"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I picked up a couple of Spanish Joker knives the other week, one of which was for ScruffUK. He got in touch with me tonight to let me know the spring broke!

Here's a Before pic!

Be interesting to hear what the company have to say about it. Hope it's not a case of (and this is for Andi): And DO forget The Joker! ;) :D

Sorry to hear about the mishap with the broken spring - too bad it happened. But thanks for the laugh with the quote from Good Ol' Motörhead. :D The last time I was able to watch them in 2012 was just great. THESE guys are pure Rock'n'Roll!!! I hope I can see them frequently. But Mr. Kilmister is getting 70 next year and I doubt it will run too long.

Now I know that this question might be harder than deciding on what good ol traditional knife is going in your pocket in the morning, but I thought it might be fun for everyone (if you absolutely had to choose) to pick which of Carl's stories you like the best. Narrowing it down was almost impossible for me, but I realized that the one I've read the most was "Lizzy Rankin's Hammer Brand" It's just such a great story, it's got knives, a young impressionable 14 year old boy who was living the "modern Huck Finn daydream" and of course it had Lizzy Rankin, who we all know needs no explanation as to why she adds so much to the story. So what'll it be boys? Pick your poison.

So about Jackknife's stories...

This is a topic for the lounge. The main discussion forum is for the discussion of knives.

Yeah I wasn't to confident when I started the thread that it was the right place to do so. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, thank you for moving it for me, I'll know now for next time:thumbup:

Message for the folks out there who are patiently waiting for their resolza wishes to come true ;)
My "Sardinian Connection" file (where I keep your ideal knife's specs) is currently missing from my laptop in unclear circumstances...so even though my memory is quite good, please email me with the requirements for your knife.
Summer season is over, so (knife) hunting season is on :)
Thanks to everyone and sorry for the inconvenient :o

Hmm, passing strange, Fausto. None of your neighbors reported seeing a man in a rumpled white suit, brown Gucci loafers with no socks, and a two day stubble of beard hanging around? Had kind of a gravely voice from too much cigarettes and booze, calls people 'pal'. Usually accompanied by a young man answering to the name of Rico.
:D

I hate getting older. It means making choices that I may not really like to make. I don't like change, usually, and feel like a grouchy curmudgeon when I have to. Like arthritis. It was bad enough when I had to give up carrying my peanut, as I loved peanuts and small knives in general. Okay, so I'll carry a bigger easier to handle pocket knife.

But now I can't ride my old twist shift Vespa motorcooter anymore. I've had a love of these things going back to high school, Whe my high school girlfriend explored all over on a old beat up, dented up, faded white Vespa. Overseas, I put in time exploring where I was in a few strange places far from home. But now the arthritis has made selling my old PX150. A lot of miles over a lot of years, we've explored a lot of backroads.

But, in with the new. Two years ago, my better half Karen made this same trip with her red PX150, because of arthritis and wrist problems. She went modern, with a mint green Vespa GT200. Now it's my turn. I picked up a grab deal on leftover 2013 for 500 off, and now I' on a pearl white LX150. It's a nice scoot in a quiet efficient way. More powerful with it's 4 stroke fuel injected motor. Better handling with modern suspension and a central mounted motor. Tubless tires making it un-needed to carry a spare when you have sealer in the tires. No popping and small cloud of blue smoke on starting up in the morning. No kicking it over until it catches. No manual fuel valve to remember to shut off. No oil to mix with the gas. No high itch 2 stroke banshee sound when cranked out down some country road. All in all, kind of a civilized step up from the old school PX.

Oh well, I guess a quiet ride in the country is better than no ride at all. I just want to know who was the idiot who called these our golden years???

I just found out that I have Hyperthyroidism. Does anyone here have this?

My wife began having seizures out of the blue about 3 months ago. She's only had 3 total, but they've all been in the middle of the night. You can imagine what kind of anxiety that would bring to me, especially at bedtime. So I haven't been sleeping well, my heart has been racing, upset stomach, lost some weight. I thought it was all from anxiety but it just hasn't gone away, even though I don't feel particularly emotionally anxious. Anyway, went in to the Dr again yesterday because my heart was really pounding, heart is healthy so he took a blood sample to test my thyroid and it's high. I have an appointment with him next week to discuss and then tests at the hospital the week after that.

I'm pretty sad/upset that they found this but in one sense I am relieved to know that something has been causing me to feel this way and I'm not crazy! :)

Please keep us in your prayers.

Me too Carl, in spades! Good luck with the new steed my friend

Sorry to hear about the health problems you and the missus having Justin. My grandmother suffered with that condition and I had tests for it a few months back myself. They came back negative, but I know what you're saying there

I have hypothyroidism (underactive) and hyperparathyroidism (overactive) the first controlled with a thyroid hormone the second will be corrected with surgery if if gets out of the clinical stage.

They do an iodine uptake scan. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are much more common than people think, mostly unnoticed unless an astute Dr orders the blood tests.

Justin,
Sardinia is one of the areas of the whole planet where thyroid dysfunction is more common. I assume there is no one here who doesn't know at least one person who's had thyroid troubles and/or has undergone thyroidectomy. The good news is (as in many health troubles) that now you know what you're dealing with. First step towards an efficient treatment (and believe me - aside from my job) it's often the crucial step. Prayers and good wishes for you and your wife anyway.

Carl,
my grandpa (who will be 102 this December) used to ride 40 km on a bike on Sundays in the mid '20s just to spend an afternoon at the movies. Yet, when he entered the army and had the chance to do the same route with a motorized vehicle, he left the bike behind. Nothing wrong in updating your gear, as long as you keep your style ;)

Very cool. I think this belongs in the lounge though. Moving it there.

@ Flint Hills, My father has it, as did his father, so far my tests are good. Diagnosis can be a relief in cases like yours, you are now on the path to getting healthy again. Good wishes to you on your road back to wellness, and positive thoughts sent for your wife's condition as well...

Just though I share my latest find with you gents.

It's a Zephair pipe from 1947 that I paid 4 bucks for. Still need to clean and polish
