"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Sorry to hear this Ken. Rocky, the GSD pictured in my avatar was the best friend I ever had. If you aren't a dog person, or haven't had a GREAT dog, its hard to understand how the loss can have such a strong impact. Best wishes.

"Legend has it that soon after Creation, the earth was torn in two. Man was on one side of the chasm, all the animals on the other. Only the dog tried to find a way across to join the man. He tried to jump the huge abyss but only his forepaws reached the far edge. Man reached down and pulled him to safety, saying, "You shall be my companion forever."…..Indian legend

Candi,

Thanks for your years of unselfish companionship

Ken

I've been there and I share your loss, Ken. I'm sure you are thankful for the years of companionship you shared.

My condolences, Ken. Candi will have friends up there.

Ken,

Knowing way too well your loss, my sincere condolences to you and yours.

Thanks for the well wishes guys, means a lot to me.

Jake,

Great picture of your hound! :) puts a smile on my face,

Hey guys! just wanted to share that my company has hired me as a full time employee. I pretty excited and needed a place to share. plus (hopefully) this will float a little more money into my knife fund!

Thanks guys, and I have yet to determine a promotion knife lol. I am saving up for a Florida trip. But I will likely get some thing.

Congrats Bladecrazy.

Since reading about them in Backwoodsman several years ago, I have been intrigued by bolt action .410's. Got a great deal on one at a recent gun show. We talk about knives with character, this shotgun definitely has it.

A lot of the Wards and Sear's stuff was Stevens.

Is there any marking on the barrel for the choke? Being .410, it's probably a full, but you never know. Take some large brown paper and test it for pattern, to get an idea of how it shoots. Sometimes you can vary the pattern by switching loads. Higher velocity loads will shoot a bit wider, with the low brass lower dram load shooting a tighter pattern.

The .410 is a very underrated gun. Very cool. A slug out of a .410, has near the power of a .357 revolver round. Number 5 shot will give you a great general field gun. But you have to be more exacting in form and skill than with a larger gauge.

Carl.

I thought you guys might like to see my saturday morning project. Im pretty sure its traditional :)

An old bread knife that my grandmother seemed to use for everything. She gave it to me when I was around 12 to make a new handle. Its been decades, and I guess better late then never, but saturday morning I grabbed some hand tools and attempted a hidden tang handle. The second time I have ever tried. The first was more successful but the blade was thicker so all I had to do was cut the opening with drill bits. Remember when you look at these guys, its just for fun, and just for my grandma :)

Here was the rough attached work

Its not close to the most impressive handle I have made, but she will like it, and its just going to get used and abused in the kitchen.

My hats off to the guys that make hidden tang knives. With my limited experience and tools I ended up having to cut an opening in from the side.

Made me realize how easy slabs on a full tang are compared to something like this.

Saw a friend of the family at my fathers shop on Friday, reminded me of something he said a couple years ago. This guy gets by on a Case lockback,

,

Anyway, he's had it for a long time, since he was a kid. Always has it with him, keeps it stropped and sharp. Uses it on deer or daily tasks. Someone at a party told me he carries a knife, my father told him I was a "little crazy" ;) about knives. Anyway, I started to take my knife out of my pocket, and he stopped me, saying "You probably have a big knife that could build a shelter and you could use as a spear. All I need is this little Case knife. It's done everything I need it to do, and I don't need anything else."

I think he needs another knife ;). A Case just like the one he has, and a bone Case lockback.

Reminds me of another story, involving him. The whole crew was down at another buddys shop in the commercial park, and the "old man" (one of our buddies who has passed on), God rest his soul, asked my father if he could use his knife. My father handed it to him, and comments were made that it was a fine knife. My father told him that I had given it to him. The old man responded that every responsible man should carry a knife. The guy who owns the knife above said "Where the hell is your knife?"

Since this isn't WC, I can't post what the ol' man responded with ;).

A case lockback with carbon fiber handles. Only .6 Oz. I`d consider it for a really lightweight locking folder.

I meant to ask this yesterday, but is anybody else not a fan (I mean no offense if you are) of the "modernized" case knives? I am just getting into collecting/carrying traditional knives but i find i would much rather have a wood or bone handle that a g10 or CF, in my opinion those are the materials that make the traditional knives great aesthetically speaking.

Thanks for the link. It depends on if the knife looks good to me or not. I like to see a Benchmade or Spyderco with carbon fiber or G10. A slipjoint though? Not really.

yeah that was my thought, but even on moderns i prefer TI scales like are on my Spyderco sage 2. But i don't carry modern any more cause I am sold on traditional.
