Carpenter Park Hike IV (Extremely Photo Heavy)

Hey Warrior.......

The very first thing I do when entering the North Woods is harvest a pocket full of paper Birch bark...... It is kinda like having a wee squirt bottle of #2 Diesel that will not spill....... A little gentle frotting gives a great spark nest ...... Larger stuff very rarely fails to catch..... It is the pitch wood of the north....... It is everywhere north of the Great Lakes and east of the Mississippi that I have hunted, backpacked or hiked...... A wonderful resource......

Shoot, I meant to ask you if the river birch just smoldered, but asked you about the paper birch. By the way, I had to look up the word, "frotting", as I've never heard of it before. The Urban Dictionary says it's, "Rubbing one's crotch against unexpecting people, furniture or walls. A favourite of sex-starved Japanese businessmen on the sub-way." I hope I don't have to rub my crotch up against the paper birch for a good burn, haha. :D Wikipedia says, "slang for frottage; ult. from the French verb frotter, "to rub". Then goes on to explain the sexual part of it again.

That's a very familiar shelter house. We've got a number of them here locally like that. Great pix as always sir! It looks like you're getting a bit more organized with your gear as well.

Still a great photographer and gourmet trail chef! It's always fun looking at your picture posts Warrior.

kool pics as usual man, I enjoyed the non average hiking meal

Thanks. Hard to think of new ideas for trail food.

Gonna hit the park again tomorrow. Supposed to be a sunny 70°. Rained all day today though, so will probably be muddy. Don't worry, gonna take the ESEE gear tomorrow, haha. Won't have to bore you with yet another Carpenter Park thread. :D

Dude, if I could snap pictures like that I'd call myself a photographer...
Absolutely gorgeous, it's almost as pretty here in SW Ohio...
It's so cool that your wife enjoys playing Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer along with ya. :)
All in all, excellent thread. Your photo heavy threads are food for the little knife guy in my head. :)

Thanks man. I love taking the photos. I think I took over 250 that trip. They don't all turn out good, so you have to take a bunch. My wife was raised to be outdoorsy. Her dad, and old WWII veteran, was leader of the Boy Scouts, and would take the kids on hiking adventures, canoeing, etc. She spent her entire early years in Vermont, for the summers, and so forth. She loves the outdoors nearly as much as I do.

BTW, I used to be what I considered an armchair bushcrafter. I would read other peoples threads, and really enjoyed it. Decided one day that I wanted it for myself. Carpenter Park is only a half hour away from me, and doesn't cost but gas, and a little food. Well worth it. If I lived near the woods, I would have a thread per day, haha. Sometimes, I want to do hikes without taking photos, but I just can't make myself do it. It's a lot easier to fix a meal and what not without taking photos of every step, but still, I enjoy it.
