I have ever seen represented was that they were carbon fiber scales. And not any combination of g10 and carbon fiber, especially 90% g10 and 10% carbon fiber like you're saying. If what you say is true it would seem like a misrepresentation to call them carbon fiber scales. The 2012 catalogue lists their scales as carbon fiber. I would be interested to hear from someone at Spyderco who can confirm whether this is true or not.

Yank the scales and see for yourself. TuffThumbz did it on one of his videos and shows it as well. I've pulled the scales from my Sage 1 and can confirm that it's a mix of G10 (or similar material - I assume it's G10, but it's not Carbon Fiber) on the bottom and Carbon Fiber laminate on top. Not really a mis-representation at all since it is Carbon Fiber (on top).

I absolutely prefer the Laminate mix myself as the surface-texture is pretty awesome. Peel-ply has a good texture, but you lose out on the full-beauty of the Carbon Fiber. Smooth is nice, but not as grippy.

I dont know about not being a misrepresentation. If the scales are 90% g10 they are more g10 than carbon fiber. It would be more accurate, and appear less missleading, if Spyderco called the scales carbon fiber laminate. As they currently have the catalogue discription written it would lead a reasonable person to believe the scales were entirely carbon fiber.

The 90/10 was just my own way of wording it, although if you had to put it into a percentage it may be even less than that.

I don't think spyderco is trying to deceive you at all. If they were then they'd put the CF overlay on both sides. ;)

CTS, it may not be intentional. My guess is they put the scales together that way due to cost factors. Although I could be totally wrong. Perhaps it is done that way to increase the strength and durability of the scales. Even though the cf laminate is not on both sides of the scale, how many people remove their scales to look? I dont, and never would have. I totaly believed they were 100% carbon fiber, based on Spydercos catalogue and advertising. Nowhere have I seen them indicate the cf scales on those models wefe a small percentage of cf laminate with the balance of the scale being g10. I really would love to hear from a Spyderco employee, or Sal, what the scoop is on the scales.

Wait, so let me get this straight, the scales on my Chaparral.. its just CF on the outside but G10 type stuff underneath? Not like it really matters to me (I guess), but i was also under the impression that it was 100% carbon fiber

Picked up a Chaparral today and am quite pleased with the carbon fiber handle scales.

Definitely interested in a Gayle Bradley soon.

About to get my first CF knife period but it will also be my first CF Spydie.
The Spyderco "R" Nishijin Sprint Run.
Yes it's slippery but it's so sexy.

The picture is kind of crappy but this is what the back side of a sage 1 scale looks like.

As long as it holds up great I see no problem with it. I just got my sage 1 today and love the texture of the CF.

Thanks for the pic. What percentage of the scale would you say is carbon fiber? Don't get me wrong fella's. I love my cf knives. I just thought the scales were 100% carbon fiber. And, since they're not, I'm wondering why not. Was it for strength and durability, or was it a cost saving measure? And, why not call it carbon fiber laminate, which would seem more accurate given the scales only have a thin layer of cf laminated to them. Great knives either way. I have a few other cf models on my radar. I just gotta find the right one for the right price, or right trade.:D

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Spyderco "R" Nishijin is not carbon fiber, but rather "glass fiber".

Sorry Jay Ev, I believe you're right.
But it's also called CF by many.
There isn't a huge difference between the two but, they do have some small differences.
Glass Fiber being the more sturdy and resistant of the two.

I'm going off of what I'm reading lol.

Also, got my "R"! It's AMAZING! I love this guy. You guys should get one lol.
