Carrying oil for your knife.

I can't imagine carrying anything that would require that level of pampering. Knives are pretty durable things.

There was a time when I had to deal with a half dozen padlocks every day that were out in the weather. If I needed a couple of drops of oil for a lock I'd just get it from the dipstick of my vehicle. I guess if I was desperate to oil my knife I'd probably do the same.

Don't forget your comb and handkerchief, John.
Comb is a recent thing for me, after a gap of about 30 years! :D Bandana, lighter, knife or knives, pry-tool/bottle-opener, pen, phone, reading specs, keys (with a small flashlight on my key-chain). Unless my knife falls in a puddle or something, it gets a drop of oil about every couple of months

My pickup and the machines I use daily operate at high rates of speed for extended periods, so I keep oil on hand for them. My knives do not operate at high rates of speed for extended periods, therefore I do not keep oil on hand for them.

That being said, should one of my knives need oil while on a job, I could just use a dab of 15w40 on the joints... So I suppose one could say I do keep knife oil nearby.

The reason I started carrying oil was for work, oiling air tools. It’s a whole lot quicker to whip the bottle out than to chase down the bottle that someone forgot to put back. But i started using it for my knives and my gun and everything else, instead of going for my can in the house. It’s turned out quite handy.

I never oil my knives, never really had an issue.

That's unwise.

I'm gonna take the advice of the guy with 8888 posts!! 😲:cool::cool:🤓

I carry more than one knife, and many of them have more than one blade, so I can't imagine needing to sharpen a knife while away from home. My lifestyle rarely requires a knife away from home for any intense/frequent cutting tasks. Besides that, I never use oil as a lubricant for sharpening anyway.

I already carry WAY too much stuff in my pockets (billfold,1xAAA flashlight, tiny pliers-based multitool, 7 keys, 9 knives, 3 handkerchiefs, coin pouch, 2 masks (cloth and K95), a couple of little wooden whittling projects, 48" of shoelace to practice tying knots, flip phone, 4" adjustable wrench, 5" channel lock pliers) and couldn't justify adding a little bottle of oil.

(I don't even want to think about what all might be in the 10-12 pound backpack I almost always carry to and from work.)

I don't think I ever saw my Dad oil his pocket knife when I was a kid, so I never oiled my scout knife. Of course, he always sharpened his knife on the same electric grinding wheel he used to sharpen everything, while I tried to sharpen my scout knife, during lulls in milking cows, on a whetstone we kept down in the barn.

The closest I ever got to carrying a bottle of oil was back when I shot and carried 1911s a lot. I always had an eye drop bottle of clp around, but never carried it. I say If it comes in handy for you, that's great!

Seldom am I in a situation that would require oiling the joint of my knife. No need for oil as I have chapstick in my pocket. If need be i would pull the dip stick from the car, only if absolutely needed to.

I reckon my wife wasn’t far off the mark. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I keep a can of G96 Gun Treatment in my car and another in my truck - I keep them so I can spray a coat of oil on or in a wet firearm if I've been hunting in the rain. The cans serve other purposes as well when needed - I have oiled a knife joint for a friend before using my gun oil. OH

I don’t carry oil, but have several little bottles in the house and garage so it is easy to reach when I need it.

I like the idea for travelling...Ive got one of those small shaving oil bottles thats nearly empty..It will do.
Cheers
Careful Jon, I oiled my clippers with shaving oil, (as opposed to razor oil), and it gummed them up really badly 😳👍
