"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Last year, people actually called one storm around here the "Snowpocalypse".

:D

Here, (a place where there's wind and rain about 350 days a year - or so it seems), you'd think people would be glad of a bit of snow, just for a change! :D

Jack

What is this "snow" that you're talking about? Is it that fluffy white stuff that occasionally covers the ground?

I love living in a Mediterranean climate!

:D

What fluffy white stuff? Oh, you mean that stuff that sometimes turns the mountain peaks white?

I've had to start watering the garden already. Already had brush fires this year. Sheesh.

Whoa. You do know that it's winter right? A technicality, but still.

Be careful down there.

Pretty exciting day for me, heading up to M.S. Jon Christensen's to forge some mosaic damascus. Jon is one of the best, and has won many awards for his complex patterns. Good times.:)

That sounds like it'll be an amazing experience, Kris! I've never owned one of Jon's, but I've seen many and his work is incredible. If you get some pics don't forget to post them.

Agreed, that is way cool, what an experience! You're a lucky dog... :)
I too hope you get a chance to take some pictures to share with us.

I watched Larry Nowicki make a letter opener at his house for me, so I could see what went into forging a knife. I've also been lucky enough to watch Scott Gossman at work. Watched him take a piece of bar stock, and hog off some steel, turning it into a Tusker. It was a long time, I got tired watching him! I also dropped by Scott's house once, to watch him heat treat some O1 blades, and A2. Air hardened steel is still neat to me.

I had a chance to make some blades with Larry, but never did. Still kick myself for not coming down.

Thanks for the interest guys, Jon and I had a great day yesterday. I would have spent today there, but we are closing on our house. Our personalities mixed quite well and it won't be the last time I go over, as Jon loaned me a Growler bottle so I could get it filled at the local brewery. Jon was working on a new pattern. I only took a few pics, as I was thoroughly enjoying myself.

Jon on the Power Hammer ( Jon gave me a try on it, takes a lot of finesse )

Jon is one of nicest knifemakers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and I think we both really enjoyed each others company. Until next time, thanks Jon

In Westminster a couple years ago, at the Blacksmith Days, J Neilson, Deker and Butch Harner provided a class on damascus, bladesmithing etc. I had a time keeping up with the tutorial, but I had a great time!

Got a question for the knowledgeable folks here about Minwax. I want to get a small container for my collection. I have pieces, both folders and fixed, with ebony, cocobolo, rosewood, bubinga, Brazilian cherry and desert ironwood. I was looking at Minwax the other day, and was going to go with the catch all.

What do you guys use to keep up appearances with your wood handled knives?

I recently sent a knife out to a customer that I knew had an interest in watches. I asked , before he cut the check for the knife, if he had anything in a vintage , somewhat dressy watch. Not too big , and manual was fine. He (and he can chime in here if so inclined:D) thought for a bit, we discussed an option , then offered this watch up. I said that sounds great without seeing the watch, taking his opinion for what I wanted without question. I said to him, just deduct whatever you want for the watch from the price of the knife.

Well today this showed up! Gifted no less. Thank you so much, it is perfect.

^ That's a nice gesture. Nice watch too :)

So do we get to see the knife? ;)

I like the face - nice and simple! I don't know much about watches, but I've never seen a leather band with clasp like that before. It's like the best of both worlds.

And classic! I have not seen a leather band with this type of clasp either. Very good quality and great looks, function.

Twenty five years ago I minded the daughter of the owner of the Boston Celtics for a while. The watch was a present.
