"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Yes indeed, Happy Yorkshire Day! :D I see there's rain coming up from the south, bloody typical! :grumpy: ;)

I WAS hoping to go off Questing today, but my plans have been torpedoed by a lunchtime meeting with a chap from London. I've managed to convince him that Yorkshire Day is taken so seriously here, we'll need to converse entirely in the proper English spoken hereabouts, otherwise he may get lynched. I shall of course be suggesting something involving mushy peas or Yorkshire pudding for lunch, with pints of Yorkshire ale. I'm just wondering how far I'll be able to push it before he realises I'm pulling his leg! :D

Happy Yorkshire Day, Jack. I'll have to pull out this Yorkshire Rose pin you sent me. Mushy peas sounds good. Is it just peas that you cook until they get mushy? I can do that. :D

I had an aunt like that. Everything she cooked was well done. Veeeery well done.

Ha, ha! My mother cooked like that. Everything was crunchy: eggs, pancakes, everything. We loved it! I'm not joking, I really loved crunchy breakfast. The first time I went to a restaurant and ordered chicken, I called the waiter over: "This chicken is moist inside! Are you trying to kill me with salmonella?"

So Faith in humanity restored.

On monday I lost my wallet. No clue when or where. I KNOW i had it at work at some point after lunch but i did NOT have it when i got home. I spent the next two days looking for it tearing the warehouse apart and the house apart and no luck. I finally gave up, got a new drivers license, canceled and ordered new debit cards etc etc the whole nine yards. Very annoying

So today (friday) just got home from work and there was a package waiting for me. I didnt recognize the name but when i opened it, there was my wallet! Apparently i dropped it outside the bank when i dropped off the daily deposit and some good soul found it on the ground and mailed it to me.

I am stunned, the area where the bank is located is NOT a good part of town, so that makes this twice as special.
As I said, faith in humanity restored and i thought i would share my good news.

Thanks r8shell  Just between you and me, I hate 'mushy peas'! Shhh...! ;) :D

Mine too! I was an adult before I realised that the phrases like 'home-cooking' and 'Just like mother makes' were supposed to be complimentary! :D

Glad you got your wallet back Ryan  I've returned a few lost wallets myself, most recently to a stage magician - I thought he'd be pleased to see his wallet reappear! :D

happy Yorkshire day, folks!

Thanks  :)

Great story Ryan.

It´s good to know that there still honest people out there. Not just grabbing a wallett, taking the money out and throwing the thing to garbage. And no matter what´s the whole deal with licences, passports etc etc....
Thanks for sharing these good news, my friend!

Oh and Happy Yorkshire Days to you guys in the UK.

Rather than derail the thread in which it resides, I thought I'd bring this here because Primble's words made me both smile and groan in recognition. I particularly like the bolded part. Well, that and the last line.

I would really appreciate it if you would come back to this thread and post a picture of the knife you bought and a short narrative of why you picked the knife you picked. That might give us all some insight as to what energy we bring to these types of threads, which get posted so often. I just wonder how often our advice is even taken? Maybe we need a sticky on the main page that states: If you ask for buying advice, you have to post a picture of what you bought. :D

:D

Nice to hear about your returned wallet Ryan, it's nice to hear about folks doing good deeds, especially when they are anonymous ones
such as this

agreed!
just completed my thank you letter in response to the letter they sent with the wallet. since we out of stamps here at the house, the wife is going to send it from work tomorrow.
felt it was the least i could do, writing a thank you letter for their good deed, you know.

The weather this summer has been absolutely fantastic. Some hot days, but nothing oppressive in the mid Atlantic. I just went on vacation down the shore and the lack of humidity and ocean breezes made the week. I spent a lot of time sampling which bars carried my hard cider, but I did get down to Chincoteague and Assateauge Island on the VA side. Beautiful time. Anyone gotten out in the wild blue yonder, or just at the local park, to enjoy this cooler than average summer? I'm thinking we're going to pay for it this winter, but hey, I'm enjoying it now.

This has indeed been a great summer so far. We've managed to be out in the canoe on the lake nearby, some scooter riding to some great BBQ joints, walks in the woods, and some time sitting in the shade reading some good books.

This summer has been tough family and friends wise. Lost my grandmother last month, my uncles father in law this weekend who we were all close to and now my great uncle in Ohio last night. He was a professor, an award winning taxidermist, won world prize and had his own polka band. Good guy too. Also lost a buddy earlier this spring. A shame to see so many gone already.

Sorry to hear this. Condolences to your family.

Sorry to hear that SRS, thoughts are with you and your family.

Fella's, recently I've been carrying some more traditionals again. Well, carrying from time to time on daytrips and mostly cooking with them at home. Especially with some Opinels and the Lierenaar.
I remembered the Aitor Castor I saw here a couple of times and I recalled I pretty much really needed one :D.
I was wondering though, which size do you guys have on your Castors? How do the different Castor sizes compare to say, an Opinel 6, 7, 8 or 9?
For the kitchen, I think I'd be good with a medium, but I might prefer a small for pocket carry? Not sure... So some input would be appreciated.

I find the small Aitor to be a very useful kitchen knife actually. The blade shaped leaf is an ideal shape for culinary tasks.

It's about 8.5cm closed here it is with a bubinga Opinel No.6 inox.

Thanks for the advice, willgoy and Jack. However, I do find the Opi 6 a bit small for kitchen work (blade's not long enough to single cut tomato slices of the bigger tomatoes in our greenhouse) so I might have to settle with the mediana... or get both:rolleyes:
