In the near future I plan on taking a trip somewhere to go backpacking. I was wondering if all I have is my pack that I'm bringing onto the plane, how can I also bring my knife with me?

Do any of you have any experience with this? I understand that if you bring a knife, it has to be checked in and cannot be a carry-on. Do they make any type of exceptions or is there a method I can get the knife (or knives) checked in?

Shipping it to the hotel is the easiest, just make sure the package is very secure and doesn't "look" like there is a knife inside.

not in this climate. you'll never get a knife on a plane via carry on.

yep ship to the hotel. good advice. or just buy a mora or whatever appeases you needs while you are there, and have it shipped back to your home when you leave.

Maybe you could check online if there is any stores selling knives where you are going...
I always buy me a new knife when I travel, my answer to the Commanders(wife) buying of small nicnacks as memories, LOL...
Can`t beat the feeling of new steel, can you....

I knew you would, you would`nt be in here if you did`nt like the thought of more knives, LOL

Just check your bag, it's the simplest way. Most airlines will let you check a carry on bag for no charge.

Depending on where you're going, like foreign travel, buying a new knife in the local style is a requirement. :)

Yeah, depends on if you will be leaving the country, if you stay in the US it shouldn't really be a problem. I have flow from Tucson to N California many times, switching planes in La or Salt Lake City. I've never had a problem with knives in my checked bag, I always take at least 2 or 3 with me. Once I had a smaller bag in my suitcase full of 20 or so knives and with sharpening equipment and nothing happened. They don't care about knives really, they do open bags to check for things like explosives and other perceived threats, so there is always a risk of theft.

Theft is what I'm afraid of. I've heard horror stories of people getting their knives stolen when they get their luggage checked in. If I had a choice, I NEVER check in my luggage when I travel.

On the other hand, I always check my luggage and have never had one of my pocket knives stolen. I usually stash them in a balled up sock.
