"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

That reminds me of the day in 1968 when I was at the induction center waiting to go to the airport to fly to Lackland. I was sitting in a restaurant across the street from the center and started talking to some other guys. I asked them which branch they were joining and they said they had just let themselves be drafted. Since the draft was only for two years and enlisting was a three or four year commitment (depending on the branch) they were going to go with two years in the Army and take their chances on what kind of assignment they got. Just then one of their buddies came running in wide-eyed and said, “They’re drafting for the Marines today!” They all jumped up and took off across the street to see whether it was to late to join the Army. I never did hear how they came out.

I'm old too!
This reminds me of a story about my trip to Lackland AFB for USAF basic training in January of 1971. Our group got on a plane in Syracuse, NY for the flight. There was a friendly stewardess who was chatting with us and asked where we were headed. We told her and she said her brother had been in the Air Force and really liked it. There was another group of young men on the plane that she chatted with later. They told her they were headed for Paris Island for Marine basic training. She said she felt sorry for them and wished them good luck.
Funny the things you remember...
I thought you were going to say that she told them her brother had been a marine and he really liked it. 🤣

We're pretty well dried out from the flash flood ten days ago, but the cleanup continues. A guy's coming this morning to give estimate on garage doors, and the dump trucks & front end loaders are scheduled to be here Friday to remove the debris from the lower back yard. We have everything else in pretty good shape, considering.

The lower part of the back yard:

And some knife content. Today's carry:Image.jpg

There was a heck of a lot of water to move that much rock!!
I'm glad it's not too horrible for you!! Scary!! 😲
I have four cords of firewood stacked between the garage & the house. The water was washing rocks bigger than 5 gallon buckets right past it, and piled large rocks & debris in front of, and around it, but not one piece of wood washed away. I'm not complaining though. You can see it in the bottom pic of post # 35,076. An older Amish couple rode up in their wagon last evening, stopped & were sitting there looking at it. Weird!:)

For all of us Camillus Cutlery fans. This is the site of the old factory today.

Cool sign

We've had a rafter of a dozen or more Turkeys at times in our yard.
I regularly have three of them that run up from the woods when I'm filling my bird feeders. I call them the "Three Amigos". I toss a few scoops of seed on the lawn for them. They'll peck away at the seed unbothered by my presence.

A beautiful day to visit our local apple orchard. Beak and Skiff has been here since 1911. I'm sitting in the shade guarding a peck or two of apples and some apple wine and hard cider while my wife and SIL shop some more
The only cloud on the day is it's 9/11. I'm remembering where I was when it happened and mourning all those lost to us.

At 0700 this morning they arrived to clear the rock & debris from my back yard & my neighbours. They just now loaded up the last piece of equipment & headed down the road. There were six skid loaders, a large Cat bulldozer, and three tri-axel dump trucks. The dump truck drivers said they hauled away 45 loads, at approximately 22 tons per load, for a total of 990 tons.

Another Birthday🎂 knife, this Shun with a 4" laminated blade is aching to do some work in the kitchen!! Magically sharp, it free-slices tissue paper!!
A thoughtful gift from my walking buddy from down the street (who is the only person I trust with sharpening my kitchen knives!!), I can't wait to slice a tomato for lunch!! 😁 Shun B Day.jpg
