Carrying an izula while running.

An Izula with a Spyderco g-clip is pretty awesome for running. You can clip the g-clip on a pair of running shorts or pants with no belt and it stays put pretty good. It is usually actually rather hard to get off the shorts or pants so I am never really worried about losing it.

Yup. G-clip works well for clipping to waist band. I've run with the spyderco perrin street beat this way. Izula is lighter and flatter and should carry even better. I've only run with my Izula in a jacket pocket though.

Why carry a knife when running ? You might need to cut something ;) (doh!)

An Izula, carried as a neck knife, is a great running setup assuming you have clothing that will prevent it from swinging around :)

As for the questions as for the "need" of a knife when running.

1. This is bladeforums, I take a knife into the shower! (H1 is amazing stuff)
2. It's not a question of need, but a question of being preparedness.
3. And when do you need a reason to carry a knife?

Why do I carry a knife while running?

I never know when I'm going to start walking.

Serious answer:
There is multiple reasons, when I go running for a couple of miles I never know what I'm going to come up on or what is coming to come up on me. Kimberholic did a great job of explaining some possible scenarios . Another more overlooked reason is CPR, I hope I never have to do CPR on someone (or visa versa) but one important step is removing anything covering the chest so when you are doing compressions your hand doesn't slip, in which case a knife would be pretty handy. Also it is in some part a mental thing, when I work after school I usually don't get off until 7-8 pm, and when I'm running at night I like knowing I have a knife on me.

So would most of you carry it as a neck knife, or just put it into your sweatpants? I would imagine the latter being more comfortable..

When you are living in Australia

Anyway, what type of animals would one be hoping to defend oneself against with such a small blade as the Izula..?! I mean, if one really needed to defend oneself against animals, wouldn't one need a gun or a club or a much larger knife at least?

If I was being attacked by something, I would rather have an Izula than nothing.

Give me an example of "something" that you would need to defend yourself against please.

Why carry a knife while walking? Why carry a knife while Hiking? Why carry a knife while Biking? Why carry a knife at all?

Because I carry one everywhere. Just because, Just in case. Doesnt matter in case of what.

I agree. The Izula is a great knife to Jog with. I find a neck knife does well while Jogging and Biking.

I usually carry whatever lightest folding knife I own clipped IWB. Right now its my kershaw blackout. I'll have to try and carry a fixed blade.

I'm not debating the "need" or preference for carrying a blade while jogging, hiking or what have you. I'm asking why one would bring an Izula for the purpose of jogging.

First I questioned the rather large size of the Izula for jogging, if all you need is a blade in case of emergencies or whatever. It's not like you need to build a shelter or stop to carve a totem pole when you're out jogging.

Secondly, I find it truly intriguing and I'm eager to hear what type of animal one would imagine fending off with an Izula, when a blade would be necessary or even just a luxury while doing so.

never said you were.

just awnsering my own questions......

Izulas pretty light., quick to present when the need arises, and I just like it, thats why I carry it...

As far as animals, well I guess if thats what I had, and had to use it, Id use the HELL out of it. Im guessin were talkin feral dogs....

Plus the Izulas size isnt that big.....ALOT of folders are heavier. I dont own any lightweight folders....Well actually all I own is a couple SAKs....Untill the RAT folder comes out.

stoffi,

The large size of the Izula is a pro for running, it doesn't bounce around as much, and it is lighter than some folders I own. When it comes to animals, I'm pretty confident a stick in the ribs would deter most vicious animals, but of course that would be among the last resorts. Unfortunately most "vicious" animals are peoples pets, I don't know how many times I have had dogs nipping at my heels, early today is was a danged poodle.

By stick in the ribs I was talking about inserting said knife into the side of the animal, if a stab in the ribs doesn't discourage the animal then there's a good chance I wouldn't walk away from the situation, and at least I attempted to defend myself, better than not having the knife on me.

There was a story not too long ago of a bow hunter who was walking down a trail, all of a sudden a bear charged him (I believe the report said Grizzly) the man did not have enough time to raise his bow and the bear took him to the ground. The hunter managed to reach into his quiver and pull out an arrow, he then proceeded to stab the arrow into the bear's throat. The bear ran off and the hunter lived to hunt another day.

Also I would like to clear something up, I DON'T want this thread to turn into a pissing match. I DON'T carry the izula just for protection from animals. I started this thread not to stir up arguments but for it to be informative. If you don't feel running with a knife is a good idea that that is okay with me. I'm not questioning your judgement, and I would appreciate it if you don't question mine. I am not sore, butthurt, or upset, I am just trying to stop the direction this thread is headed. If it continues down hill with arguments then I will lock this thread and let it die.

whenever i run i always just clip a folder onto the hem of my pants. works fine for me. no lost knives yet(make sure to have a good clip though)

+1, if you have ANY doubt's about the clips retention I probably wouldn't risk it if you run hard.

I guess it depends where you are jogging.

As an example, below is an excerpt of a report of a cougar attack on Vancouver Island from a few years back. See http://www.igorilla.com/gorilla/animal/2002/cougar_attack_vancouver.html for the full report. Unlikely? Sure, but I bet Mr. Parker was pretty happy he had his little knife with him.

A 61-year-old man won a life-and-death struggle with a cougar outside a small northern Vancouver Island village, killing the animal with his 7.5-centimetre pocket knife.

Dave Parker was jumped from behind while walking on an industrial road two kilometres south of Port Alice, a village of 1,300 about 370 kilometres north of Victoria. [...] Parker was being mauled but managed to get to his folding pocket knife. [...] RCMP Const. Jeff Flindall said police found Parker's knife next to the carcass of the dead cougar. "It is a pocket knife and it is approximately three inches long," Flindall said from Port Alice.
