Case Disappointment!

I found my $10 rough riders blew my case knives fit and finish away...pretty sad really! i like case knives but i dont buy em new anymore, I just keep an eye out for old ones when they come up.

Don't even get me started. It breaks my heart, because I like Case knives. But at this point, I won't buy one sight unseen.

Unfortunately I feel the same way.Their QC is spotty at best.Of the last 10 Cases I bought,4 of them went back,& 2 came back exactly the same as when I sent them out.
Unless I can hand pick it,I won't be buying Case online anymore. It's a damn shame.

All this talk of Case's QC going downhill is making me a bit concerned...I just bought a Case small texas jack for my father as a christmas gift...I hope it doesn't display any of the issues people have raised in this thread.

What exactly was wrong with it?

If it was a black G-10 then it will have "as finished" blades with the grind marks on them. It was meant to be that way. Some even prefer it.

Bucks are known to be easy to open. That is one of the attractions for some. For others it is a turn off and seen as a negative compared to stouter springs. Again that is preference

I have a Case Humpback Whittler in black G-10 that is one of my favorite slipjoints. Three spring whittler, so it has nice heft/feel to it. The blades are machine satin finished. The black G-10 knives are part of a series of knives from the American Worker series.

WOW! I've had several Case knives in the past 5 years, and the QC has been excellent, and these were not hand picked. Case knives have really improved from the 90's!:)

If you're not happy with the knife, return it. Case has excellent customer service and has never left me unsatisfied.

The finish on the blades is expected. These are advertised having "as ground" blades so there isn't any polishing. There aren't meant to be pretty.

case has pretty good customer service and you'll likely never be happy if you keep it... That being said i havent had a flaw that i deemed worthy of sending back in any of the case knives i have, sucks that this happened to ya!
Like Morrow mentioned the as ground lack the high polish look of their other offerings, both my mini stockman and my mini blackhorn came that way, i kinda like it but to each his own.
Hopefully you can get it remedied

I bought a couple of the stainless Damascus ones to give my FIL and I've been spacing them out one a year. I saved the worst for last so I still have the last one to give him. I'll try to remember to take a picture of it before I wrap it.

I'm not really a slip joint kind of guy but I knew I didn't like Case from the very first one I was given by my Grandfather back in the 70's. I had several Case knives that I was given as a teen but the knife I actually used was a Schrade that I bought for myself. Everyone else in my family thinks they are the greatest things since sliced bread...but I think they are all still living in 1957 in their heads.

First time I ever heard someone dissatisfied with Case.

I'm not good at reading sarcasm on the internet but I'm guessing this is. Two out of my three Case knives were unacceptable at any price so yeah, I'm leery of buying any more sight unseen.
To make matters worse, the one I did send back to Case was returned to me with the blade play and liner rubbing fixed but they marred the bolster up in the process. :thumbdn:

Friggin' floods. They wiped out my Case company store, where I could go and hand-pick knives. Now, it looks like they won't be re-opening.

I had an issue with a stockman once. Sent it in and it was repaired for free. Every knife might not be perfect, but Case works hard to satisfy its customer base.

I bought a Case Trapper they produced in 2008 that's been great. Excellent fit and finish; it came with some kind of black grinding compound crusted in the joints though, and has developed some play. However, I wasn't really disappointed with the quality for the money I paid.

You do realize that when you send in your knife, that you will get an identical one back, minus the G-10 chips. That machine satin finish is standard on that knife. The springs are stiff for that particular knife. If you are expecting anything else, you are still going to be disappointed.

Don't even get me started. It breaks my heart, because I like Case knives. But at this point, I won't buy one sight unseen.

The last three Case knives I purchased were bought sight unseen off that big online auction site. All three were made in the last 5 years. I was very happy with all three knives. YMMV.

I ordered a Case Mini Traper. When I read this, I get a little bit worried about, what would happen to my hard earned money. But the most oppinions of Case are pretty good. So I´m looking forward getting the knive ´til Christmas...

Kind regards...

I had a Boker USA Tree Brand slippie many years ago - my Dad loved them - then a Buck 301, which I still have, many years later. Many, many, knives later, I elected to try slippies again - and bought some Boker German-made Tree Brand classics - like my Dad actually had. Skip ahead to this autumn - I decided to finally try a Case - and decided on a Seahorse Whittler. My wife ordered a pair from a local store - that model was shelved in July. She bought both - and gave them to me when she saw my Seahorse Whittler arrive - as an early Christmas gift. At 62, I went from never having even held a Case knife to owning three of the same model (different scales). The QC is VG+ on all three, the blade & bolster polish is high, and the action was tight and rough on all of them. I am not fond of SS slippies - except for Buck - these were not hair poppers.

I flooded them with aerosol RemOil, wrapped in paper towels, and shook them to release the then nasty solvent - and repeated. A drop of gun oil at the pivot - and rub area - Breakfree w/CLP - and working the action a bit helped immensely. I left one with it's main blade half out - at max spring deflection - and it seemed to help. The cleaning/lube helped the auxillary blades, too. The Bokers and Bucks are easier to open - but the Case's are far better than they were - and are certainly acceptable now. I am about to go back to my original thoughts on Case knives... they are collected, not used. BTW, the Seahorse Whittler is a great knife... it is a handy size/blade for whittling.

I think I'll stick with my Boker Tree Brand Solingen made carbon steel classics when I want a 'classic' slippie - they are better quality, sharper, and... cheaper! I really think Case knives are now for collectors. I'll keep my trio... but doubt there will be more. Not every brand is for every one, that's for sure.

I love Case knives and have a dozen or so of various patterns. That being
said, I find it annoying when what comes out of the box doesn't look
much like what is featured in the ad; latest example being a hunter
green bone Trapper Lock with silver script. The photo in the Shepherd
Hills catalog shows a dark green bone handle of almost uniform shading that
highlights the silver script perfectly. What came out of the box was
virtually black bone with a greenish tinge at the ends. I should mention
that the action was surprisingly smooth for a Case and that the sharpness
left nothing to be desired.

I like the knife enough to keep it but have had this problem in the past,
especially with stag. One side is beautiful with the other coarse and
dull. Customer service tells me such variations are common in natural
materials and they won't do anything about it.

Ive seen lots of pics of case knives and found the fit and finish to look rather poor. Could be the picture quality, but i tend to find pictures do the opposite and hide blemishes. I think case holds some special nostalgia with many knife owners and that attitude helps them to see the good quality parts. Personally, i step away from case.

If you got a little extra money take a look at GEK, i have had very good luck with their fit and finish

I'll always be grateful for Case drawing me into the world of traditional slip joints. Have quite a few trappers. My wish is that for using knives they offer an upgrade of the steel.

I think the knives offered by Queen in D2 leave Case in the dust in terms of performance.
