"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks Elliott and Andy (I'm so excited about the forum knife!!!) :D

I fly home on the 18th so I have A LOT to get done in just over a week, sending boxes off by end of the week and hopefully my job just sends me home (I have to give 1 weeks notice, but a lot of business' will pay you out instead of making you work notice period). My wife is pretty darn excited!!! :D

Good on ya! I keep getting odd thoughts of being you being in Kansas and saying, "We're not is OZ anymore, Toto!"

Welcome home. Hope the next year is a honeymoon for you and the wife to make up for the last apart.

Thanks for this thread.

Every once in a while Carl, and others mention an idea, book, knife or other subject
that I had not thought of before, or that I had forgotten.

I have personally followed up on many of these references. My experience has been
educational, pleasurable, and occasionally revelatory.

Carl's reference to Spencer (page 94) and the subsequent references to Matt Helm
and Travis McGee prompted me to buy the first Travis and Helm novels. My wife and I had forgotten how good the writing was.

Thanks, Carl.

Oh Yeah!!
Puttin' on the Ritz!!
Peanuts.

Robert B, I hope you like Kansas.

Mike H.

Thanks guys :) I like KS enough but want to settle down in Idaho (mountains, trees, the whole shebang)...at least its not California! I had some bad experiences in Cali lol.

Well, sir, I have to jump in here and take credit for the McGee recommendation! :p I've been a fan for years. You can't beat John D. MacDonald with a stick! I'm re-reading "A Deadly Shade of Gold" right now. And I have Matt Helm on my list.

I'm sorta, kinda retired I guess. At least from full-time year round work. I work an agriculture related job for a month or two in the spring and fall; long hours and at least six, if not seven days a week. Yada, yada. Anyway, finished up last Saturday (good to be retired again) and went nuts ordering knives this past week.

Today I received three of the knives. One bought at a popular auction site, one from a dealer, and one from a fellow BF member. A Case Small Coke Bottle, a GEC Powderhorn, and a Case Eisenhower. All three came with decent edges, no blade wobble, centered in the liners (or in the case of the Eisenhower, blades not rubbing the liners or each other). All three have great snap but aren't nail breakers. It just don't get much better than that!

That's not all. I just rec'd notification that the Kerry Hampton pass-around knife is on the way to me. I bought a Queen/Dan Burke Small Barlow from a fellow forum member that should be here next week. And the 2011 Blade Forum knife will be coming soon!

Anyway, since the locals might look askance at me if I mentioned the above (you bought how many knives?), I thought I'd share my my joy with people who'd understand. :D

Wow I was just given a cuban cigar from an aussie Vet back from Afghanistan...I wanted to bring it back to the US to smoke, then realized they're illegal :(

That's one of the many things I appreciate about BF. People relate to your love of knives. That sounds like a knice assortment. Enjoy!

My wife's typical reaction when I showed her a new knife was, "It looks like every other one you have."

I stopped showing them to her.

Good idea, you are on to something. I am proud of my knifes and enjoy collecting and using them. When I get a box in the mail all I hear is “you got another knife”. I see wonders and much different from the last one and all the family sees is “It looks just like the last one”. I may stop showing then to those under the same roof.

Last night when I was typing my post my wife asked what I was doing. I told her. She commented that she was glad I had friends on my knife site so she wouldn't have to hear all about the knives I get. She used to just shake her head and roll her eyes when I'd come back from the mailbox with a package. Yesterday I came back with three knife packages and she didn't bat an eye. Works for me! ;)

However, this morning she commented that I didn't show her any of the knives I received yesterday ... go figure . So I pull out the GEC Ebony Powderhorn and show her. I explain a little of what I like about it ..... nice dark, dark ebony with hardly any brown streaks running through it; how the knife fits my hand like a glove with the nice curve on the tail providing a good firm grip for my little finger, etc. She admired it for a while and thought it was a pretty cool knife - nice curves to it and actually a pretty sensual knife! Again, works for me.

Fire that bad boy up, Robert. You can buy very good Cigars in the U.S. but you probably already know that.

A had my first taste of a real Cuban cigar about a year ago. I had 5 of them to be exact, all different brands.

Whenever you get around to smoking that one, I would be interested in knowing how you liked it.

Yeah I will be, last night I'm here I'll be sparking her up...I normally smoke pipes but have had Dutch cigars a bit that were sent over by family in Europe, so it'll be nice to try something a little "taboo" in the cigar world. :D

I show some off, most of the time I get, why do you need that. Never ever tell anyone who isn't a knife nut how much it cost.

Just take off the wrapper. Whenever I get back to the States, I ..... :foot: uhh, well, you see, I met a guy once who told me the he often brings Cuban cigars to friends in the U.S. He says that, once you take off the wrapper, no one can tell.

At the same time, he doesn't really believe in letting a good cigar sit around. Best to just smoke it ASAP with a good cup of coffee, and/or Scotch.
