I think it's going to be exciting no matter what!!!

-We will get to armchair quarterback the event.
-The results will confirm what we agree with, or not....haha
-We will get to "people watch" the regular players Here....all of us will have our unique opinions.

*I'm sure most of us "designed the perfect blade" to survive Joe....at the very least in our heads....
And Some, for real.

All data points are good data points

I'm looking forward to it, Thank You.

I watch both, as both have useful data. The 90 deg bend of the K20 was very impressive in Nathan's videos.

The antics in the former's work is just performance art. I find it funny and quite heartwarming because it pushes the free speech envelope in certain ways and I admire when people do that, even if it's not what I would say or do. I 100% acknowledge that many people find it incredibly distasteful. Maybe takes one (me) to know one😂.

Yeah, I did.

Probably will take some time, because these tests happen in batches, but should happen this year I believe.

Okay, another edit (since this is mod-view only at this point):

Guys, please bear with me here. I read through the entire 26 page thread on the other sub-forum and can see there is quite a contentious relationship btw this forum and Joe, without needing to take a side. Lots of hate, in fact. And on both sides. It's something that I sort of picked up on, but had no idea how deep it ran. I can imagine it stemming from (as per that 26-pg thread) some of the personal insults from videos that were either edited or removed - and I never saw them.

No joke - I came into all this thinking it could be just a heck of a fun time, seeing a Carothers finally tested (as was suggested by some very posters in this thread in the long 26 pager) knowing that it would probably do great. It would be interesting, something to talk about, etc. I haven't yet seen a destructive testing matchup w/ Carothers yet against other 'hard use' type blades, and something instructive might be gleaned from it. And unbeknownst to me at the time of sending it, people had been asking for it. The first responses I got were surprising in a pleasant way - Nathan responded, you responded, ppl were joking around, everyone seemed cool and a real good sport, because I'm not stupid, I know that Joe's videos can be polarizing. Anyway, got a great vibe. But it changed!

And I know that I've only got something like 20+ posts, not an everyday regular, but BladeForums has always been good to me. I'm not a troll. I'm a Carothers owner. I was so excited when I got a spot in the Friday sale for the BFK. Good times. I suppose I just wanted to say my motive should be clear. I carry this knife every day I'm in the field. I'm an HVAC technician. I don't buy knives to collect and look at. I use them, and hard because that's what the job demands. Which is why I bought a Carothers. Which is also why the Joe X testing doesn't bother me. I want to see it destroyed to know how far it can be pushed first. I want to see how tough it is. That's it. And maybe others do too. Maybe not! That's fine too. I'm always willing to maintain a high standard of conversation, and I would like this conversation carried forward, respectfully of course, but not at the expense of it being scrubbed clean of it's original intent: Joe X is going to destroy a Carothers knife, and we are all going to see how long it lasts. I'm confident, and thought that was the energy I'd get here too, sort of that 'oh hell yeah, here we go, do your worst!' kinda thing. Even if you don't like him, you at least can have faith in the knives themselves 😄 I just thought it could be something fun we could talk about, and I'm going to challenge you to think about it from this point of view but if the history runs too deep, it is what it is. If all this remains unacceptable to the moderation team, I would much prefer you just kill it versus editing it into something I did not intend, because that just seems dishonest. It would suck, but 'Respect the Mods' is the 1st rule. Your house = your rules. Thanks guys
I'd imagine most CPK fans are interested in seeing the video. I know I am.

I don't think anyone here will display any ill will or dislike towards you for sending a knife to Joe X or for opening this thread.

The CPK group is a pretty level headed group of accepting and open people......except for tanto.

That guy will steal your shoes and the fillings in your teeth while you're asleep. Remember kids, crack kills.

We have no personal issue with you, nor whatever you may choose to do with the knives you own.

What we don't want is a debacle resulting from having sent the knife to an individual to test who has caused a good deal of ill will and pot stirring, who is not a paying member and, (therefore), whose work we are not going to promote nor advertise...(especially as regards any sort of grandstanding).

Speaking for myself, I have had no interactions with the person, (to the best of my knowledge), on any level, nor have I ever watched any of his videos, or read any of his reviews (if he has written any). I am simply acting from the perspective of doing what is best for these forums and its members, and that will be the basis for any future actions, should any be required.

If a video is produced which in all other respects meets the standards, (culture, language, behavior etc), of the forums, it will stand as long as it doesn't devolve into a food fight centering on the individual afterward.

Discussion of the knife and how it held up to the methods and manner of testing, and whether the testing itself was valid, would certainly be within bounds.

Anything else remains to be seen.

Morning guys. I haven’t read all the posts here yet, but I’m super glad to see it up and running and want to thank the crew, especially Blues Blues for cautiously assuming the best. I can’t begin to imagine all the crap that they and others have to sort through to keep things from turning into a drama fest. Absolutely not my intention. My only plan here is to keep things positive and respectful towards the mods and all the members. If anyone sees anything out of line from me, I expect to be called out on it.

And on that note, the BFK is at it again this morning, helping with these panels on a different unit. An even more daunting setup on this unit with the ladder. Glad to have a trusted friend with me here.

And here is the daily carry for me on most jobs, with the CPK leading the pack…

Joe X does not ‘test’ knives- he pushes the knives (and himself) until the knife breaks. The astounding thing in his videos is how much abuse some knives can handle. I know that the CPK knives I like will handle much more than anything I will ever ask of them, and never fail me.

The CPK ‘knife’ I would like to see Joe X attempt to destroy is the Firemans tool, as it is the only one specifically designed to do some of what he does while ‘testing’.

I admit I bought a folder simply to check out the lock after watching him abuse the knife.

Regardless of what torture the knife endures, I know that Joe will be impressed, and his video will cause even more hectic Friday sales. 🤪

Oh yeah! We should send him an HDMC or a fireman's tool. Or even just an SDFK.

You can break a field knife if you put your mind to it. And use tools.

I wish this testing was more sophisticated in order to demonstrate the enhanced edge stability and edge durability. The gross toughness of 3V is largely baked in, anybody's 3V knife is going to be difficult to break.

I think the Fireman's tool is the winner for his "Test", sharepened prybar for the win.

Your picture is lacking... bourbon. Where's the bourbon, Red?

Don't know who the person referenced is, or what kind of testing he does, but has anyone advised him NOT to use powered belt sharpeners to touch up the edge on a CPK?

I recall that being one of the first things that stuck out to me, in the EU video.

I think I did that once *whoops*

What is the preferred sharpener / system that folks are using? I'm due for a new system. I have water stones, but admittedly not the best with them.

Nathan has mentioned previously that the powered belt systems that aren’t water cooled, easily overheat the tiny amount of material at the very apex of the edge, enough to mess up the D3V heat treat.

At CPK, they use a water cooled setup, run slow enough to read the print on the belts.

For home use (if you’re not particularly comfortable with hand sharpening), I have to say, the Work Sharp Precision Adjust Pro has been impressive for a comparably less expensive guided sharpening system (comparably because it retails for ~$250, but Wicked Edge, TSPROF and various other options are in the $5xx to $8xx range).

If you’re comfortable with hand sharpening though, the DMT Diafold Duo Fine/Coarse is my favorite option. Lightweight, compact, and works on anything with an edge, from knives, machetes, axes to swords.

Hmmm...maybe I did that. I haven't really noticed anything with it, but this is really good to know. I assume that maybe after a few sharpenings, you move past the point of a messed up heat treat in case this happened? Funny thing is I don't even own of those sharpeners, but I was somewhere where there was one, I needed to touch up the, and wham bam it was done. Glad to know now at least! Thank you for that.
