Case 6.5 Bone Stag - ???

Willgoy, i think the problem might be "soaking overnight", esp if an old knife with grime between the liners. oil dissolves some of the grime and then carries it into the handle material. i have stopped doing this and now just dip my finger into mineral oil and then rub it into the scales (bone/stag/or wood).

I have only one bonestag knife and while it does look nice it is a very bad imitation of real stag.

Roland, thanks, I believe you are right about that. Brass from the liners&other gunk in there might well have reacted with the oil. I wipe over and buff off with Lemon oil now, which Kerry sent me as we can't get it in Europe.

As ever, looks like I'm in the minority but I like the Bonestag 6.5 and regret its disappearance. The previous pic of a Barlow shows off the ageing process very nicely.

What is this? Is it bone that's supposed to look like stag? I've seen some pics on the bay and can't decide if I like it or not. I don't remember seeing any pics posted here on BF, or any discussion, so I'm guessing it's not too popular. Any info, or your impressions would be appreciated! Thanks!
The first number on a Case knife is the handle material. 6 is jigged real bone, jigged synthetic bone, or jigged laminate. On BoneStag, they use the number 6.5 so it is bone that is jigged and burnt under a real fire and not antler and Case does charge a bit extra for these scales although they are less expensive than antler and unlike jigged bone, BoneStag is always the same color.

Stag should look like this..., which is real stag. Case makes their scales/covers too glossy which is unnatural. Just my two cents.

Not a fan of the 6.5 bonestag. Found out the hard way and first tried the material on a Case/Bose lockback hunter. It looked OK in the pictures but left something to be desired in my eyes. Some RIT dye and a warm bath greatly improved the situationIMG_0154.JPGIMG_0155.JPG

I have two Case bonestag knives, a teardrop which is nicely done and a newer zulu which is just so-so. If they were real stag they would probably be $100 more expensive.

Fine pix as usual Alan

You've made an important point, Bonestag 6.5 is very variable stuff compared with say Queen Cutlery's WCSB or ACSB versions of Stagbone. The CASE offering certainly differed greatly from run to run and I'd agree with you about the Teardrop you have, it's nice stuff, the Zulu not so much.:)

Regards, Will

Thanks Will. The zulu is a well made knife and a good pattern, I have no idea about the covers. It was one of those choices where the knife overcame the look.
I don't much care for the bonestag, but a wharncliffe & pen Teardrop in CV with federal shield ticked all the boxes, so I went for it. View attachment 929980
That teardrop went from cool to ourstanding with the shield.

Sorry about the double post :( Don't actually know how to delete the first image:confused: Maybe Gary or Frank will purge it for me?

CASE Medium Stockman cv in what I think is really good grooved Bonestag 6.5.
