Carling vs. Guinness. . . . Let's get it on!!!!

Guinness! Drink it from the bottle here - happened to visit Ireland & drank it from the tap! Also enjoyed Smithwick's Ale in Ireland. What's a Carling Black Label?:D :D

Ok, I confirmed it last night. Not one liquor store in Springfield, IL carries CBL. Not a single one, so looks like your are just gonna have to bring some over this way Jerry. Must be pretty bad if the liquor merchants here don't sell it. One guy said they haven't had any for at least 6 years, but he gets people calling for it all the time. There must be more lurkers in this area than I thought.

Guinness is the Busse of the beer world. Around here you can also get Great Lakes Brewing Co. beers. The Edmund Fitzgerald Porter (aka "Wreck") is very good. Unfortunately, they don't bottle any of their stouts :( If something higher octane is required, Glenfiddich is the answer.

A note on CBL. A buddy of mine was just talking about his days in Vietnam and how he didn't see a Bud or Miller while there, "only sh-t you've never heard of, like Carlings".

I hope you don't cut me off the INFI forever, but;
CBL = :barf:
Guinness = :D

To me Guiness tastes like day old beer that had some coffee spilled in it... If I am drinking beer I like Oranjaboom!! Good stuff.. I like **** with more stopping power than beer tho!;)

Well, Swede, as somebody once said, there's a thin line between bravery and stupidity ;) maybe I've crossed over. Maybe it's the stout talking, I have found alcohol seems to make me very smart. I'm glad Jerry started this thread, we can argue knives all day, BUT THIS IS IMPORTANT **** WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE!! :rolleyes: :D :eek:

For an important note on the properties of Guinness, read Andy McNab's "Immediate Action".

I've never much cared for the export Guinness that you get here in the States. Freshly brewed in Ireland is a different story.
I like a brew with some flavor. Not the watery American beers like Bud lite. If you've got a good local "micro-brewery" in your area, that's usually hard to beat.

I don't know how all those Guiness fans can like a chewy beer that you can't drink through a straw. It's like a dark, bitter, lactose-free milkshake.

Feh.

My old man drank CBL, so I guess there's an emotional attachment, but these days I prefer something along the lines of Hocker Pschorr or Warsteiner. I must have some German blood in me.

You know, until I discovered that I really like Sam Adam's Cream Stout, I was a devout patron of Guinness. I still get a tall glass of that dark beauty every time I go out. The best part about this crummy little town I live in is that you can literally get Guinness on tap EVERYWHERE! That aside, I always say that I won't drink anything that isn't purest black. After all, its really the only way to know you're not drinking some guy's piss (all that disgusting "Pale" crap), and hey, if YOU drink something that is all black and it IS some guy's piss- well, at least you have the satisfaction of knowing the bastard will be dead soon. :D !!!

Sincerely,
Anthony

SpyderJon,

Finally! A good reason to drink Guinness. . .. Now I might have to try it again!

LOL

Jerry

Actually Guinees is dark in color, but it is not thick. Believe it or not it is a thinner beer than most. That's why when you make a Black n Tan the Guiness goes on TOP!! If you try to layer another beer(most)on top of Guiness it will seep down into the Guiness because it is THICKER and HEAVIER than the Guiness. So let's please stop will all this milkshake nonsense! Guiness is a thin,dark beer.

Mr. Busse, I'm glad you liked the reasoning. I bow in humblest acceptance of your praise :D

And no, Guinness really isn't all that thick. I think that people have this conception of what it really does taste like, and they go on that. I know many people who've only tried it once, and not having been prepared for the fact that Guinness is 1) a sipping beer, and 2) an aquired taste, they "remember" it being really thick because you can't actually see through the damn glass. But hey, exactly HOW thick can something POSSIBLY be when it has Nitrogen pumped into it as it comes out of the tap?

Oh, and I like my Guinness warm- the way it was MEANT to be drank. :D

Guiness is great!

A fantastic mass-produced stout by any rate. It is in fact thinner as you described and I am not sure why people think it is bitter considering thefact stouts have very little hops and no bittering hops to my knowlege. Sure doesnt taste bitter to me. Color is something that depends on the intention, you dont want a black IPA or pilsner. I have tasted piss-beers that were as black as midnight and light beers that rival Guinness's hearty flavors.

One light colored beer that you Guinness fans might enjoy (if you havent already come across is Belhaven's Scottish Ale. It comes in a similar pint can that guinness comes in and also has a wiget. What you will imeadiatly be enthralled by (if you are like me) is that it is light as a pilsner but has that wonderful cascade that guinness has. The flavor is exceptional, even non-beer drinkers say its great. We used to say if Guiness is the "Beer that eats like a meal" Belhaven is the "Beer that eats like a desert". Belhaven also makes a good Wee Heavy that will put lead in yer pencil, if ya got someone to write to.

I just had a Bayhawk chocolate stout a couple weeks ago that was brewed last year and good old guinness paled in comparasin. I also have a fondness for He-Brew (the Chosen Beer) Genesis stout, though its flavor is different, opting for more speacial ingredients than just malt, grains, n hops.

Kinda like knives in a way; The big producers are about consistency and marketing over quality. The smaller producers are better quality and offer a taste of customs at a production cost and availibility. And then there are homebrewers like myself, when you need the beer custom tailored and juuuuust right.

BTW this is my first post in the Busse forum. (I usually lurk nowadays) but I have to say I am very impressed of what I have seen of bot Busse and Swamp Rat and look forward to owning some someday soon. :)
