carrying on college campus

It was brought up yesterday about carrying knives on college campus. I carry 2 knives (one in my pocket and a larger blade in my bag) and was curious as to what the rules actually say about. In my search on the college website I found 2 things:

1. It's against the rules to carry a gun, knive or "club"
2. There's a list of registered sex offenders that either work, attend or volunteer at the campus.

NICE!

So they seriously want us to rely on the old man security guards riding segways to keep us safe? Right.

CSU FTW! I usually carry one or two of my folders. As long as I comply with state law, I'm fine. Also, we can carry concealed if we have a CCW. I've talked to a few officers on campus who saw me with two blades, when they asked me why and I explained that they have different purposes, and that I work in a knifes store they were cool with it. I might carry my small Takach fixed blade, but I won't carry anything along the lines of an RC-6 on campus. MAYBE a RC-3 though...

I know in North Carolina it is illegal to carry any type of "weapon" on education property, which includes college and university campuses. And weapons include any pointed or sharp-edged object, excepting school supplies. Fortunately, I live in a part of the state where knife carry is practically expected of every male - I'd estimate at about half of my male students have a knife in their pockets. We just have to be sublte about how we use them on campus.

It was against the rules where I went, too.

I carried anyway. Of course one of the things I carried was a Buck 110. I carried it in its sheath on my belt.
That's one of the few blades that is so ubiquitous that I could get away with making anyone who called it a weapon look like a total fool.

What they really needed to worry about was the 6D cell MagLite I carried in my duffle. Or, the other thing I carried. ;)

They also say no drugs or alcohol on campus
College rules were meant to be broken.:p:D

Have no fears. I was never one to conform to the rules anyway. I just think its stupid.

I pocket a bark river mikro canadian and have an rc3 in my bag.

This shit is insane. Rules at my college are no guns allowed and follow the "state laws" on everything else. I carry my D2 Para or Persistence because lord knows I wouldnt want to get caught with my Military or Police3 (most likely would considered a concealed weapon).

Last semester I left class and as soon as I get to work my friend says "What the hell happened on campus? there are alerts all over the place". I had no idea what was going on so I called some people who I knew were still there. Turns out a guy got all pissy about something and flashed a gun at someone. This happened about 5 mins after I left and it happened about 50 yards from where I was walking!!!!

Campus police did such a great job of alerting everyone that there were still people in class while the "guy with the gun" was running around campus. One of my friends had a person run by his classes window, stop, started banging on the window, and yelling "guy with a gun! guy with a gun!" so they all left.

Here's the part that KILLS me. The next day in class our Prof made us talk about "what happened". When it was all said and done he says "If this every happens again we will lock the door and wait for police". He didnt like my reply...

I said...

"You think I'm going to sit here and die!??!?!?! Do you see that one whole side of the room we are in is glass windows???? I will be getting my ass up, running to my truck, and getting out of here!!!"

He told me that I would not be leaving if it happened.

The discussion ended with me saying "You can try to stop me form leaving, but I WILL make it out that door. I'll take my chances running".

Campus security strikes a real nerve with me. I mean we have a whole 8 cops for 18,000 students!!!!

Haha, seriously. :p

Well, on my campus we actually have a proficient police department. They have a K-9 unit and a number of former State Troopers. They are all armed and can bring down some pain (which I've seen personally).

Funny thing is that our University Police are far more proficient and professional than the City Police. It's a shame, really because the crime that goes unchecked off campus finds its way on campus from time to time.

Yeah, that professor is a moron. My campus had a bad incident several years ago. A kid held an entire lecture center hostage with a .22 rifle, I think. He believed that the CIA had planted a chip in his *wherethesundon'tshine*. SWAT teams were called up but because of the retarded design of the lecture centers, meant to notify professors whenever a student would open a door, they had trouble planning how to enter quickly. Eventually, 2 students bum-rushed the psycho and one, tragically, got shot down there. Both were history majors, btw - w00t!

Ruger LCP w/crimson trace. It will fit in a front or back pocket pocket, small bag or purse. My wife is a full time college student, and doesnt leave home without a way to protect herself. I (being a LEO) understand why the laws are in place, but I will not allow myself or my family to be helpless victims.... if you want us, your gonna have to work for it.

I just carry my regular folder on campus. No need for a fixed blade, so i coldnt really explain myself having one other than I like it:P. Never have had any problems personally

The rules don't trump my need to be able to defend my life.

The whole VA Tech massacre thing wouldn't have gone so well for the other guy if he picked my classroom while I was in college.
Anyone who's seen these school shootings and still thinks that students should sit like fish in a barrel deserves what they get.

This is a very hard situation for me to take sides on.

Being a LEO you should ENFORCE the law and not encourage others to be lawbreaker's. I can only assume its illegal for her to carry since you said "I (being a LEO) understand why the laws are in place, but I will not allow myself or my family to be helpless victims". I wouldnt be saying that on the internet if I were you.

On the other hand I would give almost anything to be able to carry my G23, P2000, or S&W 442 to class. I'm not going to risk being caught and becoming a felon though...

As gay as I think the are I have also been looking at those stupid "tactical pens".

I go to a small sixth form collage in the uk, which is attached to a secondary school (which I used to attend).
while the school has a stated policy on "weapons" (DO NOT bring knives into school) the collage doesn't, and so (as far as I can tell) the standard local laws apply. which means I can carry a non-locking, sub-3inch blade penknife.
I chose to carry a swisscard in my wallet (technicaly illegal, but generaly considered an exception to the rule by police) and have had no issue at all, even when the blade somehow worked loose, dropped on the floor, and was handed into the principle by annother student. I didn't even realise the blade was missing untill the other student told me. went to the principle, she handed it back without a problem.

Amen brother.
Let the others sit in a shooting gallery if that's what they wish.

i work at a univiserty and i carry a blade on me at all times.. just dont whip it out unless you have to. i use mine to cut open boxes and etc and no one has ever said anything. you just have to watch out for the lefties who like to disarm the good guys and arm the bad guys

I usually carry a folder in my pocket and a fixed blade in my pack on campus, but it has absolutely zero do to with any delusions of using either to defend myself. I carry them because they are useful tools, and I would rather use my Spyderco to cut up boxes or trim large materials in lab than one of those stupid little razor blade holders with disposable blades.

lol! i just got my military in yesterday and i plan on having all 9.5 inches of it in my pocket come time for my 1 oclock class! :D

I think a lot could be accomplished regarding some of these stupid rules and laws if we referred to our normal, EDC knives as tools and not weapons. Granted, they can be used as weapons, but so can a good number of otherwise innocuous items. Imagine what kind of damage could be done to someone's skull if they were whacked with a laptop computer, yet, as far as I know, it's perfectly acceptable to carry them freely on any school campus.

We have a very effective campus police force at UMaine. Our rules are a little more open, though. You can't have any guns or "other weapons" on campus. All of my knives are for general utility or wilderness/survival purposes, and I can easily pull up the advertising blurbs on my laptop if anyone gave me trouble for it. So far, though, I've simply been discreet about my EDC's and haven't had any trouble. :)

My college states any blade under 3 inches is fine, so I always have a smaller spyderco on me! and if we did have rules..I'd still carry:yawn:
