I have been carrying a small bottle with oil in it for years. This is actually a breath mint bottle. I bought several of them and cleaned them well and use them for oil. 3 in 1 mostly. It’s very handy to give a drop to the hinges of my knife, or as lube for my whetstone if I’m away from the house. Of course I find a million other uses for it too.

My wife says I’m unusual, that most folks don’t carry oil with them. My buddy carried a bottle of hand sanitizer with him everywhere.... I never felt the need there.

I certainly think it’s old timey to carry a bottle of oil. It pairs real well with a traditional knife.

Anyone else carry oil?

I don't routinely carry oil, but this small bottle of high grade mineral oil lives in the small care and sharpening kit that I take away camping with me. I do find 100% alcohol hand gel very useful, it's handy to use when you're out in the outdoors, after answering a call of nature, it's a useful fire starter, and it comes in handy for a couple of things relating to my slingshot rubbers. Alcohol camera lens wipes have multiple uses too

Carry a small bottle of oil everywhere? Of course. Along with bit of twine, lighter, flint and steel, a pocket wife (small sewing kit), small basic drug free first aid kit, a few knives, an multi tool, pear of 6" adjustable wrenches, bit driver and bit set, a couple pens, paper/small notebook, anti skeeters bug spray, after bite ... doesn't everyone? 😳

If I'm heading out for an overnight trip away from home and I have a carbon steel folding knife with me, I'll take my small bottle of Victorinox oil.
armed with that and a small pocket stone, I'm prepared to care for my knife with relatively little inconvenience.

I tried that for awhile but just never needed it so I stopped.
I bought a 5 pack of those tiny little dropper bottles online for cheap, much easier than having to buy the breath drops and cleaning it out.

I use mineral oil BTW, because my knives are often used for food.

I don't know how odd it may be to carry a small bottle of oil. it certainly seems that many members here on BF, based on comments in other threads, carry multiple folding knives. because you never know when you need a second knife. If it is true that members carry back-up knives then carrying a small bottle of lubrication to go along with a sharpening stone for those emergency sharpening and lubrication situations seem reasonable.

Check out mister one-knife! Must be nice!
Tomorrow I'm going to carry three and a bottle of oil to work, just to help pick up the slack around here.

Having to oil the joint midday? I have never seen the need.
never dropped your carbon steel knife in a puddle, gone for that accidental swim with it in your pocket or get food liquids in the joint?

Most of the time I'm close enough to a remedy that it's not a concern, but if I'm in the woods or on vacation I try to make sure I have something at hand to protect my knife in the short term.

I wash and dry off my knife the best I can, and then oil it at the end of the day.

I would be worried about a leak. I have never needed to oil a knife in the middle of the day, but I do oil the joints every once in a while at home. If you like doing that though, go for it! You should find an old brass oiler or something though to match the look of an old pocket knife :D lol

I carry my knife, phone, wallet, and keys... I lead a simple life. 😁

Never. Never even crossed my mind until this. Been in the knife game for 50plus years. Still won’t. 😉
John 😁
These pretty much sum up my feelings on the subject.
I do regularly put a drop or two of mineral oil on the pivots of my slipjoints. Always at home though.

Never even heard of that. I keep oil at home (and at work)--wouldn't think of carrying it. Don't need it that often.

Not me man, I just forget the knife is in my pocket and run it through the wash. They come out nice and clean that way. Plus I nearly always find them after they're in the dryer for a few seconds. Give it a try, you might like it. And carry oil? Nope.
