"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks for the cool story! Things like this is what makes this sub-forum special. I have been carrying a Chestnut Bone Peanut for 6 days, since I received it in the mail. So far, I absolutely love the thing.

Thanks guys, I really do enjoy the Peanut, I just don't know why I fell off the wagon.
I'm hoping to somewhat get back to my early knife carrying, the peanut is so easy, so why not.

TSG, I have a feeling that the knife that calls the table home for the time being, is a chestnut CV.
I mentioned how much I liked the chestnut to her, so I don't know... I'm excited. I'll be happy with anything, I love the yellow too.

Here's a picture I took a while ago.
I had a little fun with it, I'll have to get a "real" picture of it for you guys.

Awesome story my friend! My wife bought me my first Peanut 3 months ago and it has not left my pocket. It's Case Damascus with stag and I love it to death.

Grim, I would too.
I've been reading Jackknife's tales on his Damascus Nut, and I think I may have to add one to my pocket soon.

How have you been liking yours?
From what I understand it feels a little different when your cutting something with the Damascus steel VS, SS/CV.
I think it could be fun.

That was a great read Johnny. It leaves me with the feeling that maybe the youth of America, at least some of them and for sure you, are growing up with the values and traditions of our fathers and grandfathers. Thanks for taking the time to post.

What I would like to do, if somebody can help me with more technical know how than I have, is to make a little video that can be here on the traditional forum. Maybe a sticky in the part where you have my past stories. I'd like to show how, in the best Mr. Van way traditional way, to just hold a stone in one hand, and a knife in the other, and just sharpen the thing. No gizmos, gadgets or whatnots.

If anyone in the Washington D.C./Baltimore/central Maryland/eastern West Va area has a video camera, I'd drive to meet you and film a simple knife sharpening.

Maybe that helpful soul could take a pic or two of your dad's fabled peanut. That would be awesome.

That's great Ash!

I was laid off for a time back in 1997, and I know how it can be a bit scary and daunting. I hope all goes well for you.

Carl.

It has been a bit rough. I'm so thankful to be going back to work. All the sharp toys I had to sell to live maybe I can get a couple of them back. :D

Ash,
Congrats on the new job! Being out of work can be even more stressful than work itself. Glad to hear that you are getting back on your feet.

Carl,
Great idea!

SD, I miss that nut.
I've had the opportunity to replace it with a look alike many times, but I can't do it. I'll definitely add more peanuts to my collection, but not like that first one.

Peregrin, thank you very much.
I owe all of the respect I get to my parents, and the way I've been raised. I've had many role models in my life to keep me on the right path, and they have never let me stray. I love traditions, and I realize now that the reason I love traditions, is because I have so many of them. If a peanut becomes a tradition, welcome to the pack my little friend.

Thanks guys

Ash, Congratulations on the new job! There are too many good people suffering too much in this economy.

Thanks johnny twoshoes for sharing that with us. That's an awesome story. Heck between you and jackknife I'm going to have to buy a peanut. :)

Great read Johnny. It's obvious that writing is another of your passions, and I must say, you're quite good at it.

I enjoyed that story. That brown delrin has an attraction that I can't explain. That harvest orange peanut is mighty pretty though. Maybe for your birthday you'll get a chestnut bone CV; we can always hope. - Ed J

I've been wanting a peanut ever since I started reading Carl's posts. And now this! GREAT story.

There's no point in putting it off any longer.

Thank you all for the kind words, if I can support the interest of a peanut purchase like Carl... maybe I have a chance.

Ed, I have a very strong feeling that my new nut will be Yellow... which sounds great.
Now ya see, my grandmother is bound to honesty by her christian beliefs, so when I hinted around as to what the nut could be, she practically spilled her guts.

It's a rainy day here on the farm, so no real work to be done, I'm just taking it easy with my little buddy. Yesterday I touched the edge up, and now I think we could do surgery, it's amazing to me how sharp those little blades get, so much work can be done for such a small companion. It's been in my hand almost as much as it's been in my pocket, it feels great. Case's shallow jigging, and extra finishing makes for a smooth, and trusted feel.

With a nice hot tea, a good book, and a peanut to keep me company, I'm set for the day.

Carl, great idea, wish I could help, but I can't right now. A crappy cellphone camera just won't do :o. Ash, congratulations!
