Carrying a folder vs a multi tool

Hi. I generally carry both :) . My multi/tool of choice is, since years, a SOG Power Assist (in a special edition manufactured by FOX for the Italian Army). Pliers are really good and the rest of the tools are just fine for my daily uses . The saw always sees some action on hiking trails, screwdrivers come in handy on production lines, warehouses or other work related tasks, bottle opener it’s good to have when removing crown caps from drinks, etc. Just yesterday evening, I did a quick fix to my little son’s scooter which had a minor break-down at the park :).

Folder is a folder :). Sees a lot of use for preparing my breakfasts and lunches in the office canteen and cuts random stuff during the day. Honestly I’d say like this: for my uses I could do 90% of the things with my multi-tool besides the food preparation for which it is really a bit unpractical. But the joy from a folder is unique ;).

My set-up for this week:

Take care!

SOG multitool + Spyderco, can't go wrong with that combo

What does your SOG has as special add-on for you Army guys?

Thanks!

Hi!

@ ThePeacent: Thanks! I was almost sure you would have liked this couple :D ! About my SOG, really I don’t think it has anything special when it comes to tools (I mean no different or extra tools compared to a Power Assist standard production), besides, maybe, the crimpers/wire-strippers. It just was sold to me (several years ago now) as a limited run (in terms of pieces) produced by FOX and supposedly made in Italy, sporting the Italian Army logo. For me really more a want than a necessity :). (I’m not in the Army since my compulsory military service time, more than two decades ago now. Good Ol’ Days, anyway! :)).

Ciao!

The multi tool is a miss for me in most situations. For daily carry, I don't find myself missing one. The weight is too much for most and I never feel I get a good fit with any of the tools. I seem to strip more screws with a multi tool than it's worth. Maybe it's just I've used the wrong multi tools.

For the car, a small tool kit with dedicated tools is easy to fit and makes a multi tool less than ideal. At home, a tool box seems to do a better job than a multi tool. Maybe if I had small multi tool type jobs that need done around the house all day it would be more efficient than grabbing the tool box, but I don't so again a set of regular pliers/screw drivers/cutters is more appropriate for the job. At work, well it's an office type setting and they have a small tool box. If I went places where I couldn't get to tools and it may be critical to have them (say camping/hiking/or some other out in the middle of no where activity) and weight/size of a tool kit was too much, then the multi tool seems like a good compromise. Outside of that its just a bit of a miss for me. We did always toss one in the small tool kit/hold for motorcycles when I had them. Again, that was a case where size was a key issue and the multi tool fit perfect.

Hello Everyone.

I am a new member here and this is my first post . . .so please be gentle.

My everyday carry piece is a Leatherman Wave. It rides in the OEM nylon belt pouch horizontally behind my right hip. Carried this way it is both "in plain sight" and unobtrusive.

I like I because the cutting tools may be deployed without opening the tool, they lock and they are about as large a I am comfortable with.

In years past, I sometimes carried a knofe or tool and sometimes not. After 9/11 in 2001 I heard the survival story about the window washer trapped in an elevator with three or four "suits" Among the five of them he was the only one with any type of tool . . .his squeegee. He stripped off the rubber whiper and they all took turns gouging a hole in the wall till they could get out . . .before the second tower collapsed.

In the days after that, there was a lot of talk about what "the New Normal" would be for everyone. My adjustment was to get a new multitool and TO WEAR IT EVERYWHERE EVERY DAY.

Actually your 3rd post and you have been here for 9 years, but hey. :D

In addition to a SAK, I also always have a Leatherman with me. A Blast. Dont think they even make that one anymore.

Couldn't have said it better. For me a waste of money, and weight I don't need. I have at least 100 knives (I've lost count). Only multi tool I ever bought was a LM Squirt for my daughter's keychain.

There is nothing like having the right tool or the job at hand.

Of course there is nothing worse than having nothing in your hand when faced with a job to be done.

It is really a case of whatever works best for each individual. In my case, I made a conscious choice , adter 9/11 in 2001, to carry a multi-tool as an edc item along with my wallrt, keys and cell phone. Both Gerber and Leatherman tools have been tried at one time or another. In my place in life today, if a household job requires more capability than my current Leatherman Wave, we usually out-source the job to a professional.

But again; that is what works for me. Some prefer one or another model of "Swiss Army Knife" for EDC I used to but switched after 9/11.

The new Knifeless Rebar would be fantastic... if only it didn't still have a full-size saw blade. Again, these are all the ones I know of--if anyone knows of any others, please let me know.

A year later, I finally picked one up, and after a month of carrying it, I've reversed my position.

If you look at it differently, and don't aim to take it on a plane, removing the blades makes it a lot more compact and easily pocketable. Then you can pair it with whatever dedicated blade you plan to carry that day.

Napthrix, hope you find it handy in your life. I carry a Leatherman Ps4 Squirt in my pocket all the time. It proved more handy than I ever would have expected. Seldom carry a full size multi-tool, but I keep one stashed in my field bag in my vehicle so I have access to it on jobs and so forth if I need it. But generally speaking, the Squirt is all I need. I have carried a SAK for 30 years as my primary EDC knife. Other knives are secondary to it in terms of use.

I find a small pair of pliers that open up large enough to grab a 1/2" nut or slightly larger to be very handy at times. Frankly, it is used more often than the large multi-tools.

Honestly most multis I find too thick and heavy to want to carry. I have a little keychain SAK and a dedicated EDC knife. I prefer that configuration as it is lighter and more portable. Sometimes I carry my LM Squirt though as it is small enough to not be a nuissance in the pocket.

I sometimes upgrade to a larger SAK but like to get thin models without too many layers. What really pisses me off is how much I want an Alox SAK. However they don't come with the most quintessential tools ever to appear on a SAK, tweezers and toothpick.

Wtf VictoriNOT!?

I always carry a knife and a multi-tool is always in my car. I might carry some select multi-tools but usually they are hefty and/or bulky making them less desirable to be carried.

I keep a Pioneer X or a Farmer (both alox) in another pocket, and a Surge in my day bag, but I really am liking this Rebar for EDC, and while visiting Texas I'll be carrying my EK&T Companion and a large folder.
