Case Backpocket

Well here it is guys. The one you guys badgered me into getting. The covers are Chestnut Stag Bone and it is Tru-Sharp. I passed on the one some of you have with 154 Stainless because I like the end caps on it. As some of you said, it does have a bit of rock at half stop but I don't think I'd have noticed it if I hadn't looked for it based on other's observations.

Peregrin (Gary)
said he didn't know how he would carry it but he'd give it a try. I mated it up with a slanted belt sheath from the company that markets the Mud Bug. Looks like it will work out ok.

So once again, thanks to everyone for badgering me into getting this knife.

Looks like a nice one, Ed! I like the sheath too. This place can be hazardous to your wallet.

Woah that bone is very nice love the jigging and the sheath is sweet think I need one now :)

That's a nice looking knife, Ed. I've usually steered away from Case's deep canyon bone because they have to run the slabs pretty fat to get those canyons in it. However, given the relative thinness to height of the Back Pocket handle, I think the extra thickness and superior texture for gripping will work great with that knife. Good choice. I'm also with you on preferring the end-cap bolster.

That Burnt Amber Bone is just begging for a bath in some red RIT dye!

I lightly dyed my 154CM with RIT dark brown dye, a few weeks after buying it.

I didn't really like how it originally was made. The bone was more the color of oatmeal than anything else. After a good experience with potassium permanganate on stag, I'm thinking about trying it on this knife, in order to darken it up even further.

That G-10 looks very nice. I've got my eye on one with ebony.

The G-10 does look very nice, but I'm not crazy about the grip. Case highly buffed the G-10, making it feel almost slippery in the hand. The Backpocket is so thin that it needs a grippy cover to keep it from sliding in your hand, so the buffed G-10 isn't the best match-up for it. I'd guess that ebony would perform far better.

My eyes about popped out of my head when I saw that one. Great color and the jigging is just first rate. Excellent score!

By the way, I'm with you on the end caps.

I’ve never dyed a knife - would you mind describing the process?

I didn't do anything extraordinarily intricate. I heated up the liquid RIT dye in a glass in the microwave, until it started boiling. Then I lowered the knife into the dye for 20 minutes. Afterward, I rinsed the knife with Dawn dish washing liquid and water, and flushed it with WD-40.

*How would you keep it off the metal? Or, is oxidation not a problem if the p.p. is removed quickly?
*Also, do you "strip/clean" the factory covers before dying?

I've done the hot RIT dye process several times. It's fine with any of Case's stainless steel knives. *It will cause pitting in carbon steel blades*, even brand new shiny ones that had no evidence of pitting before. Stainless steel and and nickel silver bolsters are immune, though brass liners tend to darken up a bit. A little metal polish and a soft cloth gets everything back to looking new, though.

Edit: Oh, sorry, misread that - you were talking about potassium permanganate and metal. I have no idea about that. Never mind.

It is a nice knife and I am liking this pattern more each day.
There is a little side to side play and the dye job isn’t so nice but it came super sharp and the bevels are nice.

I’ll most likely put it on the stones next weekend and see how it touches up.
It has been a long time since I sharpened and used 154cm so I am interested to see how it holds up.

Got mine! If I can figure out I will post a pic. It looks about like the one right above, but the jigging stops about 1/2 inch from the bolsters. Also there's a place that looks like someone grabbed it wet and rubbed most of the dye off - I like that color so may try buffing off some more of the dark brown.

Front bolster has just a bit of gap from the bone. Both bolsters are a little higher than the bone on the top side.

Otherwise excellent F&F, walks and talks. Blade centered perfectly. Sharp.
Moderate pull, can be pinched open pretty easily.

I really like this, seems like a $70 Bose/Case collab. to me. And I have 2 Case desk knives with the 154CM, excellent steel IMO that cuts anything.

I had to dig up this oldish thread because I just picked up one of the 154CM versions.

Mine came with a bit of a burr on the edge, and a little but of visible glue (or something) in the fob ferrule. The corner of one bolster is a little proud of the bone but the other 3 corners and the pins are all nicely flushed and smooth. It was a little gritty at first but is smoothing out nicely. I can pinch it open at the nail nick, which is nice. There's a bit of wobble at the half stop but, until I started reading this forum I didn't realize checking for that was even a thing (I mean, it's the half stop, it's not like you use it in that position...). The pull is pretty easy, I'd give it a 6. I'd prefer it to have a bit more spring tension fully opened but I'm in no way disappointed. The blade is nicely centered, and it came with a fob. I'm not sure I'm going to keep the fob on or not, I've never had a pocket knife with one before.

It's definitely big, bigger than I had expected; but carries well. I used to carry a Buck 422 against my wallet in my back pocket until I found clip knives. A few years back I started carrying traditional knives more often again and went back to back pocket carry for anything big enough (full sized trappers or stockmans).

I'm pretty happy with it, and I'll be carrying it around for a bit. I've never owned anything in 154CM before (being mostly an easy to sharpen, simple steel kind of person). It's just a bit thinner than I expected. Someone compared it to a buck 110 (blade wise at least) so I had to take a look for myself. The blade is about as thick at the spine (just eyeballing it), but where the Buck is hollow ground the Backpocket is (I think) full flat ground and more tapered; giving it a little less metal overall than the 110. It's also a 1/4 inch shorter. There's no comparison for the frame, the Backpocket makes the 110 look like a real chunky monkey.
