"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of my eye yesterday morning when I went out onto the back porch, and looked just in time to see a red fox jumping over my compost heap like a deer or something - about a 4’ high by 8’ long effortless leap. Obviously I did not get a picture, but here are some random pictures of my yard (also from yesterday), and you can use your imaginations. It happened by the shed you can see there.

This morning I ventured up a ladder to cut a branch off a wild cherry that had some sort of tent worms on it:

Here is the tree loaded with cherries. It was a self-starter which I transplanted to a corner of my yard, and is quite a hub of bird activity these days:

88 degrees in the shade at 10 am. Supposedly going up to 97 today with high humidity - a pretty typical Washington “dog day”:

The mockingbirds in my neighborhood seem to have been mostly displaced by catbirds. Their antics are similarly amusing, but I miss the crazy-sounding racket the mockingbirds used to make. They seemed to like to do it from a high perch in the mornings and afternoons when the sun was at a fairly low angle.

Sorry if I’m boring you all. Good thing I can’t hear you groaning or see you rolling your eyes from across the internet.
No way! Get back out there for a pic of the rascal....and some cherries....do cherries need frost?

Your foxes are better looking than our foxes.
We have the California Grey Fox where I live.
Dang things look like an over-grown squirrel. :D
Yeah Im a squirrel....come on other squirrels ..lets play tag....It's all part of their cunningness...great pic John
The Currawong...listen to them in the background to hear why they are so named.

Gary, Some years back we had a red fox that would sit under a tree and watch me lawn cast with my fly rod, the line attracted the hummingbirds too. The last time I saw one in the neighborhood it looked rough, very mangy. I think the coyotes have taken a toll on them.

We don't see them often here, and they usually stay near the woods at the end of our property. I've seen a few coyotes but only a few.

This was a scene in our back yard about 5 years ago .

That had to be fun to watch, Harry. Nice picture!

Here's one my son got a pic of as it was checking out his neighbor's chicken coop.

I've never seen a Grey Fox, John. That's a great picture!

Long post 1st I guess everyone thought I took off again I just looked and my last post was on July 2nd. I had a health issue (not covid-19) that put me in the hospital a few days then I had to go stay at my daughters for a couple of weeks to recuperate I finally got home yesterday. I love my daughter and her family and really appreciate them taking me in and taking care of me but the old saying "there's no place like home" is so true. Anyway I'm much better now and really glad to be home and enjoyed pulling up a chair on the porch the wildlife you guys have been posting. Oh yea my new camera came during all this so I'll be posting my first pictures today with it.

Randy I had a friend that owned a “cabin” in Brevard, shocked me the first time I saw one of those squirrels. We have big Fox squirrels in the Sandhills that almost look like raccoons.

Forgot to post the rest of what I wanted to post here.
There's a town not far from Asheville called Brevard, NC and it is home to the rare White Squirrels. They are only found in a few places. I've saw them many times but never photographed them so this is not my picture.

We have a lot of them here about 12 miles East of Brevard. I see at least a dozen during the week in my yard

I don't believe I've ever even heard of these squirrels before now. Glad I ran across this post.

I lost it again! I know it was in my pocket.

It isn't in my chairs; maybe my brother's car. If it turns up again I'll take my checkering file to it. If it doesn't turn up I'll be spared the drudgery of checkering it.

This'll hold it for now. I think I ordered this sheath for my Lansing-made Scandi tanto before I got a Buck General sheath for that.
All I've done here is fold up some milk-jug plastic and stuff it down to keep the steel off the leather. A couple of holes and a couple of laces and it will be a dangler.

My daughter came to town yesterday, bought my 2007 Ford Focus (for $1 ), and we transferred title and license plates at the Secretary of State office. For the first time in 51 years, I don't have a vehicle of my very own (my wife and I will share her 2005 Honda Civic from now on - my name is on the title, but it's been her car for 15 years); feels very strange! Supposedly, my life is simpler now. ;)
