Carvings

I have a question for you seasoned carvers. I just trimmed up my...what I belive Honey locust tree in the back yard and want to carve a spoon for my wife from it.
Here is a picture of a small cross grain cutting I made with my Silky Gomboy. Notice the cracks that appeared in it after drying on counter overnight.
My question is do the cracks occur when carving a spoon with the grain? And if so is there a way to prevent it?
Thanks

"Just trimmed" explains the problem. In a campsite where one was making a spoon to get through a weekend, using green, just cut wood would be no issue. Making something you hope to last however, is a problem. Wood needs to be "dry," before being used in this way. "Dry" in this case is a relative term and is a condition that needs to be, based on the surrounding relative humidity. There's a great book "Understanding Wood" by Bruce Hoadley, http://www.tauntonstore.com/underst...-070490.html?gclid=CPqGjfmezcsCFZSGfgod8-wEcQ. That explains all this stuff. Its the Bible.

My first attempt at carving. Something got lost in translation from to YouTube video to the wood. So I strategically placed my EDK that I used.

Here is a video for a great tutorial on how to carve a bear character for those who are interested. This particular channel is one I enjoy and follow.
Thanks for posting this schmittie, looks like a great project to try next time I go on an outing.

Bumping this great thread! Let's see some more carvings :)

Here is a spoon I just finished with my Scandiman. I absolutely love this knife.

Here's some old and new projects I've resurrected now that I built a proper bench to fill up with clutter. My mystery wood Kuksa and a Maple spoon. It's been a relatively expensive project, mostly because I had to buy a Tormek T8 to sharpen the Pheil spoon gouge.

Here you can see my tool arsenal. The hook knife is key, but it's a bear to keep sharp.

Getting a real wood vise also helped tremendously. I used IKEA cork pot trivets (broken in half) as pads which seems to work pretty well.

Nice projects I love your bench and I need a setup like that, especially the vise.

I completely agree on the Mora hook knives, I've got a love/hate relationship with mine. I think I'm finally to the point to start looking into a decent upgrade.
