"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

jc57 jc57 John, so sorry to read about your kitty. It's a hard thing to put them down when they still are otherwise "with it". We had cats years ago and both had to be put down for cancer and thyroid issues. They were both otherwise normally behaving cats, so putting them down was super hard. We ended up not having pets for years, it was just too painful to think about putting another one down. Luckily we got over that, and now have a wonderful rescue cat. Give your other kitties an extra squeeze tonight.

Gonna have to say goodbye to that pretty little white face in my avatar tomorrow or the next day. She's got cancer and her time is about up. She had surgery to remove the original tumor earlier this year and that gave us about another 6 months, so I am grateful for that time. But it has spread to her lungs and nothing can be done really.

Her name is Daisy. That photo is shortly after she came to us, abandoned and lost, on a cold November night 8 years ago, just before Thanksgiving. We took her in. She needed medical care, and got it. Vet thought she was probably 7 to 9 years old then. I tried hard for a couple of weeks to find her owner. No luck. So she joined our family.

Pretty good run for a cat, 15 to 17 years. She has been my snuggle buddy and bed mate through all through this whole change of lifestyle and perma-work-from-home since the Covid lockdown began. Her loss is going to leave a very big hole in my life and heart. We have other cats, buts this one is my sweetheart.

Tonight may be our last snuggle.

Not sure why I posted this here but I know many of us have lost loved pets and so there's some kinship. Guess I just wanted to share it somewhere.

Putting a pet down is a tough thing. They are like one of our children. Tough. I'm sorry about your furry child.

When we had to put down Pearl the Wonder Corgi, it was a really painful thing. She'd been with us for 17 years, and was a total part of the family. I'm really gonna loose it when it comes time to part wth Abby, our 6 year old Australian shepherd. She's my total princess girl.

Funny how we humans become sooooo attached to our pets.

Thanks, folks. Don't want to drag down everyone's spirits. She's at peace now and not suffering. I am not alone - I have a wife and 4 other cats. I love all of the other fur babies too, but she was my special sweetie for the last few years. Life goes on for the rest of us.

Sorry to hear about your knee, Carl. Hope you recover well from that surgery and are up and hiking again soon!

Sorry to hear this, John. I do know what you're going through. Always tough.

Thanks. Home from the hospital last night and so far the only hiking I'm doing is on the walker around the house. Doing laps from the bedroom, out through the living room, around the kitchen island, and back through the living room.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Treat this one as a "get better soon" card...

Glad to hear you are home and on the mend. I haven't had to have any joints replaced yet, but I have a couple that are acting up. Something to look forward to...

Good luck buddy, hope you're fully recovered soon 🙂👍

Noooooo, not something to look forward to!

I was told 4 years ago I needed a full replacement in 2 years, but pushed it as far as I could go. NOT FUN.
Speaking from the experiences of 2 times when I was 73 and 81 : Hang in there my friend because it will get much better in a couple of weeks .

I know exactly what you speak of. I had my left hip replaced two and a half years ago after pushing way to far. My orthopedic doc said that it was the worst one he’d ever seen. He told me he’d try to keep the leg the same length as the other but couldn’t guarantee it. The good news is I’m pain free but one leg is shorter than the other so I’m using a cane in order to walk. Don’t wait! Just get it done.

and it really depends. For example, my last patient on thursday was in his 90s and the knees are gone. However, at that stage of the game, replacing them is not necessarily the best course of action. Hes just gonna play out the rest of the clock. Also no surgeon in their right mind would consider recommending it.

It was a good day at the flea market.

Nice drill! That is literally what we had in our house as I was growing up as a drill, though ours was less patinated.
So did we, but not as fancy as this one: two-pinion mechanism and 5 different ratchet modes! (at least in theory. The slide button that switches modes doesn't want to slide. I'll see what it does after a good soaking in WD-40)

Are you going to leave the main blade as is?
I probably will, but I might change my mind once I start sharpening.

I'm very sorry to hear this John. It's a hard blow when we lose a loved one. And that's what they are.
