Carothers and Guns

You guys…thanks. :)

Very nice! I have the full rail version that was also tuned by the custom shop.

Thanks! Mine is a full rail, just hidden a bit, but it was performance tuned and de-MIM'd by Rob at Benchmark Precision. When I was in Ohio he was about 30 minutes from me. He's one of the earliest custom 1911 builders going back to the early 90's, and a good guy too. The one in the pistol rack on the right behind the TRP is a full custom from him, a Bobtail Commander 9mm conversion built on a Springfield NM series frame. He did all the work on the Dan Wesson Valor next to it as well.

Man, I wanted a railed TRP Operator, but just couldn't get past the adjustable sights. (*I have NO IDEA why...just an OCD thing)

As I posted, I'm an "old school" 1911 guy and have owned or shot just about ALL of the old school stuff...Colt, Springfield, Wilson, Baer, etc. And, with that, the modern 5" railed 1911 that found its way into my heart is the DW "Specialist"...

*In terms of fit/finish/function, I'd put this thing ^^^ up against the FINEST I've ever handled.

I was in LE about a million years ago... (*for about 15 years, with 10 of those as a "Detective")

Here's the Bill Wilson-massaged "Commander" that served as my C.I.D. sidearm... (*I restored it about ten years ago)

*Like I posted, I've been carrying some form of a 1911 since Christ was a Corporal.

Dude, didn't you just say you were 52? Man I am 51.. you ain't that old! :)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but rails aren't old school & neither are beaver tail grip safeties, now that you popped that cherry grab something with adjustable sights, it'll make your God aged eyes happy :D I have always liked having a Commander in my stable with adjustable sights so I can play around with different loads, use it for competitive matches, long range shooting challenges and dial it in for what I am shooting. They're very versatile but not a carry piece and not a go to war pistol IMO... but not every gun needs to be.

Man, maybe it ain't the "age". Maybe it's the "mileage".

No, rails and beaver tails aren't necessarily old school. But, I'll tell you what, I was playing when guys like Wilson, Heinie, Ed Brown, and a couple others were the only players in the game. I'm also old enough to remember when L.A.P.D. "Metro" (*S.W.A.T.) were the only guys with weapons lights on their 1911s. I trained with Clint Smith when he lived in Texas. (*Hell, I still remember when Bill Wilson was competing, and "Ayoob" and "Colonel Cooper" were "names")

When I graduated the Academy, we were still carrying 66s/686s/681s. With the exception of the 681, the other two had adjustable sights...and were strong as an ox.

One of these days, I may get over my "adjustable sight"(ed) 1911 prejudice. However, for now, I think I'll just stick with my fixed sighted/railed "Specialist", "MC Operator", and Colt "Rail Gun". 🤷‍♂️
