"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

...meanwhile, I just wanted to check in, say hi, and wish everyone the best. Although I haven't posted here lately, I never felt like moving one inch away from this community. We all know why.

Good to hear from you Fausto, my friend. I was wondering where you'd got to.

At your suggestion the last time we chatted, I resolved to post more and lurk less, here on The Porch.

I think I've put these up before, but here's a few photos of your beautiful birds-eye maple jack enjoying its new life down under.

In fact, it's in my pocket right now as I type this.

Enjoy your holidays and a bit of well earned relaxation.

Holidays are always too short...guess it's time to look forward to the next ones (whenever that might happen ).
Belgium is a beautiful country indeed :) you just need a Bantam to cut sandwiches and open beer bottles, and an Ambassador for opening chocolate packages ;)

Something like these, perhaps?

(They predate 1750 by a bit and are from another part of Europe, but these patterns may have still been around.)

Do you think the telescope came with the macaroni cutter ? Must of been some looooooong noodles being made back then. ;)

This weekend's adventure --- Cass, WV in the Allegheny Mountains. An old logging town in logging country.

A nickel squashed by a shay. Couldn't help myself.

Careful Leghog those train squash coins can be real hot ...err....ummmm. so I ve been told errmmmm ...by some kids who used to play up near the line.:)

Boy, if I had a nickel for every penny I put on the Nickel Plate Railroad track as a kid....

Well, I'd have a lot of nickels.

Looks like a nice trip, leghog.

Oh, so that's what the 'scringhe' is then? I had no idea. I thought it might have been the equivalent of one of those squeeze bag thingys with the nozzle on the end. Interesting.

Nice photos Leghog. I come from a big swathe of old logging country myself. Did you hit the antique and junk shops? You can find some real nice old tools in them. Haven't found any decent old pocket knives yet, but my last good find in an old timber town was this $14 antique Gransfors Bruks AB 4 1/2 pounder axe head. Before and after photos-

Ok, back to knife (and timbertown steam train) content.

When I was a kid Gary you could still buy a candy bar for a nickel so I didn't use them for much else but man I sure laid a lot of pennies on the old track.

Jack is that a Rubik’s Cube I see in the background?

Leghog I always enjoy the photo's of your and your wife's adventures. My favorites were the ones of the covered bridges.

Jack my friend you are certainly a man of diverse talents and taste's. :)

thanks randy, theres an easy pattern to solve them and they actually get repetitive, i believe after the 6x6x6, i only solved them once to prove the concept is the same.

Impressive collection!

When I was a kid we only had the 3x3. I was never good at solving it, but was quite adept at disassembling it and reassembling it in the solved configuration. ;)

I spent far more time with the Rubik's Snake. Anyone remember those?

i love that toy! my cousin gave it to us when I was a kid. it disappeared when i was around 7 or 8 sadly.

Kids are amazing. Whilst fetching a cuppa and a biscuit for my wife, my wee lad came running in (his X-ray ears detected the noise of the biscuit packet from two rooms, a corridor and a flight of stairs away) so that he could also benefit from the chocolate hobnobs on offer. For whatever reason, Rory decided the best way to persuade me to give him one was to sit on the floor and carefully remove his slippers and his socks. After receiving his snack he happily trotted off to join his mother - presumably so that he could attempt to steal her hobnob when she received it. I was lost for words so I took a picture.

What a great story to start the week.

We crossed paths with a train out of western Maryland being double headed by an old GE Electro-Motive Division BL2 and EMD GP9 with dynamic brakes.
