Case Disappointment!

I think the knives offered by Queen in D2 leave Case in the dust in terms of performance.

Queen have had their share of QC issues too...and none i've got ever came sharp lol but a few mins on the diamonds and strop get em good, D2 sure has awesome edge retention.

I have owned and used Case knives for over 25 years and have never had an issue with them. I have started to collect certin patterns and definatly find that I perfer to hand pick them for my personal likes. The description of stag and colour variances are the main thing for me. I will not buy a stag handled knife with out holding it in my hand. I have also noticed the way some of the shelds can be smeared into the jigging by the hafting process. Fortunatly I am with in driving distance to two major dealers and a multitude of smaller ones and can pick'm to sute me!;)

I'm not a Case collecter, but I own several and have had no quality issues with them. It's important to remember that every knife company that produces large amounts of knives is going to have a lemon get out from time to time. Their customer service is what really matters. I wouldn't let this knife ruin your opinion of Case, but if their customer service isn't up to par, then your poor opinion of Case will be validated.

The problem is people dont want to buy a knife to just have to send it back in.

As I told you I ordered the Case Mini Trapper.

Well, how to say? It´s a great knife. The blade is really easy to resharpen. Keeps the edge long sharp. The handles are of Jigged Bone, I like the material. It´s my first knife with such handels, and wont be my last Case-Knife. I Already got it now for about one-and-a-half-week. I like it, and Case makes great knives.

So far from the rain-snowy border to Austria

Kind regards...

Did Case take care of the OP?

Case agreed there might be a problem and sent me a prepaid return package just before Christmas. Shortly after the holiday, I returned the knife to them. After the first of the year, I contacted them and inquired as to my replacement. I was told they had 13 bins of mail to process. As soon as they get to my package they will process my replacement. A week after that I received a post card in the mail stating Case will need 6 to 8 weeks to repair my knife. I was pissed, as I'd been promised a replacement. I contacted them again questioning what the postcard said, and was told they send this postcard out to everyone that returns a knife. Anyway, they were in the process of examining my new knife and getting it ready to ship. :jerkit: Needless to say I'm still waiting.

Playing catch up here. I'm not a Case collector, but I do have one Case knife that was made in 2000 that I absolutely love. Perfect fit and finish. Is there a general consensus as to a time frame (from a specific year to year) when Case's quality became spotty?

from what ive been told it's gotten a bit better since the 80's/90's, depends on who you ask, ive had great luck with the ones i have... I will tell you if at all possible inspect any knife in person, not always possible but can head off grief... All my case have been fine, some variances but nothing that warrants a return to bradford pa... not to diminish the OP or anybody else thats had problems
Also the older 70's and earlier are generally highly regarded...
what pattern ya have?
cheers

Here are the pair my wife bought me - nicer than the one I found, of course:

I am a real danger to a double edge with stones - it took a Spydie Sharpmaker to help me sharpen my drawer of butter knives. The three Seahorse Whittlers I have aren't razors - but they carve basswood and even walnut quite well - I may use mine for a bit and enjoy my 'collection' before heading to the Sharpmaker. I believe I'll hold at a collection of three Seahorse Whittlers. I hope the op gets a good replacement.

Not long ago I found a 1971 Case 2 blade stockman with brown jigged
bone scales in an antique shop in Hayward. It didn't have a box but
it was obvious it had been carried very little or not at all; I got it out
of the store for 50 bucks. Absolutely mint.

When I got it home I compared it to my latest new Case addition,
a Trapperlock in Silver Script hunter green bone. The old knife is
what anyone would expect from a '70s Case--pretty damn good.
The new knife doesn't give anything up to the old guy--sharp as hell,
beautiful bone and script, and the smoothest deployment I've ever
had on a Case product. Net to the deal? I know Case has spotty
quality from time to time but I think the current product is not far
from the glory days of the 60's and 70's.

I just picked up a large Case Brothers Gunstock with chestnut bone this afternoon. As my others, it came with excellent walk/talk, fit/finish, centered blades, and newsprint slicing edges out of the box. Just an excellent knife!:)

I guess I spoke to soon yesterday, as my replacement arrived today. There's no chipping in the G10, and the bolsters are nice and smooth as I'd expect them to be. The blades weren't clean, and still had compound on them. At least Case corrected my issue. Thanks Case!

In the future, I'll be sure to hand pick each Case I decide to buy. No more internet orders for me, when it comes to Case. Lesson learned.

Glad you got it back. How is the spring strength as you mentioned it was pretty tight before? Are the blades polished, or still satin finished? Hey, that was pretty quick, especially after the postcard they sent you!:D

The spring strength while strong is not a nail breaker. There's no chips in the G10, all but one of the bolsters are pristine, the other while not great is not a deal breaker, and the blades are still satin ruff finished.

I've had mixed results from Case over the last year but not enough of an issue to send them back in. I did recently receive a Buck 301 that had so much blade rub that they would not even close without pushing down on the spine of the blades. This one is going back to Buck next week to see what can be done. Great sturdy design though so I'm looking forward to a usable knife to come back.

Good for CASE for fixing your knife, and good for you for the follow up. I wonder sometimes if given the opportunity to make things right that manufacturers actually do, and we hear nothing about it.

Thanks.

Robert

i also have had some problems with case.mainly a few very unevenly ground blade edges.and some poor fitting bone handles.but i still like some case models:thumbup:
