"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Robert, I look forward to the day.

Was just kidding with a couple of makers who sent their knives rather than fly with them. Pretty much do that every year for anyone who wants to do it. I have been very fortunate to be able to attend Blade each year since the mid '80's. I joked with them saying who needs Blade now that I have their knives. :D

It is not the knives any more. It is the people who have become friends and the possibility of making new ones. I'll miss two brothers dearly(Elliott and GigOne) this year who can not attend as well as quite a few good people who are no longer with us - James Mathis, Bill Moran, Holger Enge, Bob Neal and way too many more, but nothing, not even the most desirable knife on earth, whatever that is, can surpass being around the friends that will be there. The whole thing may be hard to understand unless you have had the experience. Although our little forum here does reflect it to a pretty decent degree.

I look forward to experiencing just that Gus! I don't keep a lot of money aside for buying more knives but I have made some great friends on here because of them. Will try for next year if things have settled, be a good excuse too for my wife to visit her brother who just got back from Iraq (he's a state trooper in GA after finishing his contract). Look forward to seeing the pics you guys muster up on here! :D:thumbup:

Have you considered going to A.G. Russell's knife event down in northern Arkansas?

I havent actually, since getting state side all I've done is work and do stuff locally...will need to look into that one as well (although blade is one I must go to with some frequency when I'm settled). Good thing about my location is its central to everything in the lower 48! :)

Mark,

these pics are great. I have never seen original pics from that time. Everything I saw was this, which is showed off in Western Films.

Great photo-show! Thank you! :)

Kind regards
Andi

Here is a pic from the old west here in KS (actually this was taken just up the road in the next town)...one of my wifes ancestors took this pic, my mother in law has the original.

Hey there Mark,

Whoa!. I am quite pleased and much obliged for your kind efforts to share these old late 1800's Western photographs. I can't stop looking at them!

Best,
Anthony

For all the friends in here that helped me through my grandmother breaking her hip I figured I would give an update.

Its been about five months and she is doing well but still challenged getting around. I take her to PT twice a week so that helps.

I decided to make something to help her. A friend I used to work with and I started on a ramp to her door. So far in the pic today we made the deck out of the door. It will have a 13 foot ramp attached perpindicular (1 foot for every inch of elevation drop). Making a railing for it all around also.

Here is one days work. You could drive my truck on it. So solid and level. Takes out the two steps and its flush with the bricks below her door.

Hey guys,

Am I allowed to ask on here what a decent price to pay for a older knife would be, say one that I saw locally but I'm not sure is a good/bad deal?

Thanks.

Hi, I left you a visitor message regarding your question.

You're a good man, Kevin.

Carl.

Great idea, Kevin! A nice work too. My grandmum is already 87 years old and can still walk around - not very good but ok. I hope she´ll stay in that for still a long time. She told me last thursday: "When I´ll come to hospital, I won´t come back home." I believe her...

Kind regards
Andi

Thanks guys! She is excited but not. The idea of getting around easier makes her happy but I think the necessity depresses her. I don't know. It must be terribly frustrating for her but its also frustrating for her care takers (her family).

Anyhow, thanks Andi and I hope your grandma is wrong. My grandmother tells me she never expected to make it back home after her surgery and 3 weeks in rehab. But she did :)

So here is to hoping.

Anyhow, I will post up a pic of the finished work. After a few months of letting the PT wood dry I am going to paint it redwood. I am hoping to find some kind of grip paint. I don't know if mixing sand in normal paint would work??

Any hints would be appreciated.

I made one when my mom had cancer before she died so she could get out to her garden and made it neat and laquered it then put strips of grip tape made specifically for ramps that can handle the weather and spaced them out about 1.5"...it works quite well.

Great job on the ramp so far, looking real good. :)

Thanks Rob! I will look into the grip tape next trip to the store this week. Did u coat it and then put the grip tape or grip tape then coating? Also, did it stick well to the PT wood? What we r working with is sopping wet at the moment.

Thank you

I went with a 1 gallon primer and 2 gallon eco aggregate deck paint. I have to belt sand at 60grit first so I figure that will be enough traction for the summer months until the wood is ready for paint.

Its put on after its completely finished, kinda like a skate board deck.
