Great story! We sure have a lot in common! I just retired from 16 years credited service from being a military police officer and I sharpened everyones's knives as well. I hated it when someone would hand me a real super crapy knife with 420J steel or some poorly heat treated piece of junk or they would hand my a premium steel knife like 154CM but the edge was completely gone!! On the other hand the rare times I got a good one like the one you speak of I felt relief and it was I joy to take care of a good old knife! If they let me take it home I would lone them one of my lessor knives sharpen it up and clean it up as well. Sometimes the cleaning it up was worse then the sparpening! Guess where I'm originally from....

Well, I am looking forward to my vacation coming up Friday. Going to take a week with family in Ocean City MD (more affectionately referred to as Ocean Sh**ty by quite a few). What started out as a small getaway for fishermen in the 19th century has turned into a sprawling ten mile long metropolis on the Atlantic ocean. Family crab feast, fishing, poking around the old hardware stores looking for slipjoints. Too expensive to drink or eat out, but I do it a couple times with family and friends.

Every year I spend way too much on stupid crap, bad food and watered down draft cider. I think I am going to take the folksy approach. Go down to Chincoteague with a pack lunch and a fishing rod, mosey on over to Crisfield MD. Nothing beats sitting around on a cool summer night, playing cards, telling jokes and drinking on the front porch with friends and family.

You're a braver man that I, Dan!

We never go down there between Memorial Day and Labor day. Even better is to wait till early October, then it's a whole different atmosphere. Goes back to being the fishing place it was in the old days. Late September and early October is when Karen and I do our tent camping down on Assateague Island. It's much less crowded, and the bay side is still calm enough to explore by canoe. Crabbing on the bay side is great, very shallow water, easy to get aound by small boat.

When it's chilly enough to need a jacket, O.C. is a different place.

I think there's still a good all you can eat crab place up the road around 120th street or so. Huggins, Hutchens, something like that. We ate there last year, and it was good.

Carl.

I've been down there in the off season, April when I was 18 scouting for a job down there; and about ten years ago when I went for a powwow in October. I've been down in the offseason a couple times since. Like you said, much different town. I think the only word is enjoyable :o.

I'll be excited as a kid on Christmas when I go down, and grumpier than a bear by the time I come back.

Funny! Great story. Billy reminds me of a Security guard we used to have here at work. His name was William Clinton, seriously... He was retired military, and wasn't fit to work with the public. He was rude, crude, and absolutely hilarious. Had a fun time sharing my newest knife purchases with him, and shooting the bull.

I haven't laughed like that in a while, thanks! Billy reminds me of several people I served with in the Army. Great people, hearts of gold (to a fault), with mouths not fit for society at large! :D Some of the best people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Billy sounds just like them...

Thanks!

I just had to chime in also. That story made me laugh my ASS off!! I can so relate to that. I've been a cop for 33 years and due to retire in about 60 days!! I'm one of the dinosaurs where I work and am currently on the day shift Detective Bureau. Great story, I could picture every word. Thanks for the laughs and keep them coming.

Had a good day at the lake. Took my trusty old fishing knife and my girls. We had a blast.

Only stayed 2 hours. It was chilly and the girls needed dinner. Caught a nice bass. Had a lot of fun throwing rocks. ;)

Hi,

You're going to ruin those girls taking them fishin' like that. You know what it did to you.:D

I have 4 girls, and the saddest part is when they get old enough to have some young gentleman take them from you. But the Grandchildren are a big pay off.

And what temperature is it there that you need to dress like January? It's 88F here with a heat index of 108F! This ain't normal for Minnesota.

Yeah, I gotta get as many fishing trips in while I can. :)

I'm in the Bay Area. It was a warm day, but at this turn in the lake when the sun goes down and the wind kicks up (like a mule), it gets real cold, real fast.
