"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

The beaver is very territorial, I have seen skinned beavers with 30 puncture scars from fighting, but yes alot come from being attacked by other critters but mostly from fighting for territory.a few years back we went down a remote creek off the Nelson river In Northern manitoba, now we had a 15' Lund and maybe a 15 hp motor and not 30 yards down the creek we hit a dam,so we decided to gun the motor and just when the nose hit the dam we would pull the motor up and jump the dam,our objective was to moose hunt a lake at the end of the creek because we hadn't heard of anyone being up that way in years,so after the first dam we hit another 75 yards down stream so we did the same routine gun it and pull motor, so after doing this 20 times or more we reached the end were we hit a dam that was easily 15 yards wide and 80 yards long,it was a labor of love a real work of art,and left us no way to reach the lake that awaited us on the other side. There was an old trappers shack a 100 yards in the bush that had a few names engraved of parents of people we knew, the engraving was from 1962,which was probably the last time someone was down that way before the beavers took it over, side note great rainbow trout fishing because the beavers dams made it a very deep creek.but will never see a beaver dam like that again,we couldn't even wiggle a small stick out of it.

Regarding cougars: Here in Eugene we certainly don't have to worry about fish and wildlife trying to secretly introduce more, we have plenty. A decade or so back there was a guy whose goats kept getting nabbed out of his enclosure. His house was on the far side of a park near my house. So they set up cameras and traps and relocated three cougars out of the park, and caught another on camera. The goat predation stopped, so apparently that was enough. But it was wild to think that even though it is a big wilderness/hiking park, that a park inside of a city of 180,000 could have so many big cats.

I've never seen a cougar in the wild, though I know I have been very close to them many times. One place that I was working, the property owner had wildlife cameras set up, and a cougar and I crossed paths multiple times (heading opposite directions each time) within minutes of each other one day. And I've had other times that I was pretty sure cougars were around, but like I said, I've never seen one. But they are all around here in the Willamette Valley.

As a teenager, I went to Santa Cruz to visit my aunt and uncle and stay a few weeks. We were hiking one of the trails right along the coastline of the ocean, and came around a bend and there was a cougar sitting right on the trail, less than 20 yards. My aunt is blind, so had her seeing-guide dog with her. We all stopped, the dog stared intently but didn't bark. About 5 seconds of staring, and the cat jumped into the tall brush on the side of the trail and that was all we saw of it. We turned around and went back the way we came, looking over our shoulder nonstop.

We have many mountain lions here in Modoc County, CA. Not only here but pretty much all over CA. They've even built an overpass over a freeway down in LA so mountain lions and other wildlife can cross the freeway without harm. Years ago a Proposition on a state wide ballot banned the hunting of mountain lions and since then, they've become a real problem in our area. Now, wolves are becoming a real problem too. My sister, out in Tacoma, sent us a mystery package on April 6th. She does that occasionally. It passed right by us, and arrived in Jersey City on the 10th. Yesterday, it went to Rochester, NY, then on to Syracuse last night. It left Syracuse at 5:45 this morning and USPS Tracking says that expected delivery is today. Syracuse is over 250 miles away. While I suppose it's possible, delivery isn't likely today. At least not here.

When my sister sends us one of her packages, we're always afraid that a USPS SWAT team will show up at our door with it. My sister is into, let's just say, "herbal" remedies. While they may be legal in WA, some of the lotions & potions she sends my wife, require a medical marijuana card here in PA.:)

sheesh! new desktop arrived today.
I forgot how long it takes to set one up.
Oh well. Hopefully I won't have to reboot every few hours to restore the Wi-Fi ... and isle recall how to type two handed using a full-size keyboard.
My wife got a new machine a few months ago. I found this article helpful. Windows default settings maximize the amount of your information that the system sends to Microsoft. You can reduce the amount of data it sends if you override some of those settings.

I just noticed that Rob, Primble Primble hasn't been around for a few weeks. I think he's in the area of Kentucky that was having heavy flooding. I hope he's just taking a break and hasn't been affected by the flooding too bad.
I hope he's OK too but Rob has 'form' in taking a break from the Forum and knives (not a bad example for some of us....) and pursuing his obsession with fishing

I like to have a fixed blade when I'm out and about in our regional parks. I've only had one person ask why I carry such a big knife (i.e., a puukko). I told her it's just in case, since mountain lion habitat covers at least half the state. Pointed out that if she's ever seen a deer that probably means that there's a mountain lion not too far away as deer are their primary source of food.

😳

Just taking a break to get some spring work done … thanks for thinking of me. Flooding affected many in my area, fortunately I live near the top of a hill and had no problems. 😊
