Here is a question for ya'll. If were going to carry one knife with you for most of the day which one wouyld it be? I am looking for specifics here.

To all you users in MA: What do you think about the carry/import laws. (i.e. doesn't it suck that you have to have a fiearms licence to buy pepper spray?)

Nothing says love quite like a sharp knife... Now if my wife only believed that.

Matt, I'd love to have a daily carry khukuri with me, but given the paranoia this would arouse here in Canada, I'd stick to carrying my large plain Chris Reeve Sebenza or my Swiss Army Knife. I likely will add the Umfaan I have on order as an alternate daily carry once I get it.

Matt, If i could i would carry a kukri that hung down to the top of my knee(and that's a long way down there) But of course that has no place in city. I agree that nothing quite sets the sceen as a large knife strapped to ones leg. The law is very tricky about blades. Where i live a "non-conceled" folder must have a blade length of under 4". That's why i carry a folder that is 3.9" Even then if the law want's to they can confiscate it if the officer has it in for knife users. It's a tough call. Just don't get caught.

Here in Bahstan Most boysout knives are illegal to carry.

There is one exception... If you are on your way to or from work. I carry a folding punch dagger and a lineman's knife. Both of these are single edge and short blades.

I grew up on a farm, a knife of some kind is just part of my routine.

Carry laws are out of control everywhere -- except maybe here in Nevada. I'm glad I won't live to see it but I predict that the day will come when the only thing we can carry will be a plastic card that does everything -- except shoot and cut.

The carry laws everywhere fluctuate so much! I carry the 20" Sirupati that my wife gave me for Christmas in a large back pack. No one questions a back pack. Even though I'm a L.E. officer, my fellow brothers think carrying a large knife is very odd. Out of sight out of mind. Over seas I usually carry a folding knife and an ASP baton. This is enough for self defense. They are concealable and I never had problems in customs yet. For some reason, I still need to carry an edge weapon. I carry a Spyderco Endura (for utility use) and a Cold Steel Extra large Voyager (5" blade for defense).

Uncle Bill, in the People Republic of Kalifornia getting a concealed carry permit is very difficult. Some choose to carry a firearm illegally, while other choose other methods. Some of my friends don't like firearms, so they carry a can of OC (pepper spray) and a good legal folding knife. They also have some knowledge of the Filipino MA systems. Carrying these two items, you have a distance weapon (max range of the spray is 10ft) and if the attacker wishes to get closer and continue the attack he will be slightly disabled by the spray and the knife comes into play. A couple of cuts around the bicep/tricep region, and the back side of the knee should give you an edge. Some people I know would go for the kill (friends in Sulu, Philippines), but here in the U.S. things are different, but if needed these other techniques could be used.

Uncle,
As far as I know, stun guns are O.K. if your 21 and over, but I tried several contact version and wasn't to impressed. They hurt, but you have to hold it on the bad guy for 3 to 7 seconds for it too work! The police tazer gun is cool because it shoots darts, but I have seen some felons pull the darts off before the officer could pump the juice in. There is one version marketed towards the civilians, it is called the air tazer. This device uses CO2 to propel the darts, and upon contact the juice gets pumped in automatically. You can also use it in a contact stun mode also. If you are interested I can get one for you. I think they run in the $200 region.

I agree with you BA fir the most part the stun guns are rather inefective. Have you seen some of the newer pepper sprays. They foam and expand. Thus making it more likely that the perp will get some in thier eyes, mouth well... almost everything. Great stuff.

There was a review on stun guns in the old tactical forums. The conclusion was that they are not effective. I can't remember the tester's name. He was in contact with it for the recommended time.

As for Tasers, the one that shoots darts, think Rodney King. On the other hand multiple baton blows did not seem to fraze Mr. King much. Perhaps, the back of a khukuri would have worked better.

I studied Aidido many years ago in a more pure form than is offered today. The motto was: the man who never fights always wins.

This stuck with me and has saved me in many situations. I've had to say I was sorry when I had no need to do so but as I look back I'm glad that I did. I had nothing to prove then and I have nothing to prove now -- except to myself.

My little punch dagger will work okay if I use the lame duck technique if it comes to that. Otherwise, I'll just not fight -- and win.

Pay attention, kids. Here is good advice from one who has been there, done that, and been around the block more than once.

Khukuri FAQ

Hey Uncle Bill,

I'm not surprised to hear you say that you studied Aikido! I studied it for about 2 years (stopped when I moved to Hawaii) and plan on studying when I get back to Maine. The reason I'm not surprised, is that your attitude towards life and your outlook on it, (at least what I gather from online comments) seems very similiar to my old sensei's --who I regarded as one of the greatest men I'd ever met. Where did you study and with whom, if you don't mind my asking? Also, you have new email!!

Rob

I studied in San Diego in the 60's and I had a Japanese Sensei whose name I am ashamed to admit I have forgotten. He could run faster backward than I could forward in the short haul.

And, Rob, you are not the only one who picked up on my Aikido attitude.

Forgive my ignorance of smaller bladeware,but...just what is a punch dagger?
Would you get one at a hardware store, or
on the internet?

I appreciate the aikido attitude too BTW.

And oh yeah -- the WWII arrived today at the post office but I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet. Looking forward to tomorrow morning...

Uncle,
I studied Aikido too! I studied this style right after the Army. This was my way of therapy so I could adjust to the normal world. I also studied Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing), Wing Chun and Serrada style escrima. Sill learning new stuff each day. I had to stop my Muay Thai training, too much damage to my right knee already.

I am actually looking for a new MA that will not trash my knee. It is already slated for surgery. I was actaully looking at tai chi. Opinions anyone? Espescially the New England folks.
