OK, What do y'all carry in your cargo pockets? How does your EDC cargo pocket differ from you 'walk-in-the-woods' cargo pocket?

I carry a Spyderco and PX4 on my waist and a Leatherman Micra in my regular pocket as my EDC. I am still deciding on a multitool, but when I get it I believe it will end up in my cargo pocket as part of my EDC.

Honestly, I can't carry anything but super light stuff in my cargo pockets or my pants feel like they're going funny. I'll carry some light trail mix, a breakfast bar, a hat maybe, gloves... anything heavier than that, and they're swinging too much and it bothers the crap outta me. I try to keep stuff in them that is light and that I don't want to have to look through my pack to get too. My pack is never extremely organized.

I've been know to carry tampons for the wife in my cargo pockets when we go for an all day thing or gathering.

I carry nothing in them, because i like to have nothing in my pocket, exept a vic slodier. But in my chinise version of maxpedistion pack(very good by the way) i carry a phone, money, keys and a couple of folders :)

Usually only something light like a pack of smokes. I have having stuff bumping around in them.

smokes and bic in one, altoid tin in the other. Farmer in front pocket. Other stuff goes in my pack, or on belt.

When I wear cargo pants, the left leg cargo pocket gets my Doug Ritter pocket survival pak, modified to my needs and the right cargo pocket holds an AM Pocket Medic, bandana and the small knife pocket inside of the cargo pocket holds my flashlight.

No difference, as it is my EDC gear. The only changes I make for a woodswalk, are that I add a small shoulder bag or buttpack with some additional gear and sometimes I add a fixed blade knife to my belt.

A brick in a sock on the left side for backup self defense weapon, and $10 of pennies on the right. . .

Ok, not really. I don't usually carry anything in them. Something flat and light would be ok, like a small notepad . But anything lumpy or heavy flops around too much.

It's funny, I haven't owned pants with cargo pockets on them in quite a while. But reading this thread made me remember how useless I find cargo pockets. They are built to hold big stuff...and if you put it there it kicks you in the thigh all day.

I guess it would be okay on tight pants...which I am not okay with men wearing.

About all I ever put in them is a map. Occassionally I'll put bug spray or a bic in the other. Anything heavier is uncomfortable; but I do find them helpful for a map.

misanthropist, you don't like the tight pants? ;)

i only have one pair of pants with cargo pockets, and they are small anyways. last time i wore them i think i ended up with some spare cord and a bandana in them.

i agree on the weight thing, they can get annoying when loaded up with much of anything.

i like the sound of the utilikilt cargo pockets, because they move independently of the legs, so they don't bounce around and smack you in the thighs all the time...

OP. I am actually surprised by the responses thus far. I was expecting more of you to utilize that space. I like the ideas given so far, e.g. lighter, tin, maps, etc. What to put in these pockets bothers me every time I put them on, maybe now I won't let it bother me so much. I will put something useful in them at some point.

Most of my shorts have cargo pockets and the only thing that ends up in them are the kids hats and shades when we go into a store, or a bottle of water. Today, I put my checkbook and a pen in my cargo pockets...

I wear shorts a lot, I carry the plastic case in the Right cargo pocket, very comfortable. Small heavy stuff slaps you...

I can't put anything in those damn pockets. I hate having crap bounce off my legs when I am walking or running. I relaly don't own a pair of pants that are cargo pants other than my BDUs. The only thing I put in those cargo pockets was my beret. Other than that nothig went in there.

I've been rethinking my whole PSK approach and am leaning toward a soft pouch with my PSK in one side and a Sil-Poncho in the other.

I don't put much in them either. Both work and play, I keep Burt's Bees chapstick, Oakely eye-glass cloth, a couple braided lengths of 550 cord, my Bic or Windmill lighter and my Suunto M9 wrist compass; during the winter I have one of those synthetic (Recon Wrap) neck-gaiter things. Cargo pockets are great for temporary storage...putting your hat in one when it's windy; dropping your pliers or multi-tool in quickly when you need both hands, securing your camera when you have to go "four-wheeling" or maybe my binoculars in their not around my neck.

I remember my basic-training days of carrying a canteen in my right cargo pocket and an MRE in the other...you get tired of bulging thighs, heat-rash from the extra friction and a pain in the arse when maneuvering around tight areas. They can come in handy, but I use them for temporary storage when I know it won't interfer with movement or similar activities (i.e. bouldering and rock climbing).
