Carry to rock concert?

I recommend: Don't carry anything. Even if you feel naked, it's really not worth the risk. If you're worried about a fight, get a pair of steel toed boots - should handle almost anything you run in to.

Of course, even here in Utah, I've known people who've been stabbed at concerts. Having a knife wouldn't have helped them though, in a crowded area where you can't even see who stabbed you in the back.

I worked "security" at a concert once. At big concerts, most the security is hired the day of the show, and it pays something like $10+ an hour. I lucked out and wasn't placed at the entrance to frisk people. My job was basically to act like I knew what I was doing, and to look at people's tickets to make sure they weren't trying to change into a better section. If I got into any trouble, I was supposed to go get the real security guards.

I think it depends on the size of the concert - at the one I worked, they had metal detectors, but only used them occassionally. At smaller venue's, they may use them more often.

The reason I suggest is not carrying is simple: what good is it going to do you? The real security guards at the concert were HUGE and very tough. I watched them cart off dozens of people. Personally, I'd prefer not to get my @ss kicked over a SAK. I can imagine their response over a spydie endura or other bigger knife.

Also, how are you going to draw a knife hidden in your underwear? You'd be better off using the time to get lost in the crowd. If you feel threatened, you can always go to security, or even to one of the many LEO's both on and off duty at most major events. Keep a couple good knives in your car, but don't bother carrying into the concert. Stay away from area's where there are no witnesses, and stay mostly sober and aware, and you'll be fine. You'll probably have a better time if you don't have to worry about being arrested, too.

JSP V-Gar in the stat pouch. I've attached it to a key ring, a camera, and my cell phone as a "wrist strap". Even if someone sees it, odds are that they have no idea what they're looking at.

Playing "beat the frisk" loses some of it's charm when you're dealing with numerous large bouncers.

Lansky "the knife" non-mag in your wallet pocket. Costs about $3 or so. Serrated "edge" and nice point. I have no idea where to get it.

Also, AG Russell CIA letter opener. Costs $6 plus a buck or two shipping. Totla non-mag, and you can carry either in a sock.

I did the Allman concert a few years back. My brother said the friends of the pretty blond dancing with me carted her off after the official "only two dances with the cute guy you met over the seatback/ weirdo" rule was initiated. Good kisser tho, I think...

No frisk that I recall.

How about one of those Ceramic Frequent Flier neck knives or a Ti/Talonite neck knife?

I've never been to any really big concerts, but lots of smaller ones and have never been stopped or checked by security. Every single time I've had at least a multi tool on my belt with my shirt tucked in, and probably had a delica clipped in my back pocket also.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I had a lot of fun with this thread. I never got so many replies before. These forums make me feel part of a great, large fraternity, very welcome.

My primary need was for utility more than self defense, for reasons stated above. I also was limiting my choices to what I own currently. I have narrowed it down to my Richartz mini sak type with brushed aluminum handles, little rubber dots for grip, and several small blades, mostly nail file, screw driver, scissors, etc. I may risk it, but will get a receipt if they take it. But they have to find it. Otherwise I'll leave it in the van. btw I am going with 11 other guys (all good friends) in a van. My wifes 40th bday gift to me. Let's see , for the money I could have had 2 nice customs or 6 production folders. Oh well.

A knife is by default a tool, it's only a weapon when a human chooses to make it so.
