Carbon Fiber!!

I really like CF as well. Never had a problem with slippage, even on the glossy versions. If you anticipate it being a problem, then there are certainly textured CF examples from Spyderco, and I'm sure others. It's hard to tell from this picture, but the Delica has a smooth glossy finish, the Caly III and Kiwi have a smooth matte finish, and the Sage has a pattern textured finish (the grippiest of my collection). I'm pretty sure the Military in peel-ply CF is even grippier though I've never handled it.

I also love CF! I am at work right now and can't post pix.
My Scott Sawby C/U has CF scales.

Hi Gang. For those interested, pix of my Warren Thomas #2 folder are in the Custom and Handmade Knives Forum. Thanks!

Carbon Fiber is now my preferred handle material on a folder. Here's why: Extremely tough.
Light weight.
Easy to touch-up.
Does not shred the inside of my pocket like G-10.
Thanks, Warren! ;)

"carbon fiber" materials are essentially the same as G-10 as regards the surface.

"Carbon fiber" is fabric woven from carbon fiber encapsulated in epoxy.
G10 is fabric woven from glass fiber encapsulated in epoxy.

In either case, the surface you feel is epoxy, not the reinforcing fabric.
It is the final processing that determines whether it is slippery or grippy.

When makers deal with carbon fiber, they like to show off the look of the fabric, so they use processing that produces a shiny finish so that you can ooooo and aahhhh over the look of the carbon fabric beneath the surface.

But there is no inherent difference between the surface of the two materials. You could as easily produce a shiny smooth finish on G10, but the glass fabric isn't so pretty to look at, so most makers don't.

Hi All. Thanks for the pix. I've just looked at some of the nicest knives I've ever seen!
Suz---Get some pix up, when you can.
Jos---Is that a Friction Folder by WH? Beautiful! ;)

Yep, one of them with a laminated ZDP189 blade and one with a ZDP189 "wave" damascus blade. They were called "Legacy". I believe they are no longer produced. Nice little knives.

Kind regards,

Jos

Thanks! I was going to snag one of those awhile back. You know the rest of the story! :)
I love the simplicity of the FF.

...I love the simplicity of the FF...

I am pretty ashamed to recognize that I have no idea what a friction folder is supposed to be. Unless it is a model name... what makes a FF (I guess that stands for Friction Folder) different from the others? Maybe it just doesn't have a lock at all and relies only in friction to stay open?

Please, enligthen me! Thanks in advance,
Mikel

Suz---I knew you'd be back and I'm glad you came! WOW! What a folder. The blade shape is Awesum!! I'd be EDCing that folder! Thanks!

Carbon Fiber is one of my favorite materials for alot of different applications. It's just a Very Functional and Tough Material for just about anything! I am desperately trying to to get a Spyderco Kiwi w/CF since I have been hung on small clipless ~Pocket Knives~ these days. I have had several knives enhanced with Carbon Fiber, and all were better for it IMHO!!!!At this point in my life being able to maintain a death grip on my Pocket Knives is not a Gigantic issue for me. The feel of the knife when I am just sittin around playin with it is. And CF feels good in the hand to me and is Very pleasing to the eye!!!

Very nice knives you have there, babakanoosh45. I don't know if you know this, but when you post in bold, large letters, it is the equivalent of shouting.

Sorry you feel that way. I have always done this so I can read what I typed. Don't take it personal... ~baba~
