Carbon Steel Hydrogen Peroxide Bluing

Right now I am using standered 3% peroxide. I do swimming pool work and I can get some 27% hydrogen peroxide. I am not sure how that will react with the metal. I do know that if there is alot of copper in pool water and the 27% stuff is added it will stain the pool a blue black color. Not sure how the steel will react. The 27% is called BAQUACIL pool shock and can be bought at some pool supply places. Be warned this stuff is harsh. It will kill your skin and you will be up "blank" creek if you get it in your eyes.

Dan, you could be very well right. What the other guys suggested is very good, too. Cheap and safer bluing, huh? And like I was saying, it wasn't just a light covering, it was really into the metal. I'm going with the copper idea and vinegar with the next try, and maybe add some blood with another batch. Edited to add, Ed, I'm guessing cheepo 3%.

That hp does sound interesting.

I've got some 18% (as opposed to the commercial 3% solution) that I ordered from the internet that I dab on chigger bites cause it kills the little bastids the instant it touches them and for me stops the itching and stops the bites from getting infected, tho' it will turn your skin ghost white with a mild chemical burn which doesn't hurt.

I'd rather have the white patch of skin than the itching.

I'll try some of the 18% and see what it does to the steel.

I popped the same knife into a fresh batch with some pure copper. Dang, the blade is really dark now. I put it back in a couple of weeks or so. A rust looking crud forms on the steel. I gently wiped it off wet with my finger and inspected the blade. It was covered with a thick wet coat of what looked really black gunk. This is probably the stuff that is doing to work on the steel. I put it right back in to cook some more. The blades were recolored where I scrubbed some of the "bluing" off with a Brillo pad before, when I was checking it's durability. Anyone else had any results yet?
