The SAK and Scout style patterns could be the knives that got me here in the first place, though it was another Case that led me here. For years, all I carried was a SwissChamp in a belt pouch because it was so darn handy, especially at work (computer maintenance). When I saw our Troop committee chair sharpening up his old Camillus Scout at camp one year I was curious, so I went looking for them.
In addition to the SwissChamp, I've gotten a Huntsman (BSA/Wood Badge branded), Manager (BSA) and a Wenger SI. I also have traditional Scouts from Camillus, Case, Boker, Weidmansheil, Rough Rider, Colonel Coon, and Schatt & Morgan. Also have one of the Bear repro Remington's. Both my sons have BSA branded SAKs, and even my wife has a BSA Sentry and a World Scout branded Wenger Evo. We've all been in Scouting since my oldest son, now 19, started in Cubs and my wife volunteered to be a den leader and volunteered me too. Somehow I ended up as a Scoutmaster along the way and have a great group of kids, though very few actually carry some kind of Scout pattern.
I've tried to build interest in the traditional style knife, even gave Rough Riders as Christmas presents, and another to a boy who had no knife. Duane also supplied some knives including a SAK for guys in my Troop. For the most part though, my Scouts carry some time of locking folder, either a small Buck style lockback or a modern one hander. Slipjoints are viewed as old-fashioned, though an Opinel made a stir last year at our Christmas party. I'll keep trying, I have another RR for the Christmas grab bag this year.
Of all my SAKs, the only ones that go to work now are the Manager (Classic size) and Wenger SI. The others are a little too bulky for dress pants carry, and a belt pouch would raise a lot of eyebrows so they wait for weekends and camping trips.
