Carbon Fiber!!

^lol at internet police.

Baba did buck do the CF? That looks GREAT. I might just need another 110.

This thread needs MOAR SUPERHAWK

No Sir!!! SealsKnives.com Did both the CF 110's as well as several other Hot Redos for me. Dons a great guy!!! Thanks for the kind comments!!! ~baba~

Carbon Fiber is now my preferred handle material on a folder. Here's why: Extremely tough.

I know carbon fiber is very high strength per unit weight, but I've never understood it to be particularly tough.

It's actually rather brittle, isn't it?

There is my humble contribution....a modified Mora a friend gave to me......however it is actually carbon fiber/kevlar weave.....:D

That depends on how you are using it, exactly which version of carbon fiber composite you have, and to what you are comparing it.

In aerospace, carbon fiber composites are indeed considered somewhat brittle. An unsupported segement of carbon fiber composite wing skin can fracture and break when struck, where an aluminum skin would dent. So in that usage and compared to aluminum alloy, carbon fiber composite has an issue with toughness.

But that is not the comparison you want to make for a knife handle. The handle is not unsupported, does not get struck the same way, and you are probably not going to be comparing it to aluminum. You are also likely not using the same resin as an aerospace application.

Toughness is a resin dependent characteristic and has little to do with the fabric reinforcement. Given a piece of G10 and a piece of carbon fiber composite made with the same resin and given the same cure, there will be no noticeable difference in toughness.
