CASE Humpback

On swedge expertise, I'll have to defer to Kerry. His comments got me thinking and he is right. The swedges on the main blade would be hard on your hand. There is obviously more to knife making than just making it look good.

Fortunately, the master blade swedges tend to fall in the gap between the first and second fingers when using the small blades, so they haven't been a problem so far. Likewise for the sharp-ish shoulder on the spey blade when using the master. Other than that, the small blades lie flush with the handle, so they're out of the way. Actually, my biggest ergonomic concern is with the sharp edges on the thin, swedged spine of the master that lie right under the first joint of your index finger when using the short blades. :(

As for the mismatched swedges on the small blades, having absorbed Kerry's comment, they are not so perfect after all. Good thing is that it would take practically nothing to line them up or at least get them closer. Maybe the word can be passed on to Case? Thanks Kerry, for the education.

I can find no reason for the mismatched swedge plunges on the small blades; it seems that it would have been just as easy to keep them symmetrical. Perhaps they felt that obvious asymmetry would be more pleasing than a minor mismatch that might result due to accumulated grind tolerance errors in the assembled knives . Can't say it bothers me much aesthetically, though YMMV.

Mind if I ask how long the blades are?

The master is a shortish 2.40" - looks to me like they could easily have added at least another 1/4" - and the pen and spey blades are 2.05" and 2.12" respectively.

I'd been thinking about picking one up and Rick's photos put me over the edge. I have a G-10 one on order. Thanks to everyone for the photos and info!

Do any of you know if the stockman whittler is slimmer than the whittler? Two springs instead of threee? I'm really liking this, but am unsure of which way to go.

I hope to be getting the Stockman version very soon. (Harvest Bone Pocket Worn) Will post pix if I can nag a teenage 'starlet' I know into using her camera for non glam shots!

This Humpback also comes in Stag and a very nice looking bone termed burnt oat I think. Anybody have such a thing? Any really old pix of Humpbacks at all?
Regards, W

There is one thing I just have to ask here. Am I the only one who finds the choice of a spey blade on a whittler knife a bit odd? Spear, pen and spey...where's the point for fine detail work?

I know where it is on mine. It's on the small clip blade that used to be a spey. ;)

I thought it was an unusual choice, but I didn't actually buy the knife for whittling. I just like the design. I have other knives I use for whittling.

Rick you've just sold it too me, just put one on order.... nearly bought a Canoe but this will suit my needs better. Cheers

I agree, it's a bit weird. I sure would like to see that modification though ;)

I just ordered one of those black micarta humpback whittlers for myself so I can "fix it" :D

That's easy enough to accomplish.

I received mine. Strong springs. Really, right up there with GEC.

Yeah - I should probably revise my "almost a nail-breaker" comment, as the pen blade finally made mincemeat of the ol' thumbnail, and the spey isn't much more nail-friendly.

I picked this one up yesterday. I think most folks would have sent this knife back because the pen blade wasn't even sharpened. Other than that, the knife works well and has strong springs and blades(that were sharpened) were very sharp. I'm not impressed with the ground finish that they put on it. It would be improved greatly by giving the blades a little fine Scotchbrite wheel treatment.

Couldn't leave it alone :D...."after pix" showing blades touched up a bit.

I thought it was a good knife but you have made it an excellent one. Can we all send you ours for the extra bit of TLC?

LOL...yer funny! NO!:D I did it for the fun of it. Sweating over someone else's knife would make me very nervous, which is not fun. :p

Great mods, how do I do "a little fine Scotchbrite wheel treatment" or should i say where can I get one/ make one ( scotchbrite wheel that is?) Cheers

Please take this line of inquiry to the "Maintenance/Embellishment" forum where this topic is covered in depth. Thanks.

I bought one of the Stag Humpback Stockmen the other day off of ebay. I must say that these are on par quality wise with the sway back jacks. The stag looks much nicer than I see on other case knives. The 3 blades are perfectly positioned (centered), with none touching each other or the liners. The springs are gapless with that solid block of steel look about them. The springs are tight and snappy. The blades are hair shaving sharp. The stag ones are highly polished, unlike the G-10 whittlers.

I can't really find anything to complain about. OK, the shield is a little proud on one "corner". Send it back!

These newer patterns seem to get the TLC that the older regular production doesn't get.

Eric.
