"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Forged nail to tamp a cob. When I reach for a pipe it'll most often be a Missouri Meerschaum Legend.

I've whittled the collection down to four briars. Two Randy Wileyes, a Nording, and a Savenelli basket pipe. I'm considering getting done to three.

Three???

That's barely enough for daily rotation!!! I can just get by with a even dozen, that they don't include my meerschaums.

I remember when I felt the same. Over the last three years I've given away many pipes. Some of which had never even smoked and some that were a bit pricey.

I hate breaking in briars, excepting oil cured. The tannins are just too nasty for me. That's likely why two of the four briars I decided to keep are oil cured Randy Wileys.

Yeah, I've given away some pipes here on this forum to a few members. But it's funny, I've given away pipes at a way lower rate than knives. When I decide I had too many knives, I did some good give aways. Pipes, not so much. All kidding siade, I'd like to get down to about the hard core half dozen of my very favorite old Petersons 300 series, and a few meerschaums.

Maybe time for some more give aways!

Speaking of GAW's...

I've noticed lately that the traditional forum has evolved into a quarter (at times) of the threads falling into the "GAW" or "thank you" category. I'm not complaining, they are useful in their own way but they do dilute the discussion of traditionals. Perhaps we need a sub-forum just for those.

Gary and I don't have a problem with Traditional give aways in the Traditional forum.

Some have suggested subforums for various Traditional topics in the past. Gary and I have discussed the idea. We are not in favor of it.

Gary and I get occasional complaints about forum content. Our normal answer is, "As long as no Traditional posting guideline is broken, Traditional Forum content is determined by the posters. Read and participate in the threads you like. Ignore the ones which do not interest you. "

Just so there is no confusion, I agree with Frank 100% on this.

My Cardinals won a doozy tonight! An eight run inning off Kershaw did the trick. What a comeback. :)

I think if there was a giveaway forum it'd become a magnet for 'ghost accounts'. I like to do giveaways because it's nice to give something back to the regulars of THIS forum. I generally avoid putting 'giveaway' in the thread title to try and filter out those doing a forum search on 'giveaway', something which the posting record of some of those entering the giveaways attests to.

I think this says it all frankly - no pun intended.

This is a good point. I did the same thing on my last giveaway, also asking people to do a bit more than a simple "I'm in" filters out the freeloaders.

We could always call them "gifawaes" :D

Seems like a good evening for sport - my Ulster lads smashed a struggling Edinburgh 30 - 0 last night, scooping a fourth try bonus point to keep them third place in the Guinness Pro Twelve league.

I'm a happy fellow this morning :)

Thanks again to you and Gary for running this place the way you do :)

Kershaw? You know that modern folders belong to another forum, do you? :D

I try to do the same. Which reminds me, I have a gifawae to start and need a title for it

Let me know when you let loose of a meerschaum. That's the one type I'd like to add

I'm in the "that's great" camp. It just shows the great generosity and graciousness of so many who post in the traditionals forum.

I think that is what makes this forum such a very special place. The brotherly spirit and generosity is one of a kind here. Having a dedicated giveaway section will just be a magnet for the free loaders looking for a handout. So many times I've looked at the posting history of the people responding tony give aways, and they have never set foot in the forum before except for a giveaway. I don't like vultures hovering about.

We need to keep things in the family.

Please don't take me the wrong way. Like I said above I'm not complaining, just expressing a thought. Been considering a GAW myself since I'm collecting too many unused knives.

I've noticed that give away threads which do not have "GAW" or "give away" in the title do not pick up as many outsiders. Every time someone posts in a thread, the title of that thread bumps up on the "current threads" page. If it is necessary to read the opening post in a GAW thread in order to see that it is a GAW thread, mostly only Traditional Forum regulars will read it and enter it.

I'm just commenting. It is not a recommendation.
