"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Barrett one year I carved and made both of my boy's cars. They looked very similar except different colors. The day of the big race came and Greg my oldest lost in the second heat. D.J. the youngest on the other hand won the entire competition. That set of a very "spirited" discussion that night. I can't hardly believe those guy's are 37 and 40 now. And I just turned 21 how did that happen. :D

Guess we know who got the "B" car. :D ;) They've turned the pinewood derby into a rote, organized assembly of prefabricated parts, essentially. It's good that you put some effort and uniqueness into the competition...even if you unconsciously expressed favoritism among your boys via your carving and fabrication. :p :D

Great pictures!

I'm on the right in the first photo, and that's my brother on the left. The camo hat I have on in these was an RA's hat; not sure what happened to that.

I love the jaunty angle at which you are wearing said hat, and hope your stylin' continues with whatever hat(s) remain in your possession. :)

Jolipapa if you don't mind what building is this and where is it located?
This is the house just in front of my home, I live at 6th floor (of 7). The new buildings left are located outside Paris, on the former Citroen St Ouen works near the Seine. When I was (much) younger it was on my way to work and there were hundreds of brand new 2cv waiting to be shipped to Le Havre for export by the river. Now it is an hotel.

Ha! Thanks, Sarah! I wear a hat pretty much every day. The angle might not be quite so jaunty these days, but I do still like to wear them cocked back on my head just a bit. I don't know about stylish, but it's more comfortable that way. :D

I don't have a recent picture of myself wearing a hat on hand, but here's one of my niece wearing my hat. (Looks better on her, anyways. :D)

Just checking in here :) I'm away from home for my long deserved holidays, but still come here daily, even though I'm not posting much.
Hopefully, I will soon post some pictures of my trip.
This time, I decided for the "SAK only" travelling knives set (a Climber, an alox Bantam, and a Classic).
Take care folks!

R Redden,

I got a kick out of your Snow/School closing pictures. Up here, we'd call that summer.

Great photos. I still can't for the life of me figure out why they closed school. I guess I'm just old and anxious to go to the Bahamas. From the looks of those pictures you might want to go with us. :D

I dont know why but Young Frankenstein....that's Fronkensteen! is an all time top 10 fave.I particularly like the end scene with Peter Boyle and Madeline Kahn.
'Honey,I put a hamper in the bedroom for socks and poopoo undies.'
And the look on his face. I'm crying with laughter even just thinking of it.Timeless.

Great movie my favorite scene is when the blind man lights the monsters finger instead of his cigar.:D

Snowed a little last night just a dusting nothing on the roads yet our school board in their wisdom chose to cancel school today. I have two granddaughters that have lived with my wife and I all of their lives, One is 15 the other 17 so they are home today. Now don't get me wrong I certainly enjoy their company but the problem lies in make up days for them tacked on to the end of the school year. My wife and I are trying to plan a trip for all of us to the Bahamas as soon as school is out. We want to spend a couple of weeks at Atlantis on Paradise Island. We've been there twice before and it's a great place that will be a a major vacation for us. If the school board don't stop canceling school for a few snow flakes we are never going to get to book this vacation. Sorry just venting my frustrations.

First my driveway and yes I still have Christmas lights hanging on my house.

Next is the side and back of my house and as you can see very little snow.

Next is up on my road and zero snow on the asphalt except around my granddaughters Trailblazer

And the other way on the road and again no snow on the road

I wonder sometimes too when I remember riding in a school bus and breaking trail in 8" of snow on the highway. Things are different now.... liabilities etc.

The board has to make their decision on closing school before it happens unlike when it happens when I was a kid. Live in a fairly variable terrain county and school closings are based on the worst 10% or the mountainous areas. The valleys may be snow free, but the mountains have snow covered roads.

I can't wait until my son is old enough to do some hiking and camping in the snow (he is 3). Looks like a great time.

I just moved up to SW Virginia (Big Stone Gap)...it's a bit nippy today for this South Carolina native.

Just a head's up.
I'm quickly approaching 1000 post and want to celebrate with a GAW to thank you all for putting up with my rambling and allowing me to feel a part of this wonderful place we call the porch. I have been planning this for awhile now and have come up with what I think is a fantastic prize. I want this to go to someone that contributes here on the traditional forum so I'm going to put some restrictions on it to insure that happens. This will also be open to our friends in other countries and if one of these folks win we will work out the shipping. I am going to invite the mods to participate because they do a great job for us all even though it's a thankless, unpaid job that is so necessary and most of the time we members act like they are second rate members and distance ourselves from them. This is going to happen towards the end of this month so keep your eye's open because it not only a great prize but a valuable one too.:)
