Carbon Fibernosis? Malady or Nirvana?

OP here.

So far, really good thoughts and opinions.

When created, this thread (and I) never took into account the fact that there are a few different colors of CF. On the other hand, every style is basketweave.

Also not recognized was the fact the many non-CF knives and most CF knives are priced out of the reach of many knife lovers.

A few of the comments also helped me realize that perhaps I am just growing tired of CF, not just CF on knives. Cars, watches, pens, wallets, electronics ad infinitum.

One last additional point: I spoke with a composites engineer (of 40 years) today at my shooting range. He suspects that as CARBON NANO FIBER becomes commercially viable, we might see something other than basket weaves in the CF future.

Thank you all for your excellent posts!

What do you mean by basket weaves?

There's things like shred CF which has no real weave, it's just an bunch of pieces suspended in resin

Examples (not mine).....

I tend to place carbon fiber folders in a higher bracket than G10; definitely higher than FRN...which I just don't like.
Most CF's are fine; some are slippery; perhaps by design.

The weave always looks bad to me once it gets shaped to anything except flat. So cf round handles or grooved scales to me look terrible.

Now if it is flat (like scales for the para in this thread) it looks cool. If the scale is round and they would lay and shape the cf (vacuum) to size, it would look great again. (Kitchen knife line from de buyer)

I joyfully and admiringly admit to my "basketweave" mistake. BTW, basketweave patterns are generally tightly woven, criss-crossed (at 90 degree angles to each other) materials. Your marketing gurus came up with "twill."

First time I've seen macerated CF - it is gorgeous!

(Shoot, now I have to have one!!!)

Any other visual variations of CF (aside from basketweave and shredded, black or colored, flat or wavey)?

Haha, I hope you don't mind Blues. It was one of the first results that came up when I searched Google images for silver shred:D

Awesome looking knife BTW:thumbup:

I don't mind at all.
At first I was like "woah! Someone else has a shred ZT! Awesome!" And then I realized it was the picture that BellaBlades posted of my knife lol!

And thanks for the compliment!

Have you checked out Marble Carbon Fiber? Or Unidirectional CF? Marble is something I need in my life!

They also have decorative veneer carbon fiber also, I think spyderco used this on a Domino or something. Or even G10/CF laminate that consists of alternating layers of CF and colored G10.

This is all new information for me. I love hearing about it and, more importantly, seeing it.

Even in my advanced years, I really enjoy learning. Even more so if its about knives!

Special shout out to Krissig12 and Blues Bender ("Jimi') for your special contributions. Your patient sharing and extra efforts are much appreciated.

This is exacly what I had hoped in being the OP.

Keep 'em comin'.

Team CF to the rescue!:D

No problem Burgh:thumbup:

I love all-things-carbon-fiber, so anytime I get to babble about it, I make sure I show all of my cards lol!

I don't mind it. It doesn't seem to chip, break, shrink, crack, warp, or absorb moisture or odor. I can't really ask for much more than that.

I like this answer. I'm not real impressed with bling, and functionally CF is no better than FRN. But I am receiving a ZT 0452CF tomorrow, so I must like it okay.

If you do a quick review of the contents of this thread, IMHO there is a concentrated wealth of information about CF on knives.

I, for one, have not been able to find a "CF & Knives" source anywhere competitive with the info here.

Perhaps you, or another, might think about re-naming this and/or creating a sub-forum.

Merely humble suggestions. Whatever you decide is fine with me.

A CF subforum?:eek::D

I think that's a bit much. There's plenty of these types of threads and the topic certainly doesn't need an entire subforum dedicated to it. Spark still hasn't even gotten around to making the CRK sales forum......you think this would be high on his list of priorities?

Not that I wouldn't hang out there:p

With regards to the OP's original question. I do think that CF will come down marginally in price, at least until a new material comes out. I'm not enmoured with it like some people but I do think textured CF looks and works well. Personally, I would like to see linen or canvas Micarta make a comeback... I've never had any issues with CF but while using it or carrying I'm always afraid of damaging it because it "feels" like expensive, high end material.
