Carothers Performance Knives, Use & Abuse. Take 2

I'm really torn about this one, I'm on the fence.

We are going back into production of the field knives because, despite having made about a thousand of them we have exhausted our inventory and have no shelf stock, which was not the plan.

If I was going to do a Fat Bastard Field Knife, This would be the time to do it.

But it's terrible timing doing a pre-order at the end of the year because it's unlikely I'll get the material in time for tax purposes. And it is, honestly, not a very good knife unless you're planning on needing to beat the shit out of it. The BFK is already far more durable than the average person needs, and it will outperform the Fat Bastard in every other way.

Someone talk me into this. The knife is objectively stupid, but that can be fun and sometimes we buy things that don't really make a lot of sense, just because we like it.

Look at this cool 45 Magnum!

I shot a squirrel with it this weekend.

(I am waging an unholy jihad on the squirrels. I have my reasons)

I won't post pictures of the outcome....
It sounds like you may not need much convincing. But, the tax implications may not be ideal for this year, but it should work itself out next year when you pay for the materials but don’t gain any additional income. And this is America damn it, it’s not about need, it’s about wanting the most awesome, and wanting it now. Let’s be realistic, you can sell as many as you can make, so why not.

Magnacut DEK1 always by my side. Moldy wall repair, had fun using the knife.

Do it!!!

It’s pretty simple, really;

- You’re operating a business.

- You’re one of the rare few in THIS business, who takes what customers want into consideration. It’s not like this would be the first overbuilt version specifically for the Neanderthals who like to break shit. That honor already went to the HDMC, so there’s precedent.

- I’ve mentioned before, but you could engrave your signature on leftover 3V scrap and sell them as custom paperweights, and they’d probably sell well 😂, but a super tough knife that gets props from some potentially not quite stable YouTube personality who likes to break shit? Yeah, that will sell.

- if it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to try to do it this year, then schedule it for next year.

And in the meantime, I'll still enjoy my overbuilt DEK2. 😁

The DEK2 was merely the more robust version in the DEK lineup, the 1 being the middle, the 2 being the stout, and the 3 = the svelte.

The HDMC and FBFK are literally established CPK designs that were overbuilt specifically to withstand ridiculous abuse, despite CPKs and D3V already being able to withstand substantial abuse that regular knives wouldn’t.

FWIW, I’m not one of the forumites who would be on the FBFK pre-order. I preordered the HDMC, and when I received it and checked it out, I got to see what Nathan had already explained; it wasn’t an improvement over the standard MC (which is still my favorite CPK). It was simply an overbuilt version, made to withstand just about any ridiculous abuse some knucklehead might subject it to, so I passed mine on to someone else.

I have both an FK3, and a hollow grind Cruwear BFK, and those fit my preferences better, but there are undoubtedly quite a few people who would love the chance to own the FBFK, so it makes sense to make them.

You're 100% correct, but the DEK2 is one of the few CPK that does come with Nathan's rough use warranty.

...There is also a DEK2, which is a very heavy-duty variation for those of you who want to try (and fail) to break something...

...The DEK2 is only available in Delta 3V. It comes with our rough use warranty. If it ever fails (in any way, for any reason short of intentionally breaking it) I will replace, repair or refund. You cannot break this knife (without big tools). Try to break this knife. I'm taking it down to a somewhat thin edge, so you might pick up some edge damage by cutting though a bolt, car, nail, bridge etc but if you can damage it, I will repair it. If you want a small knife that can handle anything you can possibly dish out, this is it. This knife has a combination of durability, cutting performance and edge retention you cannot find anywhere else...

I'd rather see a skinny bastard field knife
I don’t think there were very many of the hollow grind Cruwear BFKs ordered/made, but it’s the closest thing to what you might be looking for, aside from the Thinner-Harder FK2 (which are also pretty rare, but I think it was Matty/Casinostocks who pointed out that the preorders for the hollow grind Cruwear BFKs put them in the category of one of the rarest production CPKs, not counting some of the even rarer one-offs, like the Bowies and the custom grind Mark specials).

If I'm going to do it I need to do it now because it needs to be added to the end of the field knife run. We are just not getting back into production of field times again.

The setup on these runs is substantial, I don't want to tear down just to set it back up again.

I don’t know if it makes sense to me, but I want one anyways 🤣
