Cargo Pockets

On one side I carry an iPod Touch, small notebook with pen. On the other I carry a 12 oz. Nalgene (water) flask. I sometimes might carry a wife-made pocket organizer that holds a Vic Farmer w/scissors, Leatherman P2, Ziess Miniquick monocular, AAA Fenix light, and a lighter. It all weighs just under 10 oz. The organizer distributes the weight and makes it less "swingy" feeling.

I also had my wife sew a seam across the bottom of my BDU cargo pockets so the weight rides a little higher on the thigh. The pocket is two inches shorter, but the comfort level goes way up.

I can carry a lot of stuff in comfort without having to resort to a man purse.

A what????

Boy, do I hope it's the pain pills! :(

Doc

Firstly, Doc-- Allow me to say again: I DO NOT carry a man purse. Secondly, others here do. I guess it's okay if it's made out of manly olive drab cordora, but it ain't for me. Cargo pockets work fine.

I do often carry a camera bag, though. It is NOT a purse. :D

Pheww! That scared me. A man purse is an oxymoron. Men do not carry purses. They may carry messenger bags, large PSK bags, camera bags, gear bags, etc. but not purses.

Ron Hood, in one of his videos, referred to one of his carry bags as a purse, but of course, he was being facetious because he, like the rest of us, know MEN DO NOT CARRY PURSES! (Although I seem to remember him walking a little funny in one of his videos
I think he laughinly called it something like the Plainsman stride or some such - hmmmm)

Anyway, Scott, thanks for setting the record straight. Unexpected shocks aren't good for us old geezers.:o

Doc

And then there is that 'sports bra for dudes' thread which I am not going to check out!!!!

Men throughout history have carried purses.

purse (pûrs)
n.
1. A woman's bag for carrying keys, a wallet, and other personal items; a handbag.
2. A small bag or pouch for carrying money.
3. Something that resembles a bag or pouch.
4. Available wealth or resources; money.
5. A sum of money collected as a present or offered as a prize.

You all carry Purses at some point :p

I guess it would be okay on tight pants...which I am not okay with men wearing.

LOL I actually had a friend who wore spandex like pants (subdued) with rugged knee high boots who always seemed to crash our campsite then wander off and leave or something - he was always strange like that. Somehow, he pulled it off and it didn't look that ... well, let's just say he pulled it off (not the pants... lol the look that is). Sorta' robinhood... errr... ish.

Someone as rugged as Ron is... I think I would let it slide.

The correct terminology is MAN-BAG. I used to carry a messenger-like bag and it was very convenient at the time. Now I just throw on a small tactical backpack, it looks more masculine and I swear my chest hair gets just a tad longer whenever I have it on.

I don't really like to carry much in my cargo pockets because it is frumpy and slaps around on my thighs which is uncomfortable physically and mentally as my mind keeps telling me, yo, you got something in ya' pockets. The only thing I put in my cargo pockets is pepper spray. The rest is either on my belt (Guber multi-tool/RAT TAK1) or in my butt/back-pack.

I keep the cargo pockets empty for temporary stuff. I can carry a bottle in my right cargo pocket because that only bumps against my prosthetic foot, so it doesn't bother me.

I think they would work better if you used an organizer like the Spec Ops On Board, but I only put that in my Field Jacket lower pockets. A lot of small, hard stuff just bangs around.

I usually wear hiking pants and don't really notice things in my pockets. Back pocket - space blanket; right upper front pocket - compass, lighter, whistle, small flashlight, knife; right lower front pocket - cell phone; left lower front pocket - small first aid kit; left upper front pocket - maybe a small bag of gorp.

It's funny, I haven't owned pants with cargo pockets on them in quite a while. But reading this thread made me remember how useless I find cargo pockets. They are built to hold big stuff...and if you put it there it kicks you in the thigh all day.

Mine are attached to a pair of German Bundeswehr OD moleskin pants and they really aren't designed for anything larger than what I carry. The pants are more tailored and streamlined so the pockets don't flop around with gear in them and the pants are less likely to catch on brush, etc. I have tried the US military and other similar cargo pants and they are too lose, pockets too big, etc.

When outdoors, or traveling under circumstances that might see me stuck for a while between towns, I usually have a pocketknife (Byrd) in an upper pocket, a Coghlan's whistle/compass/mirror gadget in a cargo pocket, maybe a spool of 80-pound braided fishing line in a cargo pocket. Often I'll put my wallet in one cargo pocket and my sunglasses in the other. I usually have a multi-tool on my belt, not in a pocket--rides better on the belt, and is always getting used. Usually have a magnifying glass and card wrapped with 80-pound braided fishing line along, too--and a firesteel and mini LED light on my keychain. Just lately--on someone's clever advice--I've taken to duct-taping a couple of small fishhooks and a couple of large sewing needles into the tool channels in the handles of my multi-tools. Very little space, but very handy if you wind up needing them. By the way, ToolLogic's little kits, about the size of a fat credit card, might not be bad for filling the niche of something to carry just so that you always have basic survival gear with you. Just remember to leave out the knife when you're going to be going through some kind of security checkpoint where they frown on knives (e.g., airports, courts, government offices.)

No

Longbow those german pants sound pretty decent though...might have to look into those.

I sometimes keep my cell phone or a small digital camera in a cargo pocket and an extra car key. Knives flop around too much in there. I keep some paper towels there often for "whatever".

Small FAK, AAA Mag, Electrical tape..sometimes granola bars if i am out and about (hypoglocemic) I dont put much in them because, like everyone else has said, it's annoying...

Most days I carry a pouch similar to one of these in one cargo pocket:

And I usually have whatever paperback I'm reading in the other.

When I'm out for a hike then the book goes in my pack and the pocket organizer has loops on the back to attach to a belt if it's swinging around too much and bugging me.
