What is this? Is it bone that's supposed to look like stag? I've seen some pics on the bay and can't decide if I like it or not. I don't remember seeing any pics posted here on BF, or any discussion, so I'm guessing it's not too popular. Any info, or your impressions would be appreciated! Thanks!

It is bone that looks like stag. Not bad stuff. Bone and stag are closely related anyway.

I have a seahorse whittler in 6.5 bone stag, and it looks nice. One thing I like about it is the thickness. Or rather the lack of thickness. The bone doesn't stick out past the bolsters like some stag handles do, so it rides a little thinner in the pocket.

It's not in large-scale production right now. So discussion of it is no sign of its popularity or lack thereof. Yes, it's bone jigged and burned to look like stag, and not all of it is thin, and not all real stag is thick, either.

I can remember a few times that members posted pics of their 6.5's.
As much as I tried, I just couldn't force myself to like it. All the ones I have seen had nice looking scale on one side and the other side usually didn't look very nice. JMHO

I've got a Trapper and a Barlow in 6.5 and they look real nice.

Pretty nice, aside from my lack of photography skillz.

Bone stag on top...compared to Amber Bone on the bottom...

I had a peanut in bonestag once. I though that the jigging to make it look like stag made it have sharper edges on the bone than other types of jigging. It looked OK but I didn't like the way it felt so I sold it.

I was wondering about that - I've seen some on the bay showing a gadzillion pics of one side and none of the other. Probably a good idea, as in stag, to see both sides before buying.

The pics posted here so far ALL look great, so with the above caveat in mind, I think I'll have to try to find one!

I have a Bone Stag Case Peanut that I used for years, and it has attained a buttery yellow color. The burn marks are kind've faded and blurred, and the knife has a nice, well used look to it. Like pocket patina on the bone. It looks really neat.

I don't especially care for it. To me it looks like bone jigged to imitate stag (and it fails). As with delrin that's jigged to imitate bone - don't care for it. However sawcut delrin is okay and super functional. Now, where my argument may break down is where our local artists are jigging micarta - now that I dig!

I've got a bonestag Trapper, a Cheetah, and a Large Texas Toothpick. They're all great-looking knives.

The Chinese have gotten the bone stag down to an art...I like the Case scales if they are burned dark but the bone stag on the Colts is really nice, even bringing some popcorn into play.

Very true. If you can see both sides it would really help. I found a 6375 on the bay some time ago and asked the seller for a picture of the other side, but he never did get back to me. Its funny, it wasn't that long ago that they didn't get much attention on auction, but that seems to have changed a little.

The scales on the Colt knife do have a nice look to them. It almost looks like Rams horn

The colour varies, but that's true of CASE Amber Bone,Chestnut Bone and Queen Cutlery's Amber Carved Stagbone. I think it was one of CASE's better efforts, it's nice and grippy and it does yellow mellow with age. I have a Peanut SS,Saddlehorn SS and Medium Stockman cv, the latter looks particularly good with these scales.

WORD OF WARNING I soaked the Saddlehorn in Mineral oil overnight and it turned it a hideous darkish grey colour, this and other things have put me right off the mineral oil treatment.Bonestag 6.5 does not seem to like it, it's not alone in this either...
